Funky Ferndale

Had the experience of doing Funky Ferndale this past weekend in Ferndale, MI. Found it quite interesting overall. Felt a bit like a northern version of Key west. Folks were very friendly and receptive to our work.

Winter Park Autumn Art Festival

Well, just finished up our first fall show in Florida. For us this event was a first time as participants. It is only about 120 miles one way so the drive is relatively easy for us. We had called in advance about parking for our RV and were told they had availability on a first come first served basis. So we headed out hoping to arrive about 2 hours prior to the official setup time thinking we would get all nice and parked with our rig. We arrived to find the artist lot completely full as…

Alabama Shows

Hi All,

We are looking for any info/experiences at the following 2 shows in Alabama. Orange Beach Festival of Art & 61st Annual Arts & Cratfs Festival in Fairhope. Both are March shows on back to back weekends. We are thinking of giving them a try. Anything you can share would be of help in our efforts to decide on them.

Gold Coast Art Festival

We are 4 weeks into an 8 week road trip and eagerly anticipated our first Amdur Productions show. Our flight for setup was 6:30pm. We arrived at 6:40 from the campground out in the "burbs". I sent my wife in for check in and waited across the street from the park. The scene was pretty chaotic. Vans, trailers and vehicles all over, some double parked, with city traffic streaming on by everyone. My wife came back with our load in pass and we proceeded to the far side near our booth location for… Continue

Some Road Warrior Info

Most of you in the Midwest probably know this already. If you drive a motor home or tow a travel trailer to the shows and travel the Ohio Turnpike, you can stay at the rest stops for $20 for a nite. This is a dedicated rv area with electric hook up, they also have a dump station and water. The limit is 1 night. Just thought I would pass this along. Anyone else who has such info should share it with the rest of us too.

Closing our old merchant account

Like many, we have gone over to using Square for our credit card processing. Our merchant contract expired on May 20th so we took all the steps in advance to close it out without penalty. It amazed me that during several calls and emails not one person with the merchant service asked what we were using now instead or made any attempt to retain us. We "knock wood" never had any issues or a single charge back with them so it was not like they might be glad to see us go. I was wondering if these… Continue

A little travel tip

Just like to pass on a little idea I heard this past weekend at Mayfaire By the Lake Art Festival. Our neighbor was Steve Vaughn? We were talking about upcoming shows and got on the subject of the Alexandria, VA show with H.A.E. Steve mentioned that he uses the Amtrak auto train to travel from Florida to Lorton, VA to do the show. He has a full size van and it goes on the train with him so he does not have to drive much as Lorton is close to the show site. I did some price checking and for 2… Continue

QR Codes

I saw some mentions of QR codes in another posting. We have the QR codes for our website, Facebook & Twitter on the back of our business cards. I enlarged the images from the card and laminated it to use as a small sign on the booth wall at shows. Even put some Velcro on the back so I can just slap it up on the pro panel wall. You would be surprised at how many people scan it with their phones. I been thinking of making more use of QR codes by maybe placing one on each piece so patrons… Continue

The all important booth shot.

We have had the experience of getting a new booth shot this past year. The best of plans were set, a photographer lined up etc. We arrived at the shoot and set it all up on a nice overcast day, but no the sun came out full right when we were ready to take the photos, as we were paying by the hour we went ahead with the shoot. The photographer used a wide angle lense up close to the booth and when we got the pics it looked like the booth was slightly a frame shaped. Lesson learned on that and it… Continue

Florida shows

As Florida residents my wife and I do shows here from Oct to May with the exception of the One of A Kind in Chicago. The fall season is always a mixed bag. This year Jan shows were up for us over the previous 2 years, this trend continued into Feb. We had our best Mt Dora ever followed by a good show in Estero. Then it seemed the bottom kind of dropped out here. We had a series of poor shows in Sarasota, Venice, Bonita Springs and Naples. Hopefully upcoming events in Delray Beach, Melbourne and… Continue

A most unusual setup delay

Well, there I was, ready to setup at the Naples Invitational Art Festival this morning. I had rolled into town in the wee hours the night before and secured a parking place in the artist parking area. Slept a bit and headed over to the setup around 9:15AM. The show is in Flieshman Park and my booth location can be accessed from a service road into park. I pulled in and drove towards the other end. Around the bend on the pavement was a group of ladies sitting on mats in the roadway. They were… Continue

Our first show using Square for credit card processing

Well, our first weekend using the Square was somewhat anti climatic. Sales were very slow so we only did 4 transactions with it. It was easy to use and worked just fine on our IPad. Some of our neighbors had used it for some time and all liked it over other methods. The one thing that occurred was 3 out our 4 transactions declined the email or text recipes option so we had to hand write them a receipt. This is an issue I have brought up after speaking with another user who had only 1 patron… Continue

Weekend in Venice

While lots of artists were enjoying the windy weather at Gasparilla, we did the Venice Art Fest with H.A.E. They did their usual good job of organizing, advertising and being on site. Setup there is a breeze (no pun intended) as long as you don't mind doing it at 5am. Quality of the work was very good and the crowds came out on Sat. Sun morning dawned with grey skies and wind. We were fortunate to have buildings across from us which shielded some of the winds. Anyway folks did come out…

Merchant account processing

Hi All,

We currently use a Nurit 8000 wireless terminal and are coming to the end of our agreement. One of the providers we have checked out is 1st National. On a side by side comparison with a recent settlement statement it looks like we could have saved $30 + for the same amount of business by going with them. That is just one month's worth. We were wondering if anyone uses 1st National and would like some feedback about service, fees et. Also, they want us to go to a…

Very strange trip it was this past weekend.

We were at the Downtown Sarasota Art Festival this past weekend. Crowds were out both days. For reasons we have yet to figure out, we had a much higher than normal number of sales that we simply could not close on. An example: Patron enters our booth, eyes one of our $39 candle swirls, picks it up and comments " I really love this piece, I'm going to catch up with my friend and we will come back to get it." 5 minutes later they stroll in and the friend gushes over it too. I had already spoken… Continue

Getting more out of ZAPP

I have been thinking of some features that Zap might incorporate into the show listings. Some of these might not prove popular with every event or promoter, however they do merit some thought. I' m looking for opinions on these thoughts.

Along with all the usual event app info etc, I would find it useful in making choices on entries if the following info was available:

Total openings at show, total number of re invites, remaining openings, now for the fun part, openings…

Image submission for Zapp

Well, I'm sure to open a can of worms here. Many of us have endured the advent of electronic image submission with the resulting frustration, anger and outright bewilderment that comes at no extra charge with the rejection email or letter. My wife and I have run the gamut of different photographers, background colors, piece selection and booth shots. The results have not varied much during this journey, lots of no's and precious few congrats you are accepted! I have recently come upon some new… Continue

One of A Kind Show - Chicago

Just did the OOAK Show in Chicago, this is a very well run event. For those who are not familiar with it I will run through the basics. Included in your booth fee is a 10 x 10 approx space with walls, carpet, lights (6) electricity and trash can. The walls come in white and you can request and pay for colors. The way I have found is to bring rolls of colored paper and staple or tack it up yourself to save the painting fees. Any way, you show up at the loading dock and the union labor carts…
