Call for Artists, Making Money at Juried Art Fairs, Craft Shows and Festivals

I want to tell you about a show promoter Terry Mcmullen who promoted a show in Amagansett Long Island. I have to say she did nothing other than collect the booth fees and leave. She promised a high end art show, live entertainment, advertisements and large crowds. None of it happened. In the middle of the show the artists started a revolt and it got ugly. I have never seen something like this before and I have been doing shows for over 15 years. The trash wasn't collected till 11am Sunday and between the birds and the wind the place looked like a dump. I can only hope that I never see her again.

I would love to find a decent show on Long Island. The in-laws are all there and it would be good to combine a visit with a show. But every one I think might be good, turns out to be like this.

You would think with all those beach houses there they would have a decent show somewhere!

I'm not from Long Island, nor do I plan to do any shows there. But since the original post didn't mention the show name or date I did a quick Google search and found this article of interest about the show.

AND does anyone have anything to report on PARAGONS july 4th event in THE SAME PLACE/ maybe too many shows with ??? reputations doesn,t help/ BTW you nor I are "designer labels" and that is what is sold in those fancy stores //When we ventured into that part of the country/ most of our sales were from Floridians who could say that they bought it in the "HAmptons" we even sold a piece of glass to a person from our hometown//but the crowd was way sparse and we were very lucky, and had to work hard at each sale-- Fair Winds

Wow, Geoff, that was some link! I can't believe all the comments ...

Just keep asking Bill and Jon...someone had to have been there ;)

Thanks for posting that article. Thats the show and it was pretty bad. I spent the night in my truck and I watched the wind and the seagulls have a party in the garbage. She has a way of twisting the truth to fit her story. No matter what you say she will say she did nothing wrong . Like beating a dead horse. So enough said about her still looking for good shows!

Yo, Don't ASK ME ::: I AM ASKING FOR REVIEWS TO BE SHARED WITH ALL::: Review Paragon's shows//or how does 3 out of 5 shows become Top100 rated???? after only 2 years of existance // ANYONE OUT THERE???? oh ; now there are 11 shows this year and very few reviews of their major east coast promotions //WHY????? (btw, my experience w/paragon was fine, & felt they were very much committed to the artist, & not the $$$$$/ but that was 2 years ago, so I want IMPUT (e-t) //WHY also are there no ARTRIDER reviews as they too are a major promoter of events //that is run by Staci(AN ARTIST IN HER OWN RIGHT) & Jeff// and they do a damn good job of it also// TOM- takes a while to figure out what works for each of us// This site really helps us all young or old //WE HAVE TOO SHARE OUR VIEWS TO SURVIVE. We are unique, and need to help one another, especially since we all make a luxury item that nobody really needs in these economic times//enough// FAIR WINDS

"playground bullies"

Well.

There's the problem!

Word choice trouble, more specifically "noun trouble".

Amy, this is not a 'playground'.

If you are looking for a playground, you are not going to find it amongst a bunch of professional artists. This is a business and a primary livelihood for many of us.

When I pay my booth fees, jury fees, hotel costs, overhead costs in the gallery (rent, insurance, taxes, utilities), vehicle upkeep, materials, display materials for the gallery and for shows, promotion costs, dealing with primadonna artists who wouldn't know the word "professional" if it fell out of the sky on top of them, just to name a few things before I can even consider taking care of our house payment, taxes, groceries, etc. - I am not thinking "playground". I'm thinking "survival".

So I guess you will have to excuse me if I don't share your pollyanna view of the art fair circuit. I work hard and I share a lot of things with a lot of people. Giving you a "golden ticket" itinerary for shows that will make you rich just isn't very high on my list of things to do on any given day.

Your opinion of me matters even less.

You are selling a unique type of sculpture and I think they are very well made works of art. But you haven't earned your "bones" yet - darling. Some big shows think your work is good and the customers do as well. Ride that wave - darling - but remember, this is a tough business and more leave every single day.

Count your blessings and watch out for the real bullies that are out there.

There are plenty of them hanging around and chances are you've met many of them. Many of them will eat their own young.

The reality is, I am not one of them - darling.

Kumbaya.

Sorry you didn't get your way and had me roll over and cry "Uncle"!

I know Holly.

I like Holly.

I've read what you have written.

You are no Holly.
