I have done a few "craft" fairs that were not juried, they were fun and I sold many small items. I however want to break into the art fair market with my glass work as I enjoy making larger "art" pieces but do not have a market in my rural area. I have pieces in a local art center and they do well.

I have applied to a couple art fairs but was declined. What am I doing wrong and how do I get into my first art fair?? I live in Michigan and there are lots of summer art fairs.

Thoughts and ideas from the pros out there???
THANKS in advance for your wisdom.

I'm new to AFI. I moved to our new home recently and haven't met other local artists yet, so I'm delighted to find a place where we can bounce ideas off one another, and help each other out.

My question - I'm a contemporary resin artist (painter, not crafter). I attended the Taubman Sidewalk Sale last year. It ended up in the top 5 of the festivals I did last year (in terms of $). Not great, but not bad.

This year (after learning my lesson about only applying to one show/weekend at a time and then not being accepted to it) I applied to both Tauban and Arts in the Middle and have been accepted to Arts in the Middle. Taubman isn't finished jurying yet.

I don't know anything about this show and don't find any reviews on it. Does anyone have experience at it? I have to pay for Arts in the Middle before they announce vendors for the Taubman fair and am not sure if I should bite the bullet and try it (bird in the hand....) or skip it and hope for the best with the Taubman fair.

Thanks in advance for your help and I look forward to participating with AFI and meeting some of you at upcoming shows.

And conversely, poor methods.

I've done 3 shows that were basically free-for-alls. They worked out decent because setup was on a Friday all afternoon (one had an evening show opening) so there was less conflict of blocking others tent space since it was spread out. Where there was conflict, artists cooperating made it work.

The best organized, I have experienced, has a person controlling vehicle entrance into the show site streets. They were in walki-talki contact to spotters along the tent sites streets. You were given basically 10-15 minutes to unload. The spotters were pro-active at bugging people to move their vehicles after your 10-15 minutes (if others were needing into a nearby tent space). Artist parking was very close by. You could then enter again (and again) to unload product (into an erected, dry & ready tent).

A more recent show had setup from 7am-10am on a Friday (4pm opening). Each had 1 hour with their vehicle at their tent site. No guaranteed return into area once you left.

For me, as I told organizers the week before the show, this does me little good. I don't use an EZ-Up so it takes me well over an hour to setup the Trimline, walls, etc... before I can unload my crates (of photography product, rain sensitive). And if raining/windy, I don't really want my product sitting on the curb covered in tarps while I setup my tent for my alotted hour. Then I have to get my crates back to my parked truck! It was a windy and very stormy weekend!

Good and bad method stories appreciated!

I'd like to relay suggested methods to the organizers of the last show (a local art organization). They were open to my suggested 10-15 minute method but said it was too late to change.

Beginner's Questions About Load-inhttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/forum/topics/beginner-s-questions-about-load-in2015-04-01T13:49:52.000Z2015-04-01T13:49:52.000ZAl Scovernhttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/members/AlScovern

Hello everyone. My name is Al Scovern and I’ve been digging into the archives of AFI for the past few months, a project that’s been immensely helpful. Many thanks to all of the generous contributors here. I make fast-fired ceramic pots and after many years, to quote another potter, I now own the world’s largest collection of my own work. Unfortunately, this pleases me way more than it does my wife—she got this crazy idea of actually selling the pots which led me, eventually, to AFI. So I find myself with a fairly full schedule of summer and fall shows, with the first one, Artisphere in Greenville SC, about a month away. I feel like we’ve got a lot of the technical stuff down (photography, booth design, tent, and those pesky weights) but on the eve of my first show I’ve got some questions about what will probably seem pretty basic to the veterans, all about load in and set up. Are artists assigned specific load in times or is there a general start time or does it vary from fair to fair? Is there some protocol for doing this, considering what I’m imagining as mayhem with a general start time? Is there some etiquette to this process beyond just remembering that you’re not the most important person on the planet? Are there tips that you can share to make this least painful (eg. arrive early vs wait for the rush to pass). Again, thanks for your help and I look forward to meeting many of you on the road.

Arts in The Middlehttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/forum/topics/arts-in-the-middle2015-02-17T16:35:26.000Z2015-02-17T16:35:26.000ZAmy Fletcherhttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/members/AmyFletcher

Does anyone know anything about this show beyond the basics that are on the website? I am moving from the sunshine state to the mountain state for the fall and winter. I am planning to build enough inventory to begin art fairs by spring. Anyone have any tips or suggestions on shows in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio, Indiana, Virginia, West Virginia?

As booth fees are going up - and this could be for various reasons (higher advertising fees for example), do you find shows offering a better quality show or added value making the fees worth while? If not, what would you suggest to make higher booth fees easier to swallow?
Side note/food for thought: Promoters/show organizers can not guarantee anyone's success - it is up to each individual craft artist. - Michelle
In need of seasoned advise.https://www.artfairinsiders.com/forum/topics/in-need-of-seasoned-advise2009-03-23T22:43:02.000Z2009-03-23T22:43:02.000ZMichelle Jeffrieshttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/members/MichelleJeffries
Hello,
First I would like to say I am so excited about this on line community. I am somewhat new to the art festival venue. I participated in the 2008 KC Art Plaza Fair which I consider to be my first art festival. (However, I have done a few other shows that just weren't the right fit.(My poor family travels with me on these endeavors.) I loved the plaza show the artists there were great and I really enjoyed the setting. I hope to do the 2009 show as well. I have also accepted a show in Colorado which will be the farthest drive yet. I was hoping to get some feed back about shows in the midwest. I also have lighting and pedestal questions but I will save that for a later date. Thanks to all.
