I am using a craigslist emergency purchase pop-up tent. It's really hard to set up. Specifically, I have hit or miss success getting the corners to snap into place. I can't seem to really get the stretch I need without another person to pull/hold opposite of me. (Or a big strong dude nearby to come to my rescue and pop in the corners, but who wants to count on that every time?)

Yes... I keep the canopy loose, but those corners are still a hit or miss.

I see videos of tents that show a single person pushing up the center and it clicks into place making (or so it seems?) the corners extend. Then they push the corners up (just a few inches as opposed to my 6 or more inches) as though there is no resistance at all.

I will only need the tent for 6 months or less... so I don't need a "tank" or to sink a bunch of money into anything. I just something that I can handle on my own.

Suggestions? TESTIMONIALS?

oh...just a thought: has anyone just staked one corner so it is stable to pull against? I guess I could just try that, too?

Through this time, we’ve learned a lot and noticed the differences between a well run and not so well run festival.

So here’s our list of the things that make up the ideal festival (from the vending artists perspective). Of course all of this is in addition to lots of sales from a huge crowd of art lovers!

In no particular order….

Provide some swag for those hard working artists! Stuff like:

Name badges/ID’s for all booth staff - Helps make it clear who the artist is and who can help customers.

Bottled water

Promotional item with festival logo (hat, shirt, mug, etc)

Artist discounts/suggestions on/from local vendors. On stuff like:

Restaurants

Hotels

Retail

Parking

Art supply vendors

Ensure there is strong cell service so we can connect to those payment processing systems. Work with wireless companies to bring in temporary towers as needed

Plenty of bathrooms, maybe even ones designated just for artists

Parking close to booth - Makes set up and tear down easier. Nice to have the vehicle near by for storage, etc.

Coffee, breakfast, snacks, etc for artists

Best of show judging

Prizes always are nice

Signage to put up in our booth calling out to customers that we won

Social media posts from the festival announcing the winners (that we can then like and share)

Remember the artist’s “assistants”

Most artists have someone come with them to the show, if not just to assist with set up/tear down, then to stay with them throughout the show. Include these folks! Name badges, swag, discounts, etc.

Have a very cool and useful website

Approval

When Booth assignments will be communicated

Set up

Show times - Open, Close, events, drawings, etc.

Take down

Strong social media plan, encourage/recruit artists to use hashtags, share before, during and after the show

Weather - Have a plan around weather. Someone to be in charge of monitoring it (before and during the show), communicating any potential rain/storms to all artists. Why? Because as we all know, our success at these shows is incredibly dependent on the weather!

Set up

Artists need to check in, in person at centrally located desk adjacent to festival grounds.

Staff available to monitor set up, ensure artists are set up in the correct location/position within booth space and assist with set up if requested

Set up allowed the night before the show!

Ability to pull up close/park right next to booth

Overnight security of some kind, could be just cameras and/or festival staff patrolling. OK to make it clear the festival has NO liability for lost, stolen, damaged art, displays, tent, etc.

Booth layout

Booths back to back, making it clear which way booths should face

As space allows, additional space between booths for additional tent opening, display areas, seating, storage

Consider where artist will sit, outside of the tent

Feedback form sent to artists after every show from festival organizers. I’m amazed how few shows do this.

Artist directory in show bill (also on your website). Help promote the artist! Include:

Booth location

I believe I can get serious replies.

Let me start by saying I do shows that usually offer some art but a lot of crafts. What I sell is on the crafts end. I do travertine coasters and have a couple coaster holders I distress and otherwise add some color to. A couple are bought and sold in the original finish. I find it is an easy up sell to offer the coaster holders as an accessory to the coasters customers are already buying. Those that are not altered are not eligible for Etsy so they are not on my shop. My question will be pertaining to my booth at shows.

I have started chalk painting home décor. I do a lot of vases, bottles, candlesticks, etc. They are made up of a variety of materials ... glass, ceramic, wood, resin, metal, etc. 99% of the chalk painted items are one of a kinds. They are usually flea market or thrift store finds that I upcycle and repurpose.

