So many painters, I have encountered, know that they cannot paint quickly enough to get all the work done, on their landscape etc, before the scene changes, light changes etc.

They realize their memory may not be perfect.

Therefore they take a photograph and paint while looking at the photo.

I have been told, this is a common practice. I know, not all are done that way. However a significant amount is.

If this is true, and so many fine art painters, sculptors etc, build from a foundation of photography, why do some painters have such disdain for the photographer and not consider photography Fine Art.

Wickford Fine Art Director Offers Improvement Ideashttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/forum/topics/wickford-fine-art-director-offers-improvement-ideas2017-02-06T13:39:15.000Z2017-02-06T13:39:15.000Zcarrie jacobsonhttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/members/carriejacobson

I've had a note from the new director of the Wickford Fine Art Festival, in Wickford, RI. She was the director for 20 years, then left, and for the past few years, there's been a different director each year.

Here's her note, in part: "To maintain the integrity of the festival all artists will be juried in the same fashion, therefore all Wickford Art Association members will juried to be in the festival, even if they are artist members. Only one browse pin per tent is allowed. There will only be artists on the streets of Wickford. No vendors or our sponsors will be allowed next to the artists. Many complained last year about the hawking. We will enforce the rule of no note cards, multiple prints etc."

This has always been a good show for me, and I've not had trouble with sponsors or hawking, etc., as I'm typically on a side street away from the fray.

But I love hearing from a director with passion and plans for improvement.

FYI, this is not a zapp show, and it does have an odd jury system - when you get in, you're in for three years before you're juried again. Personally, I like this, but I know others don't, and I understand why...
I exhibited at the Fritchie Art show in Westhampton Beach NY the first weekend of August. It was my first time at this festival/fair. I suspect this is a very good small festival when the weather is more bearable. Images attached so you can get an idea of my genre. I brought drawings and paintings, primarily abstract work.

Also please note that the Westhampton Beach area has TWO outdoor Art Festivals in similar locations. The other festival is a Paragon festival which includes a lot more fine crafts and occurs earlier in the season. The Paragon festival is in a less shaded location and is harder to find from the street. I checked it out two years ago and spoke to some of the artists. They said they'd made sales despite the baking heat. (It's easy to get the two events confused).

Sales were meh and the crowd wasn't great ... BUT the weekend was hotter than the inside of a lobster pot and just as humid (you always want to be on the OUTside of the lobster pot). Weather is always a variable and out of the organizers' control.

It was so hot that I and many other artists were watching our tents from the nearby gazebo. Otherwise we would have had people passing out from the heat. Given the weatyher situation, it's no surprise that the festival goers were kind of dazed and not terribly enthusiastic. Fortunately the organizers secured the nice shady park, and not the baking hot grassy lot down the road.

There was a small window of time on Sunday morning when the heat had lifted and the sun had not yet gotten to lobster boil yet. During that bit of time when the weather was bearable, I saw a decent amount of interest and sales. I suspect this is a very good small festival when the weather is more bearable.

The event was well-organized. They lost some space and adapted with fewer artists, but it was still a decent size - not puny and not overwhelmingly huge. A gelato or ice water vendor anywhere near the park would have made a killing.

The staff and volunteers were a visible presence and were helpful. They gave out free donut and hot coffee tickets to the exhibitors. There was supposed to be someone selling cold bottled water, but they never showed up. The staff were interested in identifying and fixing issues like this as people brought them up.

I'd go again and hope for better weather - I wish Westhampton was the one with good weather and not Mystic Conn. Mystic was a horror.

A (shortened) bit of background..

I make jewelry, and have done so since I was very little. I'm in my 5th year of business, and it has progressively gotten better and better over the years. I started out selling to co-workers, then online, and branched out to doing shows including many farmers markets. As the new year comes along, my aim is to keep my momentum going and venture into a new direction. My work is in a couple of galleries, and I have been featured at said galleries. Long story short, after speaking with a few artist friends, I would like to give some bigger art shows a shot. I've been browsing Zapplication, but am quite intimidated by the way they speak of booth set ups. Currently I use a 10x10 pop up, but have seen talk of artists using Craft Huts. Is is necessary to purchase one of these down the line? My artists resume also isn't that lengthy in regards to fine art shows I have done in the past - could this hurt my chances of being accepted?

I know that many artists out there have been in my similar situation, so how did YOU make the transition from crafter to artist?

