Call for Artists, Making Money at Juried Art Fairs, Craft Shows and Festivals

Canton Museum National Fine Art Show, Ohio

This was the 2nd annual show. I did it in 2010 - sold a few smaller things, but had a major sale 2 months later from clients that had seen my work at the show, so I figured it was worth going back.  This is a 3 day indoor show at the Canton Museum of Art in Canton, OH.  Friday night is preview night, artists were treated to a banquet style dinner with wine before the opening of the preview party, which patrons paid $50/ticket for an evening of music, gourmet food, and wine - the attendance for the preview party was a little over 200.  Artists were permitted to take part in the fair the last hour of the evening. It was a wonderful atmosphere, and I believe some nice sales took place that night . Saturday was very slow, it was beautiful outside - the first nice day in a very long time, and it kept the patrons away.  Sunday came with heavy May showers and drove the patrons to the show.  We had steady traffic, and many big sales happened during the witching hour (last hour of the show).  Some artists were not so fortunate and went home with no sales, unfortunately that is the nature of the beast....     The move in and out is very easy, they have heavy promotion for this show, but the attendance is no where near what it should be for this calliber of a show.  They really listen to the artists on how to make the show better, it's extremely artist friendly with free food, beverage, parking, booth helpers, multiple loading areas with free use of dolly's, and the space itself is incredible.  There were supposed to be 80 booths, but I only saw 72 listed and it consisted mostly of sculpture, pottery and 2D.  There was some jewelry, but I only remember seeing 3 booths.  It may take a couple years for this show to really take off, but I've had good sales 2 years in a row now, and will do it again next year.

Congratulations, Katie, for supporting this new event and on your sales also! Good job on that.

I heard some other talk about this event "through the grapevine" today with talk of all the things that the organizer, Ron Beahn, did right.

So here's the challenge. I've been involved a number of times at organizing an indoor event (Toledo - 3 times, Indianapolis and Novi). Every time a beautiful show was put on, in Toledo we really pulled out all the stops with a charity partner, community support, amazing group of artists, party, dancing, preview gala, many $$$ spent on advertising... making these really happen is such a challenge. Sure wish there was a magic bullet.

I also heard about an outdoor event that had its third show recently. It started mostly invitational with some of the top artists in the country, a stellar artist advisory committee who knew all the things artists needed for a good show, a show producer who really knows how to put on events and in an affluent area, yet I hear disappointing results. Where's the magic bullet?

I wish I knew Connie.  New/young shows are tough to get going, established shows have a reputation going for them, that's why they're successful.  People tend to wait for the reputable show to buy their artwork so they can say "oh, I bought that at the 'such-and-such' show", it's like bragging  rights.  If you think about it, saying I bought that piece at the Canton Museum National Art Show sounds pretty impressive, maybe that's why it's having a good start.  I guess it's how you present the show and your target audience, but with the economy the way it is, any new show is going to have quite a hill to climb to make it.....but isn't that how every show started?  Is there any show out there that's had instant success?
