Proof that work is not buy/sell (Receipts)

This issue has been dragged thru the mud many times but thought i would add to it.   Doing a show in Prescott Az. that is put on the Mountain Artist Guild.   Shows in prescott have a reputation for letting a LOT of buy/sell into their shows.  But this year I read that those doing clothing are required to have receipts for their materials.   Am hoping this will become a trend with the MAG shows but will see.  When i went to get my booth suggested that everyone supply receipts for their materials.  Will try to report after show is over to see what happens  Maybe more promoters should ask for receipts instead of just filling space with anyone,  buy/sell or the original artist or craftsperson

  • Love the comment about photos of your workspace bringing cold calls from housekeeping services! I would probably also get calls from security companies because my workspace looks like it has been ransacked!

  • A few shows that I have done ask for a photo of a work in progress. It's easy for me to have a photo of a half-carved block, the finished version of which is one of the jury photos. The same would work for most media, I think.

  • This may work for some mediums but not for painting. It is so easy for "painters" to buy from China then stage pics of them painting. Receipts for canvas, paint and stretchers easy to get but actual work still made in China.
  • How do they know it is workshop. Could be someone else's. Mine was and is messy but my picture shows ME working in it. At least they know it is you
  • Steve, I am applying to a show that asked for a photo of my studio, which is spread out all over the place and generally a mess. But my assumption is that I personally should not be in the photo, as it skews the "blind jury" process. I have pics of myself working, but not sure anything that makes sense to anyone, although I could get some cold calls from housekeeping services.

  • Talked to promoter who asked for receipts also asked for you working in shop. Got pictures of hands putting something together. Hands, where is a picture of the artist. There is a website I have seen of someone welding No gloves., nothing covering legs or arms. That makes no sense to me.
  • My application to an October art & craft show at Coco Beach Florida required a photo of your "work space" which I provided. The intent was to weed out the buy/sell cheaters, I guessed. Whether it works or not will be interesting to see. I also have decades of stash in fabrics, lace, and embroidered pieces. Receipts? I guess I could show receipts for quilt batting, thread, rulers, etc. But to show receipts for specific fabrics I use to create items with would be impossible. Maybe in case of a requirement like this they could accept a photo of my closets crammed with fabric!

  • In regards to Linda McGurn's comment, I too, have yarn that I've had for years as part of my "stash", not to mention a friend who gives me yarn from her mother's senior knitting group for free!  I could come up with some receipts but not for everything...alternately, I think handknit items look handmade anyway...

  • While I agree with the comments on buy/sell, who hasn't run into them, I have been doing art/craft shows since 1985, for the past few years  have been trying to use up odd skeins, bits of yarn, fiber that I have accumulated. So, in this case it would be pretty hard for me to still finds some of the old receipts for materials.Plus, with 4 moves, I have tried to get rid of stuff that I no longer need, like old receipts. Would hate to not get into a show for this reason, which, at this point, I can do nothing about.

  • My wife is from the area and everyone loves to walk these shows for entertainment and food. Haven't met anyone who has actually purchased art yet. Hopefully the show will try to change that!
