<p>We live just south of Nashville, in Franklin, TN.</p>
<p>My wife, Deborah is a fine artist (acrylic with palette knife) of 25+ years and she runs Abide Studio and manages the Artist's Row in historic "The Factory at Franklin". This is a community of working artist studios that have exposure to retail traffic. We opened in 2004 and are still running strong.</p>
<p>Deborah has been a member and patron of AFI and I (Rick) have just joined. Her web site is <a href="http://deborahgall.com/deborahgall/Home.html" target="_blank">www.deborahgall.com</a> and the site includes our art show calendar.</p>
<p>I served corporate America for over 25 years (GTE & Verizon Wireless: sales, marketing, general management) and have gladly passed that baton. These days, among other things, I help run our art business, counsel artists in business planning, and enjoy writing about art, art doers & lovers, and creativity in general.</p>
<p>2 years ago we hit the road for <em>art shows and festivals</em>, and while we have made our share of rookie mistakes, we are learning fast and enjoying growing success. And I do mean enjoy...it's a crazy life style and it breeds a sense of adventure & community and feeds my strange sense of humor. It directly led me to begin a blog entitled <a href="http://theartbiz.wordpress.com" target="_blank">'Left Brain on a Gypsy Train'</a>, a blended outlet for my own creative energy as well as some practical artbiz bitz now and then. I plan to post some of those articles to AFI when appropriate, so I hope they prove useful.</p>
<p>We look forward to being part of the AFI tribe...to the giving and receiving...'cause life works pretty good that way.</p>

<p>I've just gotten off the waitlist at A2 South University show, and I'm currently scheduled to do the Amdur North Shore at Old Orchard (IL) fest the same weekend.</p>
<p>Considering all I've read about possible bad spots, parking costs, lodging costs, long hours, etc. etc. about Ann Arbor, is it worth trying it anyway in the hopes of better sales than Old Orchard? I'm a traditional (landscape/still life) oil painter. Can I even do the A2 show alone or is that crazy? I'm a newbie at all this...</p>
<p>Anyone have insights to be able to compare the 2 shows?</p>
<p>Thanks so much for any input!</p>

As stated in the Detroit Free Press, a gun rights group called Michigan Open Carry is forcing communities to enforce their right to openly carry guns in public. Previously, there is a state law that does not allow guns at events of over 2500 people. Arts Beats and Eats has never allowed guns at their event.<div><br/></div>
<div>This is a big deal and there is a lot of comment from the community about this targeted push from Michigan Open Carry to force local communities to allow this. It puts a cloud over the work of 21 charities who benefit from the event as well as being a popular and well attended affair.</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>There is a call from local leaders to get help from the state to reinforce the ban on handguns at large events. I hope sanity will prevail. It is certainly bringing a lot of attention to this event although maybe not in the way desired.</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>One thing about metro Detroit events: they are always well staffed with law enforcement. In fact, police cannot take this weekend off because of this event. So I do feel that it is a safe event. Another thing is that if you drink and carry, you lose your right to carry. That is the law. So if you want to drink, don't bring your gun!</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>Although there has not been any mention of this on Art Fair Insider, as far as I know, and the fact that it just happened, I feel that it is better to be informed about what you are going into before you get there. You can have time to get the facts, feel what you feel, and develop an attitude of going forward with a positive mindset. I would rather get my bumps over early than when I get there!</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>Connie, if you have any more information on this, please let us know. Bruce & I are looking forward to the event!</div>

