I do mosaic art.  I use mostly stained glass, but some ceramic tile and other materials.  I don't know what medium/category I should apply as - glass, mixed media 2D or 3D....any help/advice is greatly appreciated, thanks.

  • Thanks Larry!
  • Thanks Jim.  I do make some things to hang on the wall, like windows, but then I also do chairs, tables, and other odd items.  I've been applying so far as 3-D mixed media, but my experience is very limited, I've only done 5 shows.  I'll try to look around and see what other mosaic artists are applying as, again thanks for the help!
    • Sounds like 2D mixed media or glass. It always helps to contact a show and ask their advice.

  • The answer is, it depends on the show. If your work is genuinely uncategorizable, mixed media is usually a good bet. It's a catch-all, and you'll be competing with some wildly varying artists. Glass would be a close second, even though you may use ceramic tile. Look at show web sites before applying and see if you can tell from the accepted artists which category will work the best, for that show.

Some shows will only have a few slots for the more unique categories such as 3D mixed media. 2D mixed media is popular with painters, collagists, some photography, drawing in some cases, and a host of other disciplines.

If you work is meant to hang on the wall, it's probably 2D, not 3D.
