This has absolutely nothing to do with art shows directly but it might be helpful if you own an iPhone, or use iTunes or iPhoto to back up your phones contents!

I upgraded to Apple's newest entry into the iOS family with the system upgrade 10.0.2. I couldn't stand it when I upgraded to iOS 7 but I learned to live with it. A new low has been achieved with the iOS 10.0.2 and its need for redundant pressing of the home button just to get off the screen with the day and date, as-well-as other clumsly "upgrades". But I digress needlessly.

I wanted to backup the photos that I had on my phone to iPhoto, because they have the GPS data that my super expensive and needlessly complex new camera doesn't give me, and kept getting the message:

photos in the camera roll cannot be imported because the device "device name" is locked with a passcode

and iTunes kept saying that it didn't recognize my device, even though every time when asked if the device was trusted I touched the "trust" choice on the phone. I was caught in an Apple loop from which I didn't know how to escape.

I had a lengthy discussion with Apple "Chat" and somewhere in the midst (mist?) of the conversation, it was suggested that I update iTunes. More conversation...App store not available...yada yada, finally got the updated version of iTunes downloaded and installed and Viola! like magic the iPhone was recognized by both iTunes and iPhoto. That hadn't been a problem previously with other iPhone updates so I had no prior experiences from which to gather that I had to update iTunes as well! It must be rigged!

  • My i-phone is an i-phone 4.

  • Barry, you make me feel like a genius instead of a Luddite. I'm still using Adobe CS3 rather than upgrading because I don't trust the Cloud. I prefer things under my own hard-wired control. I suggested Connie reinstall the old system for that reason. My old horses (desktop/tower Macs) died under me but the iMac still runs CS3 just fine. I have an i-phone in good health with its phone jack that works with PayPal. I will take good care of these.

  • a phone? Imagine that. I have unlimited calling on my phone (seems like I do anyway, hours and hours of minutes waiting to be used) but I have a large house and can't use my data upstairs or in the back of the house, so I get charge overages for using the data. I know there are such things as extenders, but bought one and couldn't figure out how to make it work, so it is sitting there beside me looking at me. Tech is my idea of hell.

Very cool of Adobe, Joel. A monthly fee is someone else's idea of heaven.

  • 1) Apple must have hired their programers from Microsoft. 2) Making everyone buy the new Quickbooks is unconscionable in my estimation. Maybe if your version was 5 years old but the 2013 version? 3) The only thing Apple that I have is my I-phone. I, too, hate the fact that you now have to push down on the start button to get into the phone. Half the time I take too long and Sirri comes up. I never use Sirri and I never use the Apple cloud. I'm, also, not a big fan of the latest I-phone because they have eliminated to headphone jack which means we have to get one of those devices from "Square" that has to be fully charged to use. I like having that phone jack. I probably will get an Android phone the next time I need one.

Maybe there is a reason why all professional sports teams use the Surface pro instead of Macs. Anyway, I've never had a mac and probably never will.

Here's a tip for those of you who use your I-phone as a media device: I used to load my phone with audiobooks and podcasts to listen to on drives to shows. I bought a Windows based phone and installed a flash drive on it for storage. You can't do that with a I-phone. I never activated the phone. Nobody ever buys a phone with a Windows operating system so they go for really cheap. I paid $30 for one with a 5" screen. I load it with audiobooks and music. I don't need I-tunes clumsy system to load things on it. Just copy and paste from my computer. It comes with wifi, which means I can access the internet or watch TV. Consequently, I don't use any of the I-phone only apps that I can't stand like I-tunes, safari, etc. I still use it for email, gps, and all the things that I can only get through the Verizon network. It's hard to get a wifi connection driving down the road. I, actually, use the I-phone as a phone. How about that?

  • Yeah, I learned during a software update that all my graphics programs were not compatible with the new software. I could either buy a whole new set of software or go backwards and reinstall the old system. I went backwards until that laptop died.

I was a graphic designer for 25 years, before that company closed down and I decided to do art full time. During that time with all the software "upgrades," the Adobe company finally found their golden goose. No more hard installs. Just "cloud based" programs. So if you don't pay your never-ever-to-end monthly fees, *POOF* the software doesn't work.

  • My brother used to be on a "help Desk" for a certain unnamed phone company. He hated the job as its primary concern was signing people up for more services! The only way he could justify and rationalize his position was that he felt, at times, he was helping people with legitimate issues. He lost that job, not due to performance issues (LOL), and couldn't have been happier!

  • Okay, after nearly two hours I got someone to answer the simple question "how do I restore my Quickbooks for Mac 2013? And if not restorable, how can I access those files to go forward?" Honestly, does seem someone should be able this question. I'm not sure if I was not being clear enough but just kept getting handed along to the next person who, I was assured, was the one who could help me.

Anyway, the answer is purchase "Quickbooks for Mac 2016", install and the two programs will integrate. It worked. Sighing with relief. However, the first person I talked to on Monday initiated and signed me up for "Quickbooks Online", which would mean starting fresh. Getting "unsigned up" for that took 45 minutes! I just wanted to cancel it.

This is me venting, of course, but also forewarning any reader to be ware of support at Intuit.

  • Seems to me, once you re-save items created since your "upgrade," you can try to reinstall the old operating system. The Apple help forums should have instructions for this. Then you should see all your previous files, backups under the previous system, etc.

  • Connie, so sorry for your loss...of data! Moral of the story, before ANY upgrade, backup, backup, backup. The last time I updated my Operating System to Mavericks everything went kerfluie. My screen would flicker, boxes were flying everywhere. Turns out I needed a new video card to go with the update on the OS. Fortunately, I had backed up my whole system before hand and was able to return to my old OS until I updated my hardware.

Computer IT people like to use the analogy of hanging on to an old car, sure it runs, but it may not have all the new stuff...Technology has the new built in obsolescence!

  • A couple of weeks ago I had the same issue with itunes not recognizing my iphone or ipad anymore. i called apple support and they walked me through the proces of deleteing itunes and downloading it again... and the problem was sloved.

I have occasionally had problems with different software programs that required a download that easily solved the problem. Sometimes just re-booting the computer will take care of some problems...and I always try that first before re-downloading.
