  • Vendor does have a certain "tube steak" connotation about it and it certainly always makes me think of food rather than art, so I agree that it's pretty off-putting to be lumped in the same category.  Maybe we need to make organizers and promoters more keenly aware of how offensive it is...

  • Greg,

No but I've seen the guy with the imported baskets from Uganda get one, but that's whole other post, LOL

  • Anyone ever been to a show where the Hot dog Vendor won a Best of Show award?

  • Most people think of vendor as something anyone can do.
Artist is typically thought of as someone that is gifted in a skill set and capabable of releasing emotions through creation.
If you put your heart out there for people to scrutinize, you don't wanna be called a vendor!
How can you put the carni guy hollering at passers by and an artist in the same category?
  • Another sign that the person is ignorant about the industry they're working within.  It's a shame, really.

  • Amen! Apparently for some folks, the word vender is an all purpose call for cash.  As an entertainer, I receive vender applications several times a year!  What's up with that?

  • Isn't the very definition of vendor someone who buys and resells?

I won't apply to a show if the artists are disrespected enough to be referred to as vendors or if there are other indications that the organizer isn't an experienced art show organizer.  There's little to be gained by getting involved in a clusterf**k like that.

  • Technically, the word "vendor" means someone who sells, but I think most foks upon hearing the word, do think of the "vending machine" and the hot dog guy. That's why it makes me crazy. I understand people who promote small local craft shows not getting it, but I am seeing this term in many larger, more quality driven art and craft show prospectuses where they should know that we artists are a sensitive bunch who need to feel respected. :0)

  • you can always get food and snacks out of a "Vending (vendor) machine butcha can't art out of a "Arting" machine...

  • I wonder if they call the guy in the first photo a "Food Artist" ?
