Call for Artists, Making Money at Juried Art Fairs, Craft Shows and Festivals
Sorry, first of all for being ten days post event to share a new Art Fair. My new hip has been acting up.
That aside, this was the first Amdur event in my home town of Milwaukee, WI. I was excited. The weather proved to be stunning, with cool breezes off Lake michigan three blocks away and the sun had taken on an autumn brilliance.
The setting was the Historic Third Ward. Originally a manufacturing district due to its proximity to the waterways, the buildings were all…Continue
Recently, I read a blog on AFI about the perils of:
1) Donating your works for charity.
2) Giving a piece of your work for raffle at the Art Fair you are attending.
3) Well, let's not enumerate on… the post was against GIVING AWAY your ART for any reason because it lowers its value.
Why? The jist of the post was that it’s BAD for BUSINESS!
Yes, I have the concept correct, unfortunately. Artists need to be savvy business women/men with cost sheets of…Continue
I know, I know....nine more days!
But YOU know ME!!!! LOL
In bold and upper case, I just have to wish every single Art Fair Insider a
I was thrilled to do Amdur Productions, "The Inside Show" this past weekend. Only forty artists were chosen, ten of whom were jewelers. The air was rareified, let me tell you. But that is not what this post is about.
On Monday, I received an email from a lady (who shall remain nameless) telling me that anyone from "The Real Thing" show OR the "Inside Show" were being asked to join a limited engagement Co-Op of some artists at an abandoned Borders store across…
Let's hope this show becomes another holiday tradition!
Here are some thoughts :
1) The Elegant and Central location of the Highland Park Country Club was a superb selection. The Club itself is beyond lovely and on high traffic roads. I feel the site and hostess details will be keys to drawing our friends back again and again. On Friday night, there were spotlights circling the inky darkness and trying to draw the Friday Shopper’s attention. On Saturday and Sunday…Continue
In eighteen days, my second son gets married to a wonderful girl. I'm all ready. I'll even post pictures of the event on AFI for fun. So, as Mother-of-the-Groom, I planned the rehersal dinner, helped the kids pay a few extra bills, and made all the wedding jewelry........no sweat!
I've needed a break. LOL
Yesterday I received a Zapp notification for Des Moines.
NO WAY....thought I......deadlines sneak up .......Oh, OH!
This is no hoax, exaggeration, fit of hysterics, or roll of doldrums.
"Dan and I are thinking of quitting the Art Fair Biz."
No, some might exclaim!
But is this the same woman who was so creatively and emotionaly transcendent after Amdur's Promenade of Arts?
"Yup", I answer.
(I can ask and answer my own questions. Pretty advanced for my age, hey?)
Well, what happened this past month, you wonder?
"It all hit."
Calling all artists:
1) Applications for the important shows begin to be due in Setember, 2011 through January, 2012. And then it can be over for the big shows.
2) I am asking all experienced artists in the major categories to state your expertise and then which shows you consider the top ten. THEN, which shows YOU are actually applying to show in 2012. Thanks for sharing!!
3) We know we need to get professional pictures taken NOW, our booth shot MUST…Continue
In a recent post, Larry Berman reminded us to not submit a photo to zapp or any other show for that matter where the DCSF number might include the DATE of the picture. WHY? Because if you are submitting a beloved photo from 2007 for a 2012 show, the jururs might toss you thinking this is your old work....and it is five years OLD!
So I thought about what I submit.
I enter names like "All That Jazz", "Spring Ice". "Victorian Vanity" or "Mesmerize…Continue
Swinging down through the Chicago Loop with the great Cher and Christina belting out about burlesque("show a little more, show a little less, let them know what's in store, welcome to burlesque!), we started out our journey to Gold Coast in high spirits.
When we reached the lake we could open the windows and feel the great breeze off Lake Michigan.
And that's what my tent has: a great view of the magnificent fountain in Grant Park and a cool breeze. Our booth is backed…Continue
Today is Independence Day. On AFI we celebrate our individualitiy every waking moment. I have been with vocal groups before but YOU ALL define the concept of a "think tank."
So I wondered about all I have read over the past months. Could we get it down to:
ONE THING WE EACH WOULD CHANGE ABOUT THE ART WORLD OR BEING ARTISTS?
(no repeats, except to add an inportant concept to the original)
How high could we go? Each person number your…Continue
Well, I'm packed and ready to head down toward the Windy City way and my first Promenade of Art in Arlington Heights, Illinois. I'm excited, I can tell you.
Altthough this past Tuesday, Mukwonago had such high winds, hail and lighting that it shattered the boys plexiglass basketball hoop(good thing it fell to the right. Dan's antique refurbished 1963 Fury was to the left! Whew.) And it split our largest tree right down the middle......that was the one my oldest tried to saw…Continue
The other day when I stopped to buy some E-6000, the woman in the checkout line ahead of me was buying an armful of jewelry magazines.
As we were crawling by inches forward, she turned to me, admired my necklace and asked, "Which magazine did you find that one in?"
I was surprised at the height, breathe and depth of my indignation. I have been thinking about this moment and I have an epiphany to share with you:
I have a patent pending on an item I make. There is a sign above the display with the PP number on it.
It never fails a few times a year that after trying one on, a customer will say that she just wanted to see "how you make yours because I make the exact thing."
I ask her where she's from, does she have a website, what shows is she in? Subtle, huh?
I quietly ask her if she saw the sign over the display. Sometimes, the question is, "What does that mean?"
I couldn't find a Forum category for this so I came back to the more familiar Blog Spot. (LB feel free to move me...just tell me where.)
On the Committee thus far are Annette Piper, Larry Berman, Phil Crone, Lynda Wallis, Collette Zilka, Geoff Coe, Lauren Lasa and myself. I am publishing names because my mailbox went to OVERFLOW and I received those lovely ADMIN messages. So it is possible that I have missed someone whom I apologize to, if you sent an email and it was lost.…Continue
After several positive posts in a previous blog and after discussing this issue with Connie, we have the go ahead to form a committee for a FAQ tab on this site.
Here are Connie's exact words: "I would be very pleased to have you and some others put together an FAQ about the site. It would be a good community building activity. Do you think you can line up some others to help you with this? I would support this and help get it published and available, blog…Continue
I watched Art Fair Insiders from afar for months.....Why?
It was just too confusing for me to throw my attention into the process.
And that continues to this date. LOL
I see Larry Berman telling people their blogs belong under business. How do you do that?
I just saw a post about "Leaderboards." ( I was gratified to see my name there!)
I just keep feeling that we could tempt those 229 more people to join very easily if…Continue
I am tunderstruck!
I went off the Wait List and was invited to participate in the Promenade of Arts in Arlington Heights, IL.
I feel like it's my first catwalk, first holy communion, first date, firsy baby and first wedding all rolled into one event! I mean.....
What to wear.....
Must I redo the booth....an oriental rug(wait I already have one!)
Wait. What I really want to know is what is the…Continue
