I wasn't sure if that is nature, or cityscapes. Additionally, a lot of artist have told me that switching to abstract increased their sales. I paint in acrylic/oil, and in general do fantasy landscapes, but am open to any new subjects that will help all this art show work pay off bigger! Morganhttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/members/ScottJMorgan

Earlier this year I purchased propanels and a tent, lights, etc. and was planning to start doing a lot of art festivals and then proceeded to strike out at 3 major shows in New England. Well, I did cover my costs at the Marlborough, MA Paradise City show last March but it was a fluke.
So I'm getting the message from the universe (and showgoers) that maybe it's the wrong audience and approach for my work..which is abstract oil paintings and guitars. Then, I recently rolled the dice on an expensive undertaking, participating in the Boston International Fine Art Show. Sold a big piece there which was very affirming and validating considering the quality and quantity of 2d fine art on display.
And for the first time my prices were at the lower end! There was a piece there for $1..3 million!
I just can't seem to compete with the craft market and pricing of ceramics, turned bowls, textiles, handbags, candles, etc. I also noticed that some of the bigger outdoor fests, especially when the weather is nice and there are food trucks, music,etc..seem to be a source of entertainment and gift buying for most show-goers rather than a place to see and purchase fine art.
So the big question..Where to find fine art only shows in New England..or for that matter anywhere? Also, I'm trying to target the interior designer/architect/design trade and corporate placement market.
Any thoughts, resources you could share would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
best
Scott

So many painters, I have encountered, know that they cannot paint quickly enough to get all the work done, on their landscape etc, before the scene changes, light changes etc.

They realize their memory may not be perfect.

Therefore they take a photograph and paint while looking at the photo.

I have been told, this is a common practice. I know, not all are done that way. However a significant amount is.

If this is true, and so many fine art painters, sculptors etc, build from a foundation of photography, why do some painters have such disdain for the photographer and not consider photography Fine Art.

Transportation and Storage Boxeshttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/forum/topics/transportation-and-storage-boxes2017-10-29T18:31:59.000Z2017-10-29T18:31:59.000ZReid Barkleyhttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/members/ReidBarkley

Transportation and storage boxes, perfect for 2-D artwork.
I've been wanting to do art festivals for some time but decided this year to give it a go. I spent February making a new series of work (I make oil figurative paintings). I just purchased a tent and mesh panels and took a photo of a setup. Some paintings are still works in progress, but I put them up to fill the tent for the shot.

I would like advice on :

1. What could make the booth shot better? I photoshopped in grass instead of my cracked driveway,so I hope that's not too noticeable. I plan on using the french wall to stow packing materials. Eventually I'll have a reproductions bin and maybe a small table. But it's pretty bare bones right now.

2. Do collectors buy original portrait paintings of people they don't know? Basically, do you think my style would sell? I've always been drawn to the figure so it's all I ever paint anymore.

3. What shows would be best for my work. I've already submitted applications for two shows near me (I live in Central FL). I'm sure this is a trial and error thing, but I thought, why not ask. I have a sedan, so I'm borrowing my sister's SUV this year until I can afford a van. So staying in the FL region is key for this year.

Thanks in advance!

Not that others are not welcome, however I think it is most applicable to these mediums

In aforementioned categories, some shows sales are limited to area specific art.

Example: "Beachy scenes", "Certain architecture... items that are relative to that geographic location.

To try and educate the potential customer on the difference between "Art" and "Decorations" is problematic and not desired at the shows.

Someone living in south Florida may not want to hang a photo of ice breaking off a glacier. No matter how fine a piece of art it might be.

Just because a show is in Philadelphia, not all the images need to be of Rittenhouse Square.

It is difficult to determine in advance which shows are geographic specific. Just because a show is in a certain area may not mean the customer base is centric to the "area specific" purchasing practice.

How do fellow artists determine this in advance?

Few reviews seem to address this.

I looked and found these bags http://artpak.net/ to put my artwork in, for easy transport to and from fairs. I figure if someone buys a piece, I will put it in the bag and send them off with it.

Only problem is, I'm not going to be able to get these shipped in time from California for the show on June 25th.

Does anyone know of a good source for large, durable bags for paintings which ships from the East Coast? I'm in Virginia and will be driving down on June 23rd for this show. I've been looking online but haven't found anything else good or in the right sizes.

I already did the setup and takedown of all of my art for the first booth shot, and the reams of bubble wrap got dirty when trying to wrap them around the paintings. Would really like a more efficient solution, especially if I need to take pieces down quickly for a storm, or overnight if needed.

I'm new to this, so if you have a solution I haven't thought of, let me know! One good and one bad. The first one was ceramics which sold pretty well and was great for me to see my first art show (Artapalooza at cedar falls). And the second was paintings which sold little due to other factors ( Galena cellars vineyard show). I am now learning that there is way more involved than I thought of just setting up space and selling. I am also in the process of establishing a zapp portfolio to submit things. And in the process of figuring out how to revamp my booth. I own a pop up tent but no walls or ways to hang paintings. My questions today are

1.What are some alternatives for displaying paintings with no walls? Would that just be tacky? Should I really just invest the large chunk of stuff to pay for decent panels? I would probably need to take a new mocked up booth shot since my old one has me in it and no walls.

2.What is a good middle range wall system that is not bulding your own, but not as exspensive as pro panels?

3. What are your opinoins on panels? I like the grid for wind allowance but will it blow paintings all over? I feel like a solid wall would need heavier tent weights.

4. Lastly, I am finding that most art shows are costing around the $250-400 range. Is that an average price for a non juried show, more of an art fair, or music fest that offers spaces?

PS. My painting sizes usually are around 24 by 26" or soemthing close to that. I used to have three or four 3 by 2 foot paintings but those are gone now. Most of what I would display would be under that large size and unframed.

I have been trying to search through the discussions all over to find these answers but no one seems to answer it completely.
