After months of not feeling well, shortness of breath and fatigue, without any specific diagnosis, he was admitted to the hospital earlier in the week, to get answers. He was diagnosed with systemic cancer, put on machines to make him comfortable and waited for some improvement. On the 25th, his wife (of many many years and business partner and manager) Carol, knew it was time to let him go. He was still active in art fairs, having most recently participated in the Carmel Art Festival in Carmel, Indiana.

Mike was well loved in art fair circles with friends everywhere. He created luminescent water color paintings and, I'd guess, won the top award at just about every show, including the $15,000 Best of Show at Gasparilla a few years ago. He will be missed not only by his friends in the art fair business (Gert and Sheila Olsen, John and Camille Staropoli, Bruce Peeso, Allan Teger and Barbara Krupp, Jude and Michelle Pokorny, Rick Preston, {you can probably add your name here}) but by art collectors especially in Florida and the Midwest.

I'm recently retired and hoping to make my life long PASSION FOR ART into a second late in life career. Right now am in the R&D phase and working on my business plan. I have found invaluable information here and appreciate all the generous support from other artists. Really, there is nothing else like this out there in the way of forum activity that I have run across.

Anywho... wondering if anyone has used the Show lights from Silicon Lightworks that have a dedicated Lithium battery pack. http://siliconlightworks.com/ It looks like the battery can support two or more of their lights with battery time going down with each add on. Wondering how bright these lights are and what your opinion of this product is?

I make Sterling Silver Jewelry with minerals and gemstones and will need the sparkly light. I am intimidated by the Marine Deep Cycle Battery setup. Thanks for any replies and for all the comradery here in AFI!

48" Fletcher 3000 for salehttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/forum/topics/48-fletcher-3000-for-sale2016-08-14T00:31:28.000Z2016-08-14T00:31:28.000Zmark brownhttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/members/markbrown

Hi,

I live on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, so the Midwest is a drive for me, but I thought that if I got into two or three good shows on consecutive weekends, I'd give it a try.

I got into Summerfair in Cincinnati, the Omaha Summer Arts Festival in Nebraska, and the Columbus Arts Festival in Ohio. So off I went.

I'm an oil painter, and I use a palette knife to make large, bright paintings with a heavy impasto. I have no prints. My prices range from $100 to $4000.

Summerfair is held in an amusement park on an island in a river near Cincinnati. The rides were closed for the weekend. The park is lovely, with twisting paths and beautiful plantings. Some tents were set up on grass. I was in a paved courtyard near a building housing bathrooms, the artist refreshment area and a Saturday morning brunch event for supporters of the fair.

While finding my booth spot was difficult (the layout of the park is complicated; even with a map, I had trouble finding my way around), set-up was a breeze. I drove right up to my booth, and was able to leave my van there during set-up, as there were no tents across from me, and plenty of room for everyone.

There was no storage behind my tent, but I was able to leave my handcart with boxes and a couple extra paintings across from my tent. This was helpful. Parking was close and plentiful, and I ended up dollying most of my stuff out to my van at the end.

Rain, and the forecast of rain, kept people away, according to artists who have been at this show before. My sales were OK. Not great, but not terrible. My spot was right at the beginning of the show, which might have had an impact on sales. And in a trend I've seen all year, people were buying - but not buying 2-D wall art. A guy who had beautiful floor lamps, made of graceful turned wood, sold a whole bunch of them, ranging in price from $700 to $1200.

Omaha was a different story. The show is held on a single street near a small river downtown. Set-up was easy; I was able to park very close to my booth. There was ample room for storage behind the tent.

Heavy thunderstorms had been predicted, but the forecast improved as the weekend wore on. A small bluster blew in during set-up, and I heard that someone's tent had collapsed, but once that was over, set-up was fine.

Volunteers came around during set-up and on the first morning of the show, with 68-lb. tubes of sand. All you had to do was say that you could use some extra weight, and they'd give you as many as you wanted. An inspection group came by on Friday morning to make sure tents were weighted properly.

