My concern is giving "high Quality" copies.

This is not the booth shot. It is the work samples.

Jewelry, fabric, sculpture woodwork, metalwork etc are mediums that would take great effort for someone to copy and steal their work.

I am a photographer. A digital file is very close to a finished copy of my work. Of course this does not take into account, I still control the media it is put on and the full process, however it is most of the way there.

Giving out high resolution images of my work is a great risk. It is obvious how easy it would be for said work to be misappropriated.

If I give a copy with strong watermarks or other infringements it may not be acceptable nor pleasing for the jury.

If I submit in 72dpi, it likely would not be accepted or approved.

I am aware I have protection under copyright laws however that is closing the barn door after the cows are out.

I am not conceited enough to claim my work is more desirable than everyone else and therefore it would be misused. However I have been victim of theft and do not desire to repeat.

I have tried to make arrangements with promoters who are local to allow me to hand them finished, prints of my work and take them away when I leave.

However not all are willing. Also this is not an option for remote shows.

Some shows require "High Resolution" 300dpi or better samples.

I seek a good resolution to my desire for low resolution of high resolution work ;-)

Solutions? Ideas?

Has anyone ever been juried in and then bumped from a show?-Callanwolde, Atlanta GAhttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/forum/topics/has-anyone-ever-been-juried-in-and-then-bumped-from-a-show2014-01-18T16:30:16.000Z2014-01-18T16:30:16.000ZAmy Fletcherhttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/members/AmyFletcher

(From my blog post-trying to get others' views)

This is my first post and inquiry. I was so looking forward to doing this show at the Callanwolde Mansion in Atlanta, GA. I applied and was accepted by the jury. I went to pay my single booth fee (a week before the deadline) through ZAPP and received the message that it was "SOLD OUT". Confused, I clicked on the double booth (which I did not need or want) and it was available. Again, I tried to click on the single booth with the same message. After sending two emails and not getting a response about the "sold out" question, I finally got this e-mail:

2014 Callanwolde Arts Festival: January 25-26, 2014
STATUS NOTIFICATION
Dear Amy,

Thank you for your interest in participating in the 2014 Callanwolde Arts Festival.

When the jury made its selections, you were either Invited or placed on the Wait List.

The response to this event was immediate and very strong. Those who received the invitation to participate secured their space quickly, many with double spaces.

Although we set the deadline to confirm your participation (make payment) and open the Wait List on January 13, we are now completely SOLD OUT.

How did this happen?

The jury invited 90 artists to participate. This venue will hold a maximum of 86 artists. There is no room to "expand" to include more space. We were quite surprised that no one declined, and many purchased a double space. It is very unusual for our events to sell out so quickly and it really put us in a bind, because we hate to lose you!

We regret that we are unable to invite you to join us for this event, however if we receive any cancellations, you will be the first to know!

Don't forget, we have many more events in 2014! Click HERE to see them all.
If you have questions, please send us an email and we will do our best to reply to you quickly.

Sincerely,
Patrick, Randall, Lisa and Sarah
Atlanta Foundation for Public Spaces
info@affps.com

After going back and forth, insulted by one of the staff (saying I shouldn't have waited until the last minute to pay, which I didn't), I finally just gave up on them... they were selling double booths (and then not single) before everyone who had been juried in had a chance to get a single booth.

I was very frustrated and miffed...

Has anyone else have this happen to them? Should the people in charge of this made some of the double boothers, give up half their booths to accomodate the four of us that just were plain out of luck...

I am looking to apply to a few more juried shows in Iowa. Has anyone done Artfest in Des Moines?

I guess I won't know until I try if this is a better venue for me. I know that local craft shows aren't working. People are shopping for those $5 items and I don't have many of those, except for earrings.

I am new to AFI, I'm a long time ceramic artist and have been having shows in my home gallery for 2 years. I tried a show, not juried, this past weekend and it was pretty dismal, people were looking but not buying, and the quality crafters were amazingly mixed, the promoters seem to be taking a booth fee check from anyone sending one in. I didn't make back my money invested. Of course I knew it was a gamble going into it.

My expectations, (making money based on how the promoters sell their show to artisans), certainly were not met.

My question is a sort of poll I guess, and has most likely been asked in AFI before.

Do You only do juried shows, or do you try the non juried ones as well?

I am on the east coast and very central to the Sugarloaf shows does anyone have personal feedback about these larger events and the promoters? What should I expect from the promoters (other than promoting?).

Best customer question during the show: "Don't you have anything for under $14?"

(My smaller mugs were priced at 14, which I consider a bit low actually.)

I've been doing shows now for about 3 years, and the jury process is still frustrating and confusing to me. And if that isn't a wide open subject for discussion, I don't know what is! But I have a particular issue I'd like to bring up for discussion, and I hope to get some good feedback. My question is...is it possible to display and sell two related mediums within one booth space? I am a lost wax artist, and my primary medium is jewelry. But I also do some bronze sculpture which I would like to show as well.

I've done some inquiring, and was told by one promoter that I'd have to jury in separately and buy two booth spaces. But that doesn't seem doable since I can't man two booths at once. I've seen many booths that show jewelry along with mixed media or glass. I don't know what steps they may have taken to be permitted to do this, if any.

Also, I wonder if the jury might actually be more receptive to a jeweler who has other media to add to the show. So many jewelers applying to each show, maybe this is a good way to stand out? Any ideas?

I really don't have any problem with jurying in with two separate applications if I can put both in the same booth. And I'm sure I'm not the first person to look at this option.

Thanks,

Dawn

When in doubt, walk a show look at a show and then decide if you want to apply. The electronic application sites make is so easy to apply, but, if you are in it for the long run, you need to take care. For example...

If you haven't you need to sign up for www.juriedartservices.com. I just got notification today that a listed show, has extended the deadline and decreased booth fees.

This is a sure sign that you need to avoid. Look at the promoters hard and remember their interest is in getting your application fee. That is their number one job. This is a classic case of panic. Don't be afraid to take a pass.
