Chicago's One-of-a Kind Show: Questions

I'm a 2-D artist selling prints of my digital paintings. I'm exhibiting at the One-of-a-Kind Show at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago for the first time. Two questions for you 2-D artists who have done the show in the past:

1. Should I bring my Pro Panels? Do most 2-D artists use them, or is it better to just stick with the white walls and use nails to hang things?

2. Booths are given four track lights. Should I order a couple more? How's the lighting?

Thanks, John

  • Don't know about the walls but I can tell you that they have lights and, well, if they are broke they will try to fix them. But I was there before and they could not fix one... Lesson learned. I saw some booths there and they were almost dim. Overall it's an intimidating show given the investment, so my best advice is to be proactive -- if you have lights bring them just in case.

Worst case scenario if you bring the lights is you just lugged them to the show for nothing. Worst case scenario if you don't bring the lights, your paintings are under-lit.

  • Use their walls.  I prefer drywall screws and a cordless drill to screw them in rather than banging in nails (I know they say no power tools but they don't care, at least about a cordless drill).  The lighting was fine.

  • I believe the booths are actually given 6 track lights. When you get there and think you need more lighting you can buy more.  Think it's like $70 a light? The lighting is very good so I think you'll be fine.  Most artists do not use their propanels and just hang everything on the walls.  Hope this helps!