Again, I was at the start of the show, and again, the forecast was for rain and thunderstorms. Saturday morning, it rained for hours, but people came out anyways, in droves!

I had a fabulous show, one of my best ever. I sold eight or nine paintings, including several large, expensive ones. Cowscapes are part of my collection, and all of them sold, as did two cowboy paintings from a series I made last year. People had more western tastes than I'd expected.

A side note - I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn for this show. It was far more expensive than my regular hotels, but it was two blocks from the show. I could and did dolly work back and forth.

Columbus was the most difficult of all the shows. The show is very large, running down streets on both sides of a river in downtown Columbus, and on two bridges crossing the river. I heard several artists complain about being stuck on dead-end dog legs. My booth space was on one of the bridges. Set-up was OK; my time slot was the latest in the day, so I could park and take my time.

Columbus expects you to have 500 lbs of weight. That's a lot. I had all my regular weights - four hanging tubes of concrete, four EZ-Up sandbags, and my new weights, 180 lbs of Ingots from Canopyweights.com. I also had four Home Depot buckets filled with bags of gravel, and two additional bags of gravel. And I was tied to the bridge railing. Honestly, all this weight made my tent look crappy, but in the end, I was very, very glad to have it.

This show is long - 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., so lights are required. For me, this is ridiculously long. I do the shows alone, so 12-hour-shows are tough. Also, I don't believe that there are many people who buy large paintings at night. And finally, I tend to get up at 5 a.m. By 10:30 on a regular night, I'm asleep!

Friday was hot and windy. Very windy. My paintings flapped and slapped against my mesh panels. My tent groaned and swayed in the wind. After a downpour in the afternoon, the wind slackened, but volunteers told us that one booth had lost its roof, and another had collapsed completely.

Saturday was brutally hot, with thunderstorms predicted. It rained on and off all day. During one cloudburst, one neighbor got stuck in his tent with a fair-goer trying to convince him to be saved. I got stuck in my tent with only very nice people, thank heavens.

The downpours grew stronger throughout the day. I had a large river in my booth, though I was near the apex of the bridge. I heard that people at the bottom of the bridge had giant pools of water in their tents.

As night fell, thunderheads moved in, and it was clear that a big, big storm was coming. Around 8:30, five minutes before a huge storm hit, we on the bridge were told that the show was being called. It was too late to leave, so my neighbors and I unplugged, zipped up our tents, and sat inside while thunder and lightning crashed around us. I have a skylight in my Showoff tent, and I must say I regretted it during that storm. Each bolt of lightning was frighteningly visible through my skylight. But my tent held, high and dry!

Saleswise, this show was going along at the same plodding pace as Summerfair, until Sunday, when a lovely woman bought my largest painting. So Columbus was scary, but successful for me.

All three shows were brutally hot. Most of the days reached the 90-degree mark and stayed there. When I've done shows in the West, organizers have always come around with water for the artists. Omaha did this, though they had some problems with supply. There was water available in Columbus and Cincinnati, but you had to go and get it. Again, doing shows alone makes this difficult.

Every show had artist refreshment areas. Cincinnati offered fruit, along with the regular stuff. You had to pay for it, but it was cheap. They weren't making money off of it. Breakfasts were offered everywhere; the awards breakfast in Omaha was worth getting up for. I can't eat gluten, though, so generally, the breakfasts were off-limits for me, and that's almost always the case. I wish organizers would get some gluten-free stuff!

I also wish they would have recycle bins at the shows, and that they would leave the trash cans up until after the artists leave! Omaha included a trash bag in their packet, but that's the only show I've ever seen do that.

