  • We found attending the open jury very insightful.  Last year we attended round one and this year we attended round two.  We had not heard materials and techniques statements last year, so it was neat to hear them aloud in round two.  In my opinion, terms that might be redundant within a category might be better left out... for example... the word "archival" was in the majority of photographer statements.  That is just my opinion, but it is not our category/ not our problem.  I am constantly tweaking our statement... never sure how technical to get (i.e. will someone who is not a woodworker understand the terms).  We felt good about our images and booth shot (but we will continue to make improvements and are building an upgraded display for this year).  The best booth shots really look like a little gallery.  Personally, we found it inspiring and motivating to view the competition.  There is a lot of great work out there, and we try to remind ourselves of that fact when the rejections come.  We were particularly interested in observing the wood and mixed media categories, since we could apply under either category.  I was left with the impression that we still could go either way.

  • What did you learn, Trisha? Anything helpful for your next round of applications?

  • No, you cannot see the score during the open jury.  On day two the jury was encouraged to openly discuss the work, but not a lot of that occurred regarding specific work.

There was discussion about the booth shot and what is being evaluated.  The director Scott explained to the jurors that the booth shot is to show how the work will be displayed, and if the artist brings work reflective of the first four images, but is different than what is showed in the booth shot that is fine.  The booth shot is just an example of how they will present the work at the show.  Making improvements to your display is also acceptable, so if the artist brings a different display that is fine as long as it is not a downgrade from the booth design submitted in the application.

There was another discussion about what is acceptable in the photography category, as far as manipulation... if it could be done in a chemical darkroom, but is done in photoshop that is fine.  If not, it would belong in digital media.

I found it helpful to attend so we could see if we made it to round two, see our work on the big screen, hear our materials and technique statement aloud, and also to see how we stacked up others in our category.  It is also inspiring to see so much awesome artwork.

  • Can't make it down there from where I am at....however, I'm curious... looking at the pic presented, do you get to see the score that the judges give the artist whose art is being shown on the screen and any comments that are made?

  • Wish I lived close by. Would love to see this.

  • Thank you for having an open jury! I always enjoy it and find it very insightful and practical. If anyone gets a chance to attend one you should!
