Booth Picture Tip

Booth Picture Tip

I've spend the better part of the past year writing about booth pictures. The article which ran in Sunshine Artist Magazine was reproduced here and on the ZAPP web site. If you haven't read it yet, here's a link:
http://bermangraphics.com/blog/photograph-your-booth/

I just ran into an unusual situation yesterday when contacted by an artist who had hired a non jury oriented professional photographer to photograph her booth. When the shoot was happening, the photographer had refused the artist's request to give me a call to go over the images and make suggestions. He had shot the booth standing on a step stool because he thought it would make a better angle. Because of the camera height, there was too much of the front of the canopy top showing and nothing of the interior of the top. That in itself wasn't so bad. The problem was that the artist uses a Craft Hut and now the booth picture looks like the artist was hiding the fact that she is using a pop up canopy.

The only way to let the jurors know you're not using a pop up tent is to let them see the interior of the top in your booth picture.

  • I've thought about getting the pipe fittings to replace the scissor joints of the EZ-Up frame. I've located flat corners, splices, and a peak connector, but no joy in finding a corner with a 45 degree bisector with enough rise to match the EZ-Up peak. it's looking like maybe $200-250 including conduit pipe. I saw a tent like that about 10-12 years ago, but can't recall who made it. Didn't make much difference as they were a few spaces away from me and a severe thunderstorm trashed it badly. My EZ-Up that was braced and weighted rode the storm out with aplomb ;-)

  • The problem is with a few shows not allowing artists to apply with their current booth picture and then having them rent a sturdier canopy if accepted into the show. I think that's what Columbus and Des Moines does. They shouldn't be so narrow minded.

Maybe if you add a description to your booth picture that you're willing to rent a sturdier tent if the show asks you to. I would definitely call any shows where that question might arise.

  • while I understand these shows wanting our canopy to be safe, it definitely will cause someone like myself to NOT apply.  Between the cost of the booth space and then additional cost for a new canopy I will pass.  I have weathered some horrible storms in my King Canopy with weights and straps.  I really do understand the safety aspect, but for those of us coming up the ranks there needs to be some type of other option.

  • From what I understand about corner tents is that most juries do not want a booth shot of a corner display...but instead require a booth shot with 2 sides and a back

  • That was not the picture I meant to send.  The Native American items will not be in the new photo and I have some wood crates to add height to the display along the back.  The problem is I live in New Hampshire. We have snow on the ground and I need photos before Jan 2015.  Many shows I want to apply to have Jan deadlines.

  • Have you looked at Richard Sherer's booth picture he posted. He set up a really clean looking leather booth for the jury picture:

  • 981297464?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024I am not sure if you can see the whole photo.  This is not a picture I plan to use it was taken inside my barn.  I hope to take some outside, and I have some new display items.  Some of the inventory shown is not suitable for higher end shows and will not be displayed in the new photos I hope to take.

  • Make your booth look like it would look at a show but not so full that it looks cluttered. I can evaluate your image(s) if you email them to me.

  • I found this article very helpful.  I need to take new booth photos.  I sell handmade leather items, so I do use tables.  I just purchased some new display items to make my booth look more professional.  I noticed in the article the photo of the booth with clothing, didn't have much product in it.  Should you fill the booth up for the photo or just use some merchandise so they see the general idea?

  • I am just getting so tired of all this you can't have, you must have, etc.  I have had a King Canopy for several years and it has done me extremely well in regards to staying the course during rains or wind.  Others have not and were  seen in piles as twisted metal.  The difference?  Weights, or 36" re-bar in the shows that allow it.  Last year I was refused La Quinta.  I asked why and was told that it was not my work but my booth, the grids were not up to the standards of my 'peers'.  So I bought ProPanels which I could ill afford.  This year I was again rejected after buying the panels, hanging the paintings like a 'gallery' and putting my stuff in the categories they suggested, etc.  I refuse to buy a new tent of any kind.  They all can have their festivals indoors as far as I am concerned and provide panels of their choice if they want everything uniform.  I find it is the jury of my 'peers' that judges harshly.  Not your work but will the look of your tent interfere with their sales......
