Juries, Jurors and Scores of "1" - an option to consider

Posted on March 3, 2018 at 6:42pm 32 Comments

The jury system is bad - fundamentally flawed.  Each year it is the primary influence on our show year and our careers. Here it is again subject of a blog post.

Posts here and elsewhere bring up the same points.  Our fates are determined by jurors. Bad scenario. Art experts?  I think not.  They may have art backgrounds, they may work in musueums, the may be gallery owners.  They may teach "art".  So what?  Does their background make them qualified to choose?  Are they really "art…

Being told our position on a wait-list

Posted on July 12, 2017 at 10:25am 25 Comments

So frustrating trying to comprehend why providing artists their jury score and position on the wait-list of an event is such a difficult task for shows to perform.  A few do, very much to their credit and thank you to each and every show that does so.  Most do not.  Some actually get a pissy if you ask for the position on the wait list.

First point, we paid a jury fee for the jury process and that jury score.  Did we not?  And for that $25 to $50 jury fee, are we out-of-line to expect…

The Jury Process: Part 2 - Consistent Body of Work etc. etc. etc.

Posted on August 28, 2015 at 1:07pm 10 Comments

Let me premise this one by a wonderful quote from someone a few of you may have heard of:

God is really only another artist. He invented the giraffe, the elephant and the cat. He has no real style. He just goes on trying other things. - Pablo Picasso

Think God would make it past most juries these days?  Sure doesn’t seem like he has a “cohesive body of work” according to many jurors.  Guess he never had to face an…

The Jury Process: Part I - What Makes a "Good Juror"

Posted on August 27, 2015 at 8:29am 7 Comments

Now remember - these are just my thoughts and opinions from my experience and internal workings as an artist.  The point is not to discuss, support or argue with ME personally - but to think about and comment on these IDEAS.  And so importantly, ADD to the discussion other ideas and perspectives not broached here.  Growth the discussion with your view.  Just urge staying on point throughout.

Okay, onward.

So many facets to this question it is somewhat intimidating.  Excluding…

The jury process: Introduction

Posted on August 27, 2015 at 8:17am 3 Comments

I am posting three separate discussions on the issue of jurors and jurying at shows.  Please, do not write or respond on this particular discussion – it is intended only as the intro to the other three discussions.  This came about – besides the years of being an artist and previous good discussion on this site as recently as a few years ago – as a result of two comments made by artists responding to a post by a great friend of mine, Rich Fulwiler, in his blog “Total Disconnect”.  Most…

Welcome back, Ron. Great post about AA! Thanks for that contribution. I was pretty surprised that no one commented on it.

Hope you have not been ill, but it looks as though you are back in full strength today. This site is progressing and good people are joining and sharing. I can only check in now and then but am hoping enough members will chime in to keep it alive and make it grow.

Hey Ron. Went to your website and your show schedule was for 2006. Are you coming to MN anytime soon?

I just looked at your photography. Very beautiful. You don't have any east coast shore photos. There are several bird sanctuaries up and down the coastline you might consider. Also Chincoteague with the ponies. Sometimes the sunrise can be awesome as well as moonrises. It is very flat otherwise.
