Call for Artists, Making Money at Juried Art Fairs, Craft Shows and Festivals
This question is for those who sell reproductions or prints (as most photography is done).
Do you ever take orders as opposed to selling off the wall? If that doesn't make sense, here's why I ask...
Let's say a person visiting my booth is interested in a framed photo on display. I'm considering encouraging the buyer to let me ship it to them for free. If they prefer to take it with them, I won't hesitate to let them do so.
I know of an artist who does this successfully but that doesn't mean it would work for everyone.
Depends on factors like weight and size. I knew a photographer that sold unframed matted prints so successfully that he did many 5 figure shows. Another photographer who tried his hardest to go home with an empty truck every weekend.
For me, my sizes were always manageable so I wanted my customers to take it with them. Having to ship afterwards would create double work and take time away from replacing inventory.
Do what works for you.
I make etchings. I certainly wouldn't encourage someone to let me ship something to them, but if that's what they want and they're paying the shipping cost I'll do it.
Shipping or not shipping is a personal decision. Of course if the customer wants it shipped it should be on them to pay for it. I don't ever eat the cost of shipping.
