WHAT

Artists know which art fairs are their favorites (and there are lists to prove it) but art collectors also have their favorites and those important people in this process have never been surveyed.

You've met them at show after show, they are looking for that next great show or that next great artist, so we want to know:

What show do you think they should not miss?

HOW

This is a 2 round process:
  • In Round 1 we want you to tell us what shows should be included in the final ballot.

  • In Round 2 voters will choose the Top 25 Shows in the country, as well as top regional shows plus other criteria.
Nominate your favorite show with our quick and easy survey. Click this link:

WHEN

Nominations for "Best" open
September 20
Deadline for nominations
September 30

P. S. In early October we'll send out the official survey ballot. So if there is a show you want to make sure is on the ballot nominate it now AND share this article.

P.P.S. Why you should participate: we are working to help art fairs make their events better so you can make a living … If shows compete to be the best, improve sales, bring in more qualified buyers and measure themselves against the best, that is good for you and all artists. Our mission: keep these shows striving to become better so YOU can earn a living. You’ve chosen this profession, we hope to help you along so you can make $$$. Promoting the best shows is good for all of us.

  • We closed the nominations last night for shows to be included in the survey. We had an excellent response:

Now I'm tabulating those results to make the official survey live online on October 11. Thanks for the votes.

  • Shadows on the Teche, New Iberia, LA

Poche Arts and Crafts Show, Convent, LA

  • Right, if I don't know about them, if no one nominates them they won't make the list. I do want it to be inclusive, but if no one from your region nominates them, nothing happens. I know about a lot of shows, but I know there are a bunch of smaller "under the radar" shows that people love. I need to know about them. Like Cindy, if you can't get through the first part of the survey because you don't know about those shows, please tell me here. I AM listening. I want this to be a nationwide survey recognizing not only the big fancy festivals but the other places where people go to buy art.

and here's the other thing, Cindy. In the actual survey (in your mailboxes on 10/11) it specifically says to please  only vote on questions where you have actual knowledge of the shows.

  • Three Rivers, Covington, Louisiana

  • I think the ones y'all suggested are good, though I have not been to any of them.  I have been to good shows but they are smaller than those, at least in popularity outside of Louisiana.  I suppose I'll just pass on voting this time because as I said, I want to vote on shows I have actually experienced in some way.  Thanks anyway.

  • I would think there could be a few more from Louisiana on the list as well, like Red River Revel and Covington Three Rivers. I've never been to either, nor have I been to JazzFest as an artist or art patron (saw Stevie Ray Vaughan in May 1990 and then he crashed and died in August.) I've heard great reports from fellow artist friends about JazzFest and Covington.

The list is probably based upon nominations from artist folk like you and me, Cindy. I'm sure Connie has her faves, and maybe some of the others here on AFI who aren't artists have suggested shows that made it on the list. So suggest away and maybe the shows you recommend will get on the list. But if they don't get enough votes during voting time, they're likely to fall off the list. Isn't that how this works, Connie?

  • That is an interesting comment, Cindy. I'd not thought of that. Do you have a suggestion so I could make the survey more inclusive? (I do think the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival is on the list, at least one for Louisiana)

  • Alrighty.  I had an issue filling out the survey.  I have never been to any of the shows listed.  Therefore I felt I could not vote for any in good conscience .... no first hand knowledge.  My shows have been limited to Louisiana.  None from Louisiana were listed.  I am sure you had to cut the list somewhere.  Anyway, I did not get to complete the survey since I would not place a vote in the very first question.  Surely there is a way to fix this for the next time.  I would like to know that those who are voting have at least attended the shows in question as a customer, if not an artist/crafter.  TIA

  • Thanks, Barrie, for letting me know about that glitch and for being resourceful to work around it. Fixed now.

Thanks for your vote. We sent out the initial email on Sunday morning and the entries have been coming in strongly! There are some sweet shows out there that can use the recognition. Remember folks, this isn't about the show making money, it is about marketing the events to the buying public to encourage them to attend the events, in essence, art fair tourism.

  • I added to the list Fine Arts for Ocala - Ocala Arts Festival.