As many of us do art fairs and craft shows, many of us for quite a long time I might add, is there a new "normal" when it comes to doing shows? Sales expectations? The way shows are juried (or should be juried)? The type of art found at events? And if you don't think there is a normal (things are too mixed to say yes or no) how do you see (or would like to see) shows say 2-5 years from now?</div>Arts and Craft Fair Blueshttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/forum/topics/arts-and-craft-fair-blues2009-10-18T23:44:44.000Z2009-10-18T23:44:44.000ZSharon " Sherry" Wilsonhttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/members/SharonSherryWilson<div>I spent the past four weekends criscrossing Florida participating in two juried shows, checking out shows in the central part of the state, and looking at communities that will be having shows to which I might want to apply. I am wondering what happened to the arts and craft show? When I enter a show I sign a contract that states that the work displayed in my booth was made by my own two hands. In the shows recently I found mass produces salsa and spices, packaged dog biscuits (with a biscuit company logo on the bag), plants, soap (from companies I recognized), candles (I have seen on the internet), dips for chips, perfume, tee shirts (I have seen in catalogues), bracelets (that if turned over have the mauufacturers stamp on them) etc. (The bracelets I found in the show last weekend in Winter Park.) I did see some crafts but alot of what I saw was buy/sell that belongs in the flea market or plants and flowers and food that belong in the green market. I don't try to sell my goods where I do not belong. I doubt the green market promoter would allow it. Why do the arts and craft promoters allow these vendors to sell their goods where they don't belong? I guess it is to fill a booth and put money in their pockets. Maybe the green markets are doing so well they don't need to fill spaces. It is hard to compete in todays ecomomy with the person who is selling something to put on the table to feed the family, something to plant in the yard to enhance the beauty and value of your home and or something for the family pet. Where has the arts and crafts show gone? I am disappointed in what I am seeing and I hear the general public saying the same thing. They come to see and buy hand made items and are discouraged by what they see. I hear people saying they are not going to return to the show the next time because it is not what they expected it to be. The trend is down economicly for most shows. I'm sure the economy has a lot to do with that but I think also that the consumer is unhappy with the products provided. I would be unhappy too if I went to the green market and found only frozen food. The customer can not speak to the promoter to convey this message so instead they just aren't buying and aren't planning to return to the show. It used to be just buy/sell we were competing with. Now it seems to be the grocery store. How do you feel about this and can anyone offer solutions?</div>Flu season affecting show attendance?https://www.artfairinsiders.com/forum/topics/flu-season-affecting-show2009-10-23T16:17:54.000Z2009-10-23T16:17:54.000ZMichelle Sholundhttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/members/MichelleSholund<div>Ok are you just as sick of hearing about swine flu, excuse me H1N1, as I am? I see antibacterial containers in Target and even churches, like the one I am a member of, go as far as wanting to forgo "passing of the peace" because of some people believing they'll catching the flu. So, my question is this, does anyone have any thoughts about whether or not this flu season having an affect on show attendance leading up to Christmas and other major holidays coming up?

I truly get that. However, why does it have to be as soon as you pull up to your booth space and start erecting the canopy and unloading the first thing people have to talk about is how awful shows are, poo poo the fair before it starts and get all kinds of grumpy? Misery loves company - well, yes. But can't the subject be changed? Setting-up at shows can be frustrating - realizing you forgot something, issues with neighbors hogging extra footage or inches, or time issues ... Why add to it by talking about negative things? Traveling to shows I am trying to put myself in a good mood telling myself - I am going to do well - this time you will meet your sales goals! Forget about past yucky shows this is make up for them, all while listening to upbeat music too.
Am I the only one feeling this way? We all know shows aren't great - they haven't been for awhile. Complaining about it won't make it better, just jinx things in my opinion. So, I am opening the floor to you all - what are some great subjects you have talked about at shows? What makes for meeting great art friends at shows? And importantly, how do you deal with negative complainers at events?
I can tell you I deal with negative complainers by simply ignoring them and trying to not let them get to me. I had one at my last show and she would just barge into my booth and say things like "I still haven't made my booth fee" or complain about something else.</div>Children and Art Fairs - How do you handle unruly kids?https://www.artfairinsiders.com/forum/topics/children-and-art-fairs-how-do2009-05-29T11:53:20.000Z2009-05-29T11:53:20.000ZMichelle Sholundhttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/members/MichelleSholund<div>Hey all. I hope I am not posting too many questions here, but this question was on my mind regarding art fairs. Generally speaking, kids are ok at shows - they learned to not touch things that break (if their parents teach them well) or are just well behaved and help their parents find things to buy (those are the kids I love). However there is always the 1 - 10% where kids are not that delightful. What are some ideas on how you handled unruly kids at shows (whatever the situation might be)?
For me there aren't a whole lot of situations I can recall having to "take care of" a problem child - except those who like to take a TON of samples. I have witnessed kids from strollers pull down table cloths where items were broken and the same goes for hyper active kids and kids who cry - where no one will approach the booth with a 10 ft. pole if a screaming child is present.

At the shows I participated in last year, you could see there were less artists filling up spaces. My question is, with some shows having less artisan exhibitors, has anyone noticed if this has any effect on "your" sales? One one side I am thinking if there are less exhibitors that increases the likelihood of more sales with those present, but on the other hand I am thinking customers may be displeased with the "lack of variety" deterring them from buying. Any thoughts?</div>