Now to my question. I am trying to boost my sales averages. I realize one way to do it to the up sells. For example, the coasters and holders. My difficulty is finding something I can offer as up sells for the chalk painted items. I believe this could add a good bit to my end of day total if the right thing(s) are available for up sell.

Do you have any suggestions for up sell additions for my booth at craft shows? I am including a link to my shop so you can get an idea of what I sell.

This would give me maximum display using both sides of each panel - just not sure it would be inviting enough to get people inside the booth or if they would hesitate to enter, feeling "trapped".

Has anyone every used this set up? if so, was it effective? Any input would be most appreciated!

I was close to overwhelmed with ideas on improving my sales. I learned better ways to set up my booth (like not focusing so much on matted prints). I heard about the importance of social media in the art world and was presented with wonderful ideas on ways to market myself (after I figure out all the ins and outs). It was great to meet both artists and art fair directors and learn about their experiences in their professional journeys.

So, last weekend I thought I would try a new tactic for sales. I completely rearranged my booth to have it feel more open and only had a few matted prints available. I’m a photographer, so this was kind of scary to me. What I learned was that this was not the exact right thing to do. My sales on Saturday were awful. I was fortunately able to change what I was doing for Sunday. I brought my table back into my booth and added about half of the matted prints I usually offer. While my Sunday sales were better, they were barely enough to have me break even. I know Sunday sales are almost always slower, so I’m thinking that if I had had my matted prints to offer on Saturday, I probably would have done better. I did agree with the jury panel at the Zapp conference that I was focused too much on the matted prints, but my response was too drastic. Often, matted prints are all I sell. There are shows where I don’t sell off my walls at all. It was a risky move that I learned was not a good idea. I am an optimist though. I just think that if I hadn’t tried, I wouldn’t have known. Oh well. So… for my show this upcoming weekend, I will try to find a balance between having matted prints to offer, but trying to sell off of my walls a little more successfully. We’ll see how it goes…

E-Z Up Commerical Grade Tent and Flourish Mesh Panels, New Mexicohttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/forum/topics/e-z-up-commerical-grade-tent-and-flourish-mesh-panels-new-mexico2016-11-21T00:46:02.000Z2016-11-21T00:46:02.000ZNatalie Voelkerhttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/members/NatalieVoelker

E-Z ES100 Pop Up Tent 10 x 10

Questions for you all...

1) Are there any 10 x 10 art fair tents in the $200 to $400 range that will NOT leak?

2) Is there a way to waterproof the tent I have (effectively) at this point? Will seam sealer and a waterproofing spray help at all? Have any of you done this?

3) ecanopy, from whom I purchased, first said that the tent was not meant to be used in the rain, and would not refund it. I found some claims on their site saying that "it's great for the rain," and now they will refund.

4) Should I just get my money back and start with another tent? which one? I know that Trimlines and Light Domes are great, but am not really ready to invest that high.

Thanks and look forward to some advice.

It had a blue top but otherwise was in perfect condition.

I retired my old tent, ordered a new top and walls from iCanopy.com and waited.

I got the tent top and walls, installed them to test for fit, and all was good! I'm in business!

Until it rained. Apparently the company completely SKIPPED the whole "water resistant" step when manufacturing this top. There was as much rain coming through the tent top as was being repelled by it. I had to run out during the show and buy tarps to spread over the top of the tent, and clear plastic to cover my goods -- woodwork and rain don't mix well.

I called, left messages, emailed, and more. ZERO response from iCanopy. What I thought was a good deal turned out to be a complete bait and switch.

I spent $100 on do-it-yourself waterproofing products, sprayed the tent down good several times, and had better results the last rainy show. But still... I never should have had to do it and the company never replied.

My summary -- use someone else for replacement tops.

It's ok, but I've seen some of those high powered jewelry lights where they have just a couple and it BLOWS my lighting away. It's like night and day! (puns!)

