Pop-Up Tents Not Allowed?!

Hi there!

I'm a cartoonist in Chicago, and I'm looking to start doing some art fairs next summer.

I've been checking out tents, but noticed this is the info from a company that puts these on:

"Pop-up tents are NOT allowed."

Does that mean EZ-Up?

Thanks so much!

  • Ok guys. I have an Ez Up and do not have any problems with the tent. It is all about how you set up. This weekend in Fountain Square, Evanston IL (really bad attendence) my next door artist has a Trimline. I saw her tent 2 inches from hit me. I saw her lift 2 inches from the ground. At cross from me I saw two of these tents almost going flying. Yes I saw 2 ez up that need to be taken down.

With all do respect why we figure the problem b/c I do not have any those and yes I got my tent from Sams Club. The fault off all this problems are the artists. The problem may be not using propanels. The problem may be no weights or not enough or to much. The problems may be not opening the side opposite from the wind is coming. Closing all three sides is a bad idea. You can not allow the canopy become a trap for the wind. So, why we not put our experience and help to solve the problems. Do not blame the tent for the ignorance or the ..... from fellow artist. One note most the ez up that I see flying are from the jewelers.
  • Nope, not true... Please read my review of Amy's show at Cantigny last weekend. More than half the tents there were pop-ups. I've done a few of her shows over the last couple of years and she has visited my booth several times each show. Also, I kindly disagree with you Connie.... Also refer to that review. All EZ ups are not the same.... unless you buy at Costco or Sams.... When you purchase cheap, you get cheap. While the cheaper ones get broken up quite easily, the Eclipse II is steel. Also included in the review are other artists comments.... Trimline & other expensive tents also meet their end. Bottom line.... know how to secure the tent.
  • I'm not picking on you. Just trying to get accurate information.

Now as much as show promoters (and most artists) prefer everyone to have a more stable canopy, I've never heard of a show not allowing EZ-Ups and I've done shows for over 30 years. That's why I was asking about which show. This is the second time this week that someone posted that EZ-Ups were not allowed at a show but failed to specify which show.

I'll bet that pop up tents are a reference to those canopies that can be found at camping stores. I know that WalMart has one for under $100. I'd go out on a limb here and say that EZ-Ups are probably allowed at any shows. I know that some of the top artists on the circuit use tents like that and never had a problem getting into and exhibiting at shows.

KD used to have the "Imperial" model that was as sturdy as a Craft Hut and weighted more. Just make sure you have good weights and use them.

  • Listen, I'm not trying to make any waves here, I'm new at this and I'm pricing tents. If there's a certain type of tent that some festivals don't allow, I'd like to avoid that kind.

I found the info here under "Canopies."

I've seen EZ-Up tents referred to as "pop-up" and wanted to see if that was commonly understood art fair jargon.
  • Picture from Amdur's web site. Notice the canopy second from the left.

  • Please post a link to the information you're referring to on the Amdur web site. Also, the information Amy has about displays doesn't have a connection to any other shows.

Or are you saying that your initial post is about the Amdur shows? If so, I know tons of artists that use EZ-Ups or similar tents at her shows.

  • Point taken. Just wondering if there was some standard definition of "pop-up" tent.

I saw that in the General Info for this year's Amdur festivals.
  • What did the show say when (if) you asked them. Asking on a forum doesn't help if you don't specify the name of the show and their response to what a pop up tent is.

  • Absolutely, that is exactly what it means! They are the first to go in a storm. I'm pretty surprised to see this info. What event is this?