Putting your just sold art into trash bags...https://www.artfairinsiders.com/forum/topics/putting-you-just-sold-art-into-trash-bags2014-08-31T16:32:00.000Z2014-08-31T16:32:00.000ZTom Snyderhttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/members/TomSnyder

This practice is not acceptable. The symbolism alone is bad enough. You just sold a 2k piece of art and you put it in hadty bag...wtf. I am embarrased as an artist to witness this. Spend a few dollars on some bags you cheap d bag. I received a postcard, but ignored it initially because I had it mixed up with the Milwaukee Domes show, which happens also to be in a Mitchell Park, but a different Mitchell Park in Milwaukee proper.

My alternative choice is a show in Springfield IL, “Art Spectacular at the Carillion”, at the Springfield Botanic Garden. If anyone has done either one of these, I would appreciate your input. Artists love it when they get into one of the "biggies" and their art stays on the site for a year giving them lots of chances to catch the eye of art collectors.

Some art fairs do a great job of showcasing the real reason for their event, others, not so good. Artists rely on the shows to help promote the art. Is anyone doing it well? and what are your criteria for a good site?

Really important to me is that I am heading to Philadelphia to attend the Buyers Market of American Craft. I know a bunch of you will be there but this show is so huge. If you are going to be there will you please reply in the comments so we can meet?

I have been accepted into the American Art Marketing show this April and I need to send a confirmation asap. I have never done any of their shows before & I need some input. The booth fee is more than I usually pay but it is inside and that is a plus. But in addition to the normal fees associated with the show, travel expenses, lodging, meals, etc. I will need to get a Conn. sales tax # and that will cost $100. Trying to figure out if it is worth the expense. Does any one have experience exhibiting in one of their shows. All I can find in the search is how nice and supportive the promoters are. That is indeed important but I will be putting out a great deal of money for this show - I make hand forged and fabricated silver and copper jewelry. Thanks

Big Weekend Coming Up! A few that come quickly to mind: State College (PA), Cain Park (Cleveland Heights, OH), Madison (WI) and the Krasl Art Fair in Michigan. Also big in exhibitors but not as good in quality there are Wyandotte and Plymouth in metro Detroit.

I'll be in St. Joe, MI, on Friday night and Saturday and look forward to meeting many of you there. On Friday evening I'll be in the big white tent hosted by Schu's Restaurant on the main street across from the show. It is a good central place for us to meet up after you set up and I'd like to treat you there to a little AFI hospitality. Can I expect you?

Where will you be? I was extremely disappointed! I do a lot of shows in Southwest Florida. This was not the quality I am accustomed to! I have not applied to out of town shows and was excited that I was accepted! Unfortunately, it was not was I expected.

This show was NOT an "art show". It is a "craft show". There were some excellent crafters. There were also some buy/sell. There were some mediocre crafters and quite a few "country crafters" There were a lot of jewelry booths, ranging from assembled beaders to a few fine goldsmiths. There were around 200 participants. A comment I frequently heard was "I thought this was a juried show". I would not have been as frustrated if I had been aware that it was a "craft" show.

I am a metalsmith/jeweler. I was located on a corner. Directly accross from my booth were two goldsmiths, a beader, and a beach glass/silver designer, Right behind me was a fabric person -- She had dresses she designed, but did not make -- two booths worth. Next to me was a fabric purse/bag maker, across an apron maker, a pillow maker -- and so on. When I walked around the show, everyone I talked to was unhappy about the sales.

There is an $8 fee to get in and a $5 fee to park. The location is at the Navy Stadium -- which sounded great! But it was not nice. It is the dirtiest location I have done. It is a sand parking lot. We were constantly cleaning the cases. It is a FILTHY location. The booths are backed right up next to one another. There is no storage space behind the booths. I paid the extra $25 to have a corner location and I am happy I did. I got a little bit of a breeze.

It was a well-organized show. However, will I apply again. Probably not. I came primarily because I have family in the area and a nine-month old granddaughter I want to visit.

I do not recommend this show.

