Interesting Words from Ann Arbor

I had a great time this year at Ann Arbor.  Amid the lovely, heartfelt compliments there were a few comments I "collected" and thought you all might get a chuckle out of them...

Two separate buyers assured me I shouldn't worry because my work would be "going to a good home."

A lady with a very obvious Chinese accent and a large camera pointed at my ceramic art:

"Is all of this made in the US?"

Another  lady scrutinizing the sculpted ceramic…

Question about details

I have a question regarding jury photos.  What do you all think about picture-in-picture details of a smaller part of the work in the photo?  Is it distracting, or does it give the jurors an opportunity to see the details of a large piece?  I make ceramic art with sculpted elements, so the whole piece is interesting, but there are details that would be missed by an overall photo.  Good or bad?  Thanks in advance for your input.

Pro Gallery Covers

I am seriously considering investing in some mesh wall panels for my Trimline, and with the mesh panels I'm thinking of getting some Pro Gallery covers from Flourish.  Does anyone have experience with these, and possibly some photos?  The Flourish people don't have many photos to share, and I want to now more before I make the investment.  Thanks!

Insurance coverage?

I've checked through the blogs, and I've found a couple of companies mentioned that I plan to contact, but I welcome any other suggestions on this topic.  I'm interested in comparing a yearly insurance policy for art fairs against buying insurance for a single event.

Originally I contacted the agent who has our homeowner's policy and discovered that what State Farm offered was not only too expensive to be practical, but it also had a whopping deductible that pretty much made the…

Behind your tent?

I've been in several shows where we had some extra room around the 10'x10' area, and some people have been very clever about erecting awnings or "back room" areas.  This is especially handy for rainy or extremely hot days!  Unfortunately I haven't really paid attention to how they made these areas, and I'd love some suggestions.  I have a Flourish Trimline tent, and know I could just buy the 5' awning, but I'm not sure I really need that or want it.  One lady made sort of a lean-to…

A sloppy, wet day at Penrod 2010

After hearing great reports about last year's Penrod show, I was thrilled to be admitted this year- the first time I applied to it. But wouldn't you just know that Indiana has been parched dry as a bone for 7 straight weeks, and the heavens opened the floodgates Saturday morning? The crowds simply never arrived, even when the sun came out in the afternoon. Sunday and Monday have been beautiful again.

All in all, I heard a tremendous amount of grumbling about sales being off, and the… Continue

Hi everyone...

I just got a call from a friend who is a collector of antique bone china and is a supplier to Replacements Ltd. In the past when she has found broken or cracked pieces, she has given them to artists who break them up and use them for things like mosaics or wind chimes. Right now she has several pieces she's collected, but the artist she most recently gave them to has moved and… Continue
