Mark Zirinsky replied to Matt Gwinn's discussion What's the worst comment you've ever received at a show?
"the conversation went something like this: cust: "you are actually selling that crap?" me: "no it is a museum, nothing is for sale." cust; pointing, "but I want that one" me: "oh, ok then""

Mark Zirinsky replied to Kris Tracy's discussion Making money at art shows
"My $0.02: A good 'start up" goal is to breakeven, within the first 6 months or a year. Sales should cover direct show expenses, without valuing your time. For year 2, you should make a bit. year 3 you should make money. This is a…"

Mark Zirinsky replied to Jim Dalton's discussion What's the worst question you have been asked at an art fair?
"And this one, a variation.  Wife falls in love with one of my pieces. Shows it to husband. He falls in love with it. Wife asks husband "Where are we going to put it?" Husband, "Yes, we have no room" Wife silently looks at…"

Mark Zirinsky commented on Connie Mettler's blog post No La Quinta Arts Festival in 2020
"It was both an honor and privilege to show there at the last show in March, a great experience. I hope they come back. I think the delay is due to construction issues; we hope that they will be back in 2021. It is a true great artistic experience to…"

Mark Zirinsky replied to Connie Mettler's discussion Any ideas on how to change demographics at the art fair?
"Being fairly new to shows, now in my 4th year, I can already see how some shows get stale for me, and I need to give them a year off. There are two shows in Denver that I did not apply for this year, as it was time to give them a rest. Last year I…"

Mark Zirinsky replied to Edgar Williams's discussion Trying to get accepted to my first show...
"Your work looks great. A booth shot will show scale of the work (is it 2 feet or 8 feet tall) and the overall arrangement. You may wish to hire a professional photographer for your work, someone who is both good with a camera and photoshop. The…"

Mark Zirinsky commented on S Brian Berkun's blog post Saint Louis Art Fair Jury Results
"Yes, very insightful to see the results. I was fascinated to see both the quality of the entries, and how low my score was with this jury. In a show a few months ago, of similar caliber as St Louis,  the jury in full came by as a group to my…"

Mark Zirinsky replied to Allan Leon's discussion Whether to allow artwork photos or not
"A good question. yes, I have. When asked not to take a picture, I have had some responses similar to Larry's, others where they decided, after walking off, that they had to have it, and came back and bought it. And to larry's point, if…"

Mark Zirinsky replied to Ryan Moyer's discussion Jackson vs. Boulder (Pearl Street)
"Boulder can be a good show, a minor amount of junk, mostly superb artists. Setup on the mall is tough - if you are there at 6:00 am, you are late! It takes me about 4 hours to set up my booth, hang work, and drink coffee. Then, at times during the…"

What are the best things about art fairs
You see the reactions of people to your work. Ideas start tumbling out of other artist's mouth. People look, laugh, cry,
Best show ever and why
Cherry Creek Stanley show. My first show, sold my highest price piece with 5 minutes of show opening
Worst show ever and why
Loveland Sculpture festival. Almost no people attended the show; it was very disheartening.

What is one fun fact about yourself?
As an artist, I recognize that my business plan (make pretty things at great time and expense) is for the birds; and that is ok. The reactions of customers, when they squint, and their eyes go wide when the recognize what they are looking at, that makes it all worth while.
