Call for Artists, Making Money at Juried Art Fairs, Craft Shows and Festivals
I just did two great shows in the midwest that I had not heard of before this year. One was Edward's Place Fine Art Fair in Springfield, IL, September 15th and 16th and the other was Edwardsville Art Fair, in Edwardsville, IL September 21-23rd in Edwardsville, IL outside of St. Louis.
Edward's Place Fine Art Fair has been going on for 30 years and I think I just never looked for shows that weekend before because of previous commitments. But it turns out this show fits a lot of the…Continue
On Friday I got an email from St. Stephen's Church that puts on the St. Stephen's Art Show in Miami calling for help in boarding up the church to get ready for Hurricane Irma. For some reason this really hit me since I obviously couldn't do anything from Minnesota but I really wished I could help all the artists that are going to be or have already been effected by the terrible hurricanes this year. I had planned to donate to the artist relief funds but when I thought about how I was going…Continue
The College Hill Arts Festival is a Friday, Saturday show in Cedar Falls IA the third weekend in June. I have been told about this show for years and it finally fit into my schedule AND I finally got accepted (wait listed last year) I arrived Thursday night with a welcoming hail storm but once the skies cleared set up was easy. It looked like most artists had set up before the storm (4:00 start for set up). I waited out the storm for two hours and then was able to get my tent and display…Continue
It's taken me a few weeks to get over my worst mistake ever. Here's the story:
I spent all week thinking maybe I should cancel out of the Fall Festival of the Arts in Redwing that weekend. The weather was looking cold, I had my parents coming into town on Sunday, I needed to spend time with my 16 year old and my husband was out of town. I have never in 23 years of doing shows canceled out of a show so I felt super guilty about the prospect. On Wednesday I actually went to website…Continue
The Loring Park Arts Festival had lived in the shadow of the Uptown Art Fair since it's inception 17 years ago. Minneapolis had three major art fairs on the same weekend including the Powderhorn Park Art Festival. This was A LOT of art for the public to take in all at once. Only a few diehards made it to more than one. Personally I started veering away from all three shows finding that the weekend was just oversaturated and spreading the buying "love" way too thin. But when the Loring…Continue
Just finished up my fifth year as a demo artist at the Smoky Hill River Festival in Salina, Kansas. Once again I have to say this is my favorite show of the year even in a heat wave like this year! As a demo artist we get treated like royalty and I only pay 10% commission for my booth (with a cap at $325). Everything at this small town festival is done right from my point of view and one of my favorite programs is their First Treasures program.
They ask artists to donate any…Continue
Every year for over 20 years I dutifully applied to the Laumeier Art Fair in St. Louis because it seemed like a better alternative than any other Mother's Day show within a days drive. After rejection after rejection my luck finally changed and I got in! (Maybe it was because applications numbers were down- possibly due to last year's bad weather which I heard all about from everyone)
So after you try so long to get into a show it's hard not to have your hopes up. The weather was…Continue
And it's good to be out of Minnesota's below zero wind chills to do a couple of shows in Florida! I knew I was taking a big risk doing the 30 hour trek (should have been less but I got lost in Tennessee for two hours) to do two totally unknown to me shows in Florida- St. Stephen's in Coconut Grove and Naples National (next weekend). It really helped to do some research on Art Fair Insiders but I was still coming here with fingers crossed.
Well it paid off big time- St. Stephens was…Continue
This will be my fourth and hopefully last time to give Strawberry Days in Glenwood Springs CO a chance to be a decent show. When I did this show back in 2002 I was disappointed in sales compared to booth fee but if I could have made close to what I did back then I would have been thrilled.
I know this show has a new promoter and it seemed she was doing her best and working very hard to be sure there wasn't any buy sell and that the artists/crafts people were showing what they…Continue
People always ask me what my favorite show to do is and up until now I never had a really difinitive answer. After doing the Smoky Hill River Days Festival for the last four years I would have to say this one is truely the winner.
I have been in the demo area which means I get to do five one hour demos through out the three day festival. This I truely love to do- the interaction with the crowd is super fun and even tend to get buyers for the pieces I am making before they are even…Continue