I was wondering if there are some go-to brands or products that are highly recommended? The last show I was at I asked the guy about his lights but he couldn't remember and only said it was from a jewelry show and told me the type of bulb but that led me nowhere.

What I imagined was something like a track light that I can easily just strap up top. I use an EZ UP right now but recently bought a Trimline.

Another thing I was worried about was energy efficiency, but it seems like that is a non issue because a few shows I've paid a seemingly outrageous $50 for electricity even though I was using 6 CFL bulbs. I can't imagine if they were those hot bulbs it would matter.

What I had been thinking is ideal is something like these http://www.direct-lighting.com/track-lighting/kits/halogen/line-voltage-kit-2543FC but obviously it needs a regular plug. Of course, being bright is the most important so I'm not sure on the number of bulbs I would need. Like I said I saw this one jewelry booth and it was 2 lights and bright as day! Really caught your eye as you move around.

buying a new tent, need advice/infohttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/forum/topics/buying-a-new-tent-need-advice-info2014-08-21T17:54:03.000Z2014-08-21T17:54:03.000Zmegan mckinnonhttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/members/meganmckinnon

I am going to be upgrading from my EZ-up set up in the next few months to a trimline/lightdome/showoff etc tent. It is held in the historic Third Ward area of downtown Milwaukee, and this will be it's third year. I received an email a few days ago, not only reiterating the Saturday morning set-up, but further notifying artists that if you want to drive up to your booth at all, you have to arrive on-site sometime after 3 AM (yes! You read that right!!) in order to check in, then get to your assigned staging area, where you will be lined up in booth order. At 4 AM they let everyone in and you can park immediately in front of your booth. No one is let out to park until 9:15 AM, whereupon you park your vehicle, then head back to open up by 10 AM. Apparently, this is necessary because of the large numbers of people in town for the International Harley Davidson Convention. And there ARE going to be large numbers of people in town because a month ago it was nearly impossible to find lodging anywhere in the Milwaukee metro (thank goodness for Air-bnb!). Anyway, I can actually understand the need to get us in and going well before any street traffic wakes up to confound things, but 3 AM! I will be spending this entire week wrapping my brain around it. Apparently you can dolly in from the side streets at any time, or wait to see if they can fit you in at a later time, but no guarantees of getting in front of your booth. I am thinking I may set up completely, then spread out my Thermarest in my booth to have a little nap before moving my truck.
Looking for 3 Flourish Mesh walls and StaBars for a one-diamond EZ up Canopyhttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/forum/topics/looking-for-3-flourish-mesh-walls-and-stabars-for-a-one-diamond2013-08-10T19:43:09.000Z2013-08-10T19:43:09.000ZJustin Bernhardthttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/members/JustinBernhardt

I am looking to purchase a used (in good condition) set of 3 Flourish Mesh walls and StaBars for my one-diamond EZ up canopy.
I would like to introduce myself, Betsy Bowers, a sculptor, from Sunny Sarasota, Florida. I'm new to the art fair world and am excited to get started. I've been creating art all my life, and finally have the right timing, and material combination to bring my flavor to the art scene. By day, my full time gig is designing T-shirts, and by night I play in clay :)

I do have a few questions for you... Any and all suggestions/comments are appreciated :) So far, I've had some great advise from people in the art fair scene, have read tons of great information on this site, and would love more insight.

For my first year, I would like to stick to the bigger Florida shows, and apply to what I can as a first year-er - I'm torn on where my art stands though, am I fine art, or fine craft?

If there are any shows you think my work would fit into in Florida, please let me know. Please check out my work at http;//betsybowers.com and let me know what your thoughts are.

I am quickly wrapping up a few pieces in order to take the infamous booth shot. I've read loads of great information on this site, and am excited to see how everything comes together. After seeing my pieces, please let me know if you have any booth suggestions... I've had a hard time finding more sculptural set up to inspire me.

I'll post my first attempt at a booth shot later this week and see if you have any advise. From what I've seen, you all give great advise and suggestions.

I'm happy to be here, and am excited to kick off my first show season in a few short months!

Thanks!
