A Message To The Art Show Thief

The best compliment you can give me is to pay me for my art not steal it. I am flattered that you were so enamored with my painting. However you are not Thomas Crown just as I am not Monet. I am a living, breathing artist who makes his living from my talent selling my oil paintings.

I have a suspicion I know who you are but I am not positive therefore I did not go to the trouble of reporting the theft. I thought long and hard about reporting the theft to the police as I sat in the rain on Sat during the show. As the rain fell no customers came out and the weather became worse. Therefore the show was canceled and I lost my booth fee, hotel expense, travel expense etc. So to make matters worse I lost more than just the painting.

I do thank you for zipping my tent wall back down the way I had it so the other paintings I had hanging on that outside wall did not get destroyed by the rain. You get to enjoy the painting hanging on your wall while I continue to paint more and hopefully I can make up for the lost revenue and the feeling of security when I leave my art overnight at shows in the future.

Keep this in mind you low life scum! The talented artist you see at the art festivals in towns around the country have a passion to create and are people who pour their passion into the work they create. We are not wealthy we are talented men and women who choose to live life on our terms. The artists I have meet through the years are not selfish people. We do not take from others rather we create to share our vision and talent with people who appreciate our talents. We sell our unique works so that we can continue to create more. We work hard there is no steady pay check, we sell our work to pay our bills, feed our family and provide shelter so we can continue to live our dream!

My guess is you have a job and have bills to pay. How would you feel if you worked hard then your employer complimented you for your hard work but did not pay you for your effort?  Enjoy the painting you have my website address from the back of the painting so you can probably find the address to my studio if you want to steal more. I promise you if I am in the studio when you come to add to your collection I won’t call the police! I am an artist who is a strong supporter of the 2nd amendment.

  • Some years ago when we used the "nuckle buster" not sure how to write this word,

a man payed with a credit card and showed his ID, same name but I instantly knew this could not be him.I let him sign, as soon as he went on, I informed my neighbor to get the show promoter NOW, she came very quick and I told her what just happened.

She called the police instantly with her cell phone and less than 3 minutes later 2 police cars where there, I spotted the guy in another booth, made visual contact with one of the cubs and we both started running in his direction and 1 minute later he was hand cuffed.

Another police officer than came into my booth and we did all the paperwork in my booth.

Next day a Sunday the officer who hand cuffed the guy came to see me at the show and told me that he did stole the credit card and ID and thanked me and the promoter for our help.

So you don't have to leave your booth to report, call the police and they will come to you into your booth for the paperwork and do it quick, you might get your art back, as I got my art back.

  • Appalling...

  • If you have a photo of the painting, try sharing it on local social media pages.
  • Really sorry to hear about this happening to you.  What a sleaze to have stolen from you, and I hope that his/her Karma is proportionally damaged!

  • I have done a least two shows that I can remember where there was theft, it was reported to the promoter, and the promoter had printed notices handed to the rest of us as warnings, or went through the show warning everyone verbally.

I'm sorry this happened to you.

  • I understand your need to vent about being robbed. THIS IS FOR EVERYONE: 1. If you are the victim of theft, notify show management ASAP. They can alert their security people and volunteers. 2. Tell your neighbors and pass the word along to other artists.

I did the Labor Day show in Manitou Springs, CO several years ago and had a $400 hand engraved silver money clip stolen. I told show management but they were all in a dither about not wanting other artists “to know their show attracted shoplifters”. They told me I could file a police report – sure, I’m out $400 and I am going to shut down my booth for a couple hours and loose sales.  We passed the word by mouth to other artists.  Needless to say, That was the last time I did that show. The last couple years they have been flooded out and have had to relocate the show. Just rewards IMO.

  • You tell em Michael!

  •  Which show?  Perhaps some pressure on the show promoter from several artists would generate support.  Security is something that I ask about before I submit an entry to any show. I would gladly voice my concern about their security and this incident to this show promoter. They may not be liable (usual disclaimers assumed) but incidents like this should be a paramount concern to them. Report it and who you suspect. You should not be liable for any legal repercussions as long as you do not accuse - just "suspect".  My wife worked for the DA for many years - not sure about sufficient probable cause but just questioning would bring some discomfort to him.  If he is not a client or a collector or a friend of one - rattle the sabre.

That said, I particularly like the reference to the 2nd amendment.

  • please send this to the local newspaper of this show plus its promoter

  • eloquently written.. so sorry this happened to you.
