I have done Easter eggs for about 45 years. I started out trying to do pysanky, but due to poor understanding of the process as a young teen, I failed miserably. (Paraffin does not substitute at all well for beeswax for the batik masking. And the grocery-store egg dyes only yield pastel colors.)

Over the years I evolved my own process of engraving the eggs, painting with acrylics or lacquers (depending on the colors needed), spraying with a clearcoat, then repeating the process until done.  Eventually I was able to get the level of detail I had been striving for, with the added advantage of texture from the engraved lines, which I think helps some.

There is a lot of symbolism in the eggs (mostly use traditional symbols and colors) and each egg tells a story.

So, at this point I’d like to look at showing/selling. I’m not sure what venue is best, though. I am hoping for some advice on whether craft/art fairs or other means would be best. I think they are best shown when they can be touched and handled, so likely not so much ETSY or internet sales.

Thanks in advance.

  • Gary, your work is beautiful, so detailed.

I am not the expert here ....there are many experts here in different fields.  The only suggestion I would give is to find high end art shows within the distance you are willing to travel, IF you want to go that route.  It is work .... first finding the right shows, sending apps/fees, etc.  Then you have the necessary equipment:  tent/canopy, display pieces, a way to take credit/debit cards, etc., as the minimum.

However, you could chose to go another route entirely, or in addition to the shows.  You may decide to work on consignment, wholesale, through a gallery, etc.  I am not at all familiar with getting set up with a gallery.  However I have done consignment and wholesale.  Both have pros and cons which are easily discovered upon a little reading.
