I am starting to look at application for 2013 and have noticed this highlighted image requirement:

"We project our images at our jury using state-of-the-art projectors direct from the exact electronic files submitted by the artists."

Okay, but this year we need 1920 for the vertical side, not the horizontal side.  So, will my images hang together visually if I have a mix of black borders and non- black images?  Do I need to re-do all my images now?

  • Look for my new post explaining it in more detail. I spent some time on the phone with Leah and she walked me through the way the monitor jurors see the images.

Just like in the past, I recommend uploading your images squared 1920x1920 with black borders masking rectangular images.

  • Hi Karen,

I just wrote about this issue:
    http://bermangraphics.com/blog/black-borders-or-not-for-zapp-images/

What it comes down to is whether the shows you are applying to are projecting or using monitors.

For projection they've never seen the borders because of the lighting in the room and size of the images. For monitor jurying they never saw the borders because the images were on a black page background.

Now it's an unknown. I'll find out Monday if projection jurying has changed and I think monitor jurying is now done with pop up enlargements. More about it Monday when I speak to ZAPP.

I should also add that every problem ZAPP has had displaying our images in a fair manner has been because they started allowing non square images to be uploaded into the system without squaring them. They could have easily run a script on every non square image as it uploaded, squaring it with black borders and have all three quarters of a million images exactly the same size, especially since the first half million images uploaded were sized that way.
