  • Autum..I thought of some of that stuff...thanks for making me more deeply!!

Wendy, that first response was for you. :) I'll get the hang of this!!
  • Thanks!
This is what my husband wants to do. What kind of weights do you use??
  • When I first started, I hung my portraits from the side of my tent with fishing line, with weights at the bottom. It kept them fairly straight and had a decent effect. My next step up was to build lattice screens with a staple gun and hinges. That worked very well

  • Suzi,

Aug. 14 is a long ways off and plenty of time for you to visit shows and study displays (this time of year there are several shows each weekend). The question you ask is a complicated one with many variables. A search on the Discussion section for "display" should produce many ideas. Here are a few other things to consider:

    * 8X10 is tiny in an art show... you are competing with hundreds of artists trying to capture the attention of patrons (you have about 5 seconds to make an impact). You need a few large framed images to attract interest and I wouldn't go with less than 16X20 frames (even that's small).

    * you said: "I do have a tent-no sides and two tables". We romanticize art shows as being nice sunny events, but in reality we are extremely vulnerable out there in the elements. I would not go to a show without tent wall... especially as a 2D artist. What you describe sounds like a rocket that will take off in the smallest gust. The problem is that what goes up must come down... an all to often on someone else's display. A quick rain shower with a little wind and you might just as well pack it up, because your day is over and your stock is ruined.

What ever display system you set up, you must take into account your neighbors on either side of you. Do not go into a show without accounting bad weather possibilities. If you are not able to purchase a good display in time, then I would suggest a rental. Talk to the show coordinator.
  • Thank you Autum! I do have a tent-no sides and two tables, but was wondering if there was a particular table top rack or any nice "cheap" way to display for now. I would love to see pics of photo booths! I'm working on buying an awesome set up from a retired crafter, but "family" business is hindering that process and I'm afraid I won't have it in time for my first show. All these years attending art fairs..wished I would have paid more attention on how they displayed! :)
  • I would suggest that you look for shows that have an emerging artist category. Cost is usually minimal and very often they supply the tent and display system. Usually you are sharing the space with other artists. Connie may know of several shows in your area that offer this. Often this is for college students but I've been to several shows where the emerging artists category is opened to all.

Here are a couple shows that offer such a category:
    Mt Gretna
    Des Moines Arts Festival
