I'm turning to my ArtFairInsider community because I don't have any artist friends who have had this done that I can ask and I think this is a critical issue for 2D artists, although it might be for my 3D artist friends as well.
My understanding is that there are two basic approaches to this surgery. One is to correct one eye to distance vision and the other eye to close-up - and let the two eyes sort it out I guess.
The other approach is to correct both eyes to distance vision and wear glasses for the close-up (and possibly mid-range?) vision.
I've worn glasses most of my life so I don't mind wearing them after the surgery, I just want to end up with vision that will allow me to be able to work on my art - drawing and painting - without struggling to see, as well as vision that will work for daily life - driving, reading, etc.
So, this is a shout out to any of this community who are 2D artists who have had this surgery to tell me your experiences - good or bad, as well as what you might do differently if you were to do it all over again. I'm only going to be able to do this once so I'd like to get the best result possible and not end up regretting my choice.

I work 2 D and have one functioning eye. I had the good eye done this week. After long deliberation I chose to hav3 my focal distance remain about the same at about 11 inches. This means that I read and work upclose without glasses and need glasses for everything else. For what it’s worth, I am happy with the decision.
Thanks R.C.! That's exactly the information I was looking for. I had pretty much decided to go that route anyway but it's nice to have someone who's actually had it done confirm for me that it's working out.

Not a 2D artist, but I just completed cataract surgery on my second eye. Both eye surgeries were complete successes and my eyes see almost the same as before (nearsighted). I am still wearing the same pair of glasses that I wore before the surgeries. He asked me what my preference was and I told him I still wanted to be able to read without glasses. I've never minded wearing glasses.

So you had both eyes done the same way, not one distance and one for near right?
And you wear your glasses for distance, correct?
I don't mind wearing glasses for distance either so maybe that's what I'll do. In the past I've always been able to do my close art work without glasses but that changed in the last year.