Estero or Art in the Gardens?https://www.artfairinsiders.com/forum/topics/estero-or-art-in-the-gardens2014-10-02T15:10:15.000Z2014-10-02T15:10:15.000Zmegan mckinnonhttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/members/meganmckinnon

All the reviews I read from Estero seemed to be from quite some time ago when it was held in october. This year the dates of these shows are nov 15-16 and I'm deciding which to do.
Any suggestions? I'm a realistic ocean painter with prints from 20$ to originals at $5000.

Landscape After Landscape After Landscapehttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/forum/topics/landscape-after-landscape-after-landscape2014-07-22T00:31:07.000Z2014-07-22T00:31:07.000Zcarrie jacobsonhttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/members/carriejacobson

A neighboring artist's son volunteered to watch my booth for a bit on Sunday, and so I took a short walk through the show at Westport, CT. What I saw really got me thinking.

Booth after booth displayed landscapes. Landscape after landscape after mind-numbing landscape. Mountains, hills, farms, fields, sunsets, sunrises, salt marshes, they went on and on and on and on.

Westport is a fine art show, and a good one, I think. The quality of the work was pretty high. But when I got back to my tent, I looked at my landscapes (one wall out of the three) and began to rethink pretty much everything.

I know that many factors play into the look and feel of a show. The juror's taste, of course, is one of them. And perhaps this jury just liked the same kind of landscape. But when I think of the other fine art shows I've seen this summer, I think they have had a similar sort of sameness. As an artist doing the shows alone, I don't get out much. But I can say that when something is different, it really, really stands out.

I paint in oils, with a palette knife, and I have thought that my style and approach are different enough to make me stand out from the crowd. But what has sold for me this summer has by and large not been landscapes. It's been florals and what I call cowscapes.

So I think I'm going to shift the tone of my display. I love painting cows, burros, goats, dogs, animals in general. So I think I'm going to try including even more animals in my display, and more flowers and more people - and maybe just a couple landscapes, and see what happens. I'm posting a photo of my booth at the show, with one wall of landscapes, one of animals, one a large floral.

I'm interested to hear any thoughts you all have about how you make these decisions, and what you're seeing when you look truly critically at a show's content.

westport booth.jpg

Halloween - Ghoultide Gatheringhttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/forum/topics/halloween-ghoultide-gathering2013-01-31T00:51:43.000Z2013-01-31T00:51:43.000ZGloria Irla Marlowhttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/members/GloriaIrlaMarlow

Has anyone here ever done the Ghoultide Gathering held in Chelsea Fairgrounds Michigan last year and previously in Northville Mi? I've been attending for three years as a patron and the list of artists is growing. When they held it in Northville it was in a little park filled with historical Victorian buildings where the artists were divided up and housed in different buildings all of which were decorated for Halloween. One house actually had a coffin with a covered manikin in the parlor for an old fashioned wake. It was wonderfully charming and atmospheric. But with the inclusion of new artists they needed a larger venue and moved to Chelsea and into a large building which was nicely decorated last year. All the artwork is Halloween related and the priced were on the higher side with many of the smaller ornaments averaging $50 - $100 and so on. All high quality work. Very unusual and extremely unique. You can see many of the artists on EHAG Emporium

http://ehagemporium.blogspot.com/

I've asked Ghoultide for information about applying for this September's show and I'm thinking of applying to EHAG as well. So I was just curious if anyone else here has done the show or seen the show and what your thoughts were.

Metzgerhttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/members/CarolFMetzger

I've been absorbing everything I can form this forum, trying to plan for the 2013 season as I have missed most of the boats for this year. I am bothered by a seeming paradox. One promotor states explicitly on the wesite that all components of jewelry in the fine craft fine art shows must be hand made by the artist with the exception of faceted gems, findings and chains.

1. In what category does this leave seed beads? I do some on- and off-loom bead weaving. I do not make my seed beads by hand.

2. Are the jump rings used in chain maille "findings"? I make some myself and purchase others.

3. Where does this leave jewelry designsers whose work consists entirely of assembled purchased findings and chains and "faceted gems" (actually semi-precious smooth stones and manufactured gems)? At least one such jewelry designer is on the exhibitor list for some of the very same promotor's shows. The entire design relies on purchased components not made by the designer.

I do not wish any of these people ill will. I am simply baffled. I want to make good choices as to how and where I market my own art.

We heard that the St. James Court Art Show in Louisville KY is a great art show. (We heard this when particiating at the Berea Crafts show in KY which was a great show but not as strong for 2D.) My husband works in guache and pastel and we are trying to determine 1) overall, the best art fairs to apply to, and then 2) the best location at the St. James fair. We've heard St. James has several sections ranging from fine art to everything else. Each section is separately run and at this time, applications are being accepted for the Belgravia section but not the others. Can anyone provide feedback on this event and the different sections please? Many thanks in advance!
