I was invited to the Toledo Zoo's Wild About Art show and another show in Chardon, Ohio on the same weekend.  I know what the Chardon show is all about, but wondered if anyone has had any experience…Continue

How to handle change in style and mediums in jury images

Started this discussion. Last reply by Sonja Jones Sep 20, 2018. 4 Replies

Up to now, I have painted mostly in watercolors and in a more "realistic" style.  But recently I have been experimenting with a more abstract style in acrylics, painting similar subject matter, but…Continue

Boston Mills Artfest 2018 from a newbie perspective

Started this discussion. Last reply by Christina L. Towell Jul 11, 2018. 5 Replies

While I was initially rejected from the Boston Mills show, I received a call off the waitlist the day of the show!  I wasn't really surprised by my initial rejection, as my booth shot for the…Continue

Hi All,  I have yet to qualify for a "real" art show - have only done arts and crafts type venues.  I just bought a tent last year, and now am trying to improve my booth shot.  I read all of Larry's…Continue

Sonja Jones replied to Sarah Schoenfeld's discussion Brutal feedback, please?
"Hi Sarah!  I am relatively new to this, too, and began like you doing church art and craft shows.  I agree with everything the others have stated here - you need to upgrade your display to look more crisp and professional.  Go to some…"

Sonja Jones replied to Ted Martin's discussion My second attempt for booth photo
"Hi Elaine,  I also have an EZ Up style tent, though not a Euromax.  I'm betting that what Ted has used to mount his artwork are the white mesh walls by Flourish.  I have them for my tent, and they are very well designed. …"

Sonja Jones replied to Ted Martin's discussion My second attempt for booth photo
"Hi Ted, I was just able to see the current photo, but I thought it looked pretty good overall.  I don't get a sense of crowding at all.  And I like the rustic theme you have with your framing and the wood display boxes.  The only…"

Fletcher Dean replied to Sonja Jones's discussion Has anyone had experience with the Toledo Zoo "Wild About Art" show?
"Stay away. The folks are pleasant enough but there are no sales. Nada. I take that back: I sold one $20 print. Some artists left after the first day. It was the same all over. If you think about it, you understand why. The people who are there are…"

Sonja Jones replied to Sonja Jones's discussion Has anyone had experience with the Toledo Zoo "Wild About Art" show?
"Thanks all!  I was already leaning towards the Chardon show, as it’s closer to my home, less expensive booth fee, and I know it gets a decent, dedicated turn out.  But I wanted to have a back up show, and I used to live in Toledo and…"

Lynn McAleer replied to Sonja Jones's discussion Has anyone had experience with the Toledo Zoo "Wild About Art" show?
"It was horrible.....no one was there to shop, they were there to be at the zoo. And the children!! OMG, very few parents controlled the children. Sticky, wet, dirty and uncontrolled children high on sugar!! Need I say more? Difficult to get in and…"

Judy Christian replied to Sonja Jones's discussion Has anyone had experience with the Toledo Zoo "Wild About Art" show?
"I have never heard of this show, is it new? I would be skeptical of a show if it is being held during the same hours that the zoo is open if they are planning to get your customers from the zoo attendance crowd. I used to do the Chardon show when I…"

First show ever
Gingerbread House Art and Craft Show was my first show of any kind. My first real art show, though, was Boston Mills.

What are the best things about art fairs
Validation of my artwork.
Best show ever and why
Boston Mills was my best show to date, but I am just getting started. But this show was the largest venue I've showed in to date, and I was able to make a profit despite lousy weather.
Worst show ever and why
The Chagrin Falls Avant-garde show was my worst. The booth fee was high for me at the time, and I didn't sell a single item. Bad weather kept the crowd size down, but I don't know if I would've done better even so.

St. Louis Art Fair Mock Jury 2018

Posted on February 5, 2018 at 2:03pm 4 Comments

Hi All!

I recently participated in the St. Louis Mock Jury this past January.  Even though I was unable to attend in person, I participated through their webinar.  As a newbie, I found quite a few take-aways from this experience. Even though I didn't really have a booth shot to submit, the biggest tips for me were on my future booth shots.  Don't overcrowd your booth with too much artwork, make your displays look professional and inviting, don't have any signage or promotional banners…