What's your favorite restaurant while you're on the road?https://www.artfairinsiders.com/forum/topics/what-s-your-favorite-restaurant-while-you-re-on-the-road2012-04-07T01:19:49.000Z2012-04-07T01:19:49.000ZJim Parkerhttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/members/JimParker

Reading over Bo's post on Chicago shows, there was a recent comment on the restaurants in Chicago. Having lived there for a while, it brought back a flood of memories, and a thought:

"What's your favorite restaurant while you're on the road?"

Of course, this brings up the secondary question, does it make it easier to do a show in a big city if you know some of the insider places to eat? Of course it does!

Not an easy question to answer, but way more fun than outing buy/sell. So I'll give it a start with some of my favorites:

Chicago downtown:

When doing one of the downtown shows, (Gold Coast, HA Tribune Tower, Wells Street/Old Town), you have to try Chicago Pizza. There are a lot of 'em too, but my favorite is Lou Malnati's. There's one just down Wells Street from the show, and many scattered about town. You might like Edwardo's better, for the stuffed spinach pie; or Gino's East (one the originals, again near the Wells St. and old Gold Coast locations). And of course, Giordano's: the one on Rush Street is always packed.

And if you're at Wells Street, you must stop in at Al's Beef, right on W. Ontario. Grab some eye-talian beef on a giant hoagie bun with some peppers and onions, and some fries to go with it. No booze, but hey, you're working!

For breakfast, you gotta try Tempo, on Chestnut, just off LaSalle; or Walker Brothers Original House of Pancakes, just off State Street on Bellevue. Both touristy, especially on weekends, but both a classic slice of Chicago life. Give yourself plenty of time, though, because there's always a line. The Ohio House looks like a dive, and it is, but it was one our favorite spots for lunch when I worked in River North a few years ago. They talked about tearing down the nasty motel next door, but so far, I think it's still going. The HoJo's on LaSalle is good, too, but not as good, nor as classic.

Top end restaurants in Chicago. There are many, many. Best martini is Naha, on Clark Street. The strip steak with the mac and cheese is to die for. Specialities vary with the season, from basics like the steak, to sumptuous Mediterranean delights. Not cheap by any means, but worth an anniversary meal. Quiet, relaxed, elegant without being stuffy. Plan for it.

Right across the street is perhaps the finest Mexican cuisine in town: Rick Bayless' Frontera Grill, and it's big sister right next door, Topolobampo. Frontera does not take reservations, but Topo does. Frontera is loud and boisterous, and you can get a great margarita with some guac while waiting for your table; or you can reserve way in advance for a spot at Topo. Both places serve up Mexican cuisine that is out of this world. Not your usual tex-mex rice, beans and cheese, but exquisitely prepared dishes, heavily researched and lovingly prepared by the kitchen staff. Our office was in the same space as Rick's test kitchen -- we ate there several times a month and it never got old. Clark & Illinois in River North.

Asian food is also tops in Chicago. Try Naniwa for sushi, again right down Wells Street, south of the old Gold Coast show location. The sushi chefs are quick, efficient and the fish is as fresh as anything in Chicago. The tekka don is quite awesome if you like sashimi and rice. If you're doing Bucktown, try Bob San on Division. Hotter, hipper and more lively than Naniwa, it nonetheless is run by the same guy - Bob. They used to serve a mean oyster shooter at Bob-San. Panang Thai, right on Chicago and Clark is a sleeper, too. Inexpensive, relaxed, good pad thai or curry, if that's your style.

I'm kinda sad that I'm not going back to Chicago this year. The restaurants definitely make the shows easier to take downtown. And I haven't even mentioned Fogo de Chao, the Billy Goat, Blackbird, Portillo's for dogs and burgers, Rosebud on Rush, or my all-time favorite fancy place to eat: Spiaggia. Nestled on the second floor in the Bloomingdale's building, with a killer view of Michigan Avenue, the food and ambience here is romantic, elegant and expensive. Wear a coat and tie if you want a table here. It's definitely worth the experience if you have a 10K show.

