Price Points 2014-15

Hey Yall!

Did a couple of shows a few years ago and now ready for some action in the art show scene. I have been reading the good the bad and the smack nasty on art shows on the AFI and want to do well next year.

Soooo is a good price point of $25-$100 good or do we load up the big guns at $300-$500? I am just a painter but have 5 galleries now and ready to put ALL of the money in my pocket vs sharing. (They are doing well but it takes a while to get paid.)

Thanks again from Sunny Steamy South Carolina.

  • Thanks again for everyone's tips. I usually put a large bold crab or bright fish that can be seen for miles - it does bring them in and have sold it by the second show. Honestly, I have the heebee jeebies due to not doing a show for a few years and scared to death but will get my mojo when I do a few.

Husband would like for me to make a few clams in order to support my canvas and have been doing it well for a while. Again tired of getting half with the galleries and I pay for shipping and travel delivery, it is starting to wear on me a little.

  • Heather, we ave been doing shows for 10+ years now.   We are photographers and never know what will sell.

At some shows it is all $50.00 items.   At others it is all big stuff.   Then we do the shows again and it is just the opposite.     We have rural and urban photographs and one time we sell mostly rural and that same show next year goes for the urban.  So it is best to have everything ready because the consumers are very impulse orientated.   They go to the show looking for some small art and find a $200 piece that catches their eye.    You just never know.

  • price points can vary depending on the show you do... for flat artist like myself I need to be open to the fact that not all shows produce the same buying crowd....so some shows the price point is 20 dollars, in others the price point can be above 500 and above.  on new shows I bring the full range to see where it will fall and adjust.  shows that I have attended before I look at my data and see where I need to be for price points.  so I would say you need to bring a full range for shows that you have not done or have little data on.

  • For leather, mine range from $20 for set of napkin rings to $5000 for saddles. Best sellers are belts $40-$85. Other stuff in the $100-$500 price range - gun leathers, personal leather goods, horse tack.