Do I have a favorite show in Chicago? Not anymore, since Amy moved Gold Coast to Grant Park. But I definitely miss the restaurants. Now I've rambled on too long. What's your favorite city for shows, and the best places to eat there? Nelsie, I know you've got a few. How about the rest of you?

Linn Creek Arts Festival, Marshalltown Iowahttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/forum/topics/linn-creek-arts-festival-marshalltown-iowa2012-05-01T12:23:02.000Z2012-05-01T12:23:02.000ZLinnea Lahlumhttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/members/LinneaLahlum

Has anyone done this show? It’s a small, community festival that attracts tourists who are vacationing in the area or Seattle area residents who have weekend homes on the island. The locals come out in support of this and they have great volunteer support. Whidbey Island is very supportive of the arts, Langley is listed in John Villani’s “The 100 best Art Towns in America”. The Island also has a large population of retired folks who are very supportive of the art shows in the area.

Load in is a bit difficult, they stage it by area and it always takes longer than they allocate time for so the last sections end up loading in a lot later than expected. If they were a little more strict about making artists move their vehicles before they set up, they could probably eliminate a lot of the issues. This year they sent an email stating that check in time began at 3, they neglected to mention that they wouldn’t start load in until 5. We had contacted the organizer, knowing we were most likely in the last section to load in, she confirmed that via email so we didn’t even show up until 7, were told we needed to wait a bit so we went back to our RV and ate dinner before even starting the process. When we arrived at our booth location at 7:45 we were immediately assigned some helpers who got our truck unloaded and all our booth items placed in our spot very quickly. I don’t remember any helpers last year, so this was a nice surprise. We took just over an hour to set up our booth and by 9:00 we were back at the RV relaxing for the evening. Much easier for us than some of the artists who got there at 3 and couldn't load in until 7 or later. There were a few frustrated people by that time.

It appears the weather forecasters mixed up the forecast for the weekend, Sunday was supposed to be the warmer, sunnier day with clouds on Saturday. Just the opposite occurred, Saturday started sunny and stayed that way all day, perfect weather with temps in the low 70’s, nice breeze for part of the day and blue skies all day. It was great weather all weekend for an art show.

Sales were brisk for the first 2 hours, we were able to make our booth fee, ferry fees and all other expenses by noon. About 12:30 it seemed like everyone took a lunch break and it was slow for the next couple of hours. Late afternoon brought some more sales and overall it was a decent day for sales. The show ended at 6:30 so we were able to enjoy a cookout with some other artists back at the RV, telling stories and sharing a few laughs.

Sunday started very slow with very few shoppers until after lunch. We had many more sales on Saturday, but smaller dollar items. Sunday we sold a couple of medium priced items as well as a few people who bought multiple pieces so overall our sales were a little lower on Sunday, but with far fewer sales. Overall, given the track record we were okay with the sales for the weekend, would have always liked more, of course.

Load out was much easier than load in, they did regulate it a bit, but did a great job to ensure that there weren’t any bottlenecks. We were able to load out fairly quickly, get the trailer hooked up at the campground and were thankful the Sunday evening wait for the ferry was much shorter than the Friday afternoon wait had been.

Opportunity for Artists in NE Kansashttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/forum/topics/opportunity-for-artists-in-ne2011-02-01T18:06:08.000Z2011-02-01T18:06:08.000ZCyreathia Reyerhttps://www.artfairinsiders.com/members/CyreathiaReyer
There is a great opportunity for artisans in NE Kansas (Manhattan area). The Little Apple Trade Co. is a new Cooperative that we have started. There are several booth spaces open at reasonable prices. The location (217 McCall rd) is a great location. The road is expanding to a 4 lane with the opening of a new Menards. Lots of road traffic, and even more on Kansas State University Game days. The limitations is that only one booth of any one type of art - no competition. Sorry jewelers, but I already have a jewelry booth there. Just wanted to let anyone else know about it.
