Art Fair Insiders

Call for Artists, Making Money at Juried Art Fairs, Craft Shows and Festivals

The entrepreneurial life of an artist requires continuous learning and experimenting and we need to stay on top of what else is going on out there in the arts and put our own careers in perspective.

My friend, Richard Rothbard, just sent me this link to Fine Art Magazine. Want to know what the BIG "real" art fairs are doing? Who is buying art and what kind of art is being celebrated?

This amazing website opens up like a magazine and you can page through it and read the articles about high society and who is buying what and see the work of up and coming artists, as well as establishment figures.

Really worth a look: http://issuu.com/fineartmagazine/docs/fine-art-magazine-winter-2012...

Plus, there is an article about Richard and Joanna Rothbard, their galleries and their shows and how they have developed markets for people who do the street art fairs.

Has anyone here attended these big glossy events or participated in them? Do you see them as a goal or inspiration to market/work/innovate/grow?

and, I've been reading a very cool book by Matt Mason, Pirate's Dilemma, about "piracy" of all kinds, including graffiti and street art. In Miami this week all the glitterati are gathering to attend and purchase what the art world legitimizes as "real art" -- with huge crowds and all the fancy people in attendance to purchase and "collect." Then I just came across this article about the street artist Banksy whose work has been chopped off walls to be exhibited and sold at this event. I found it fascinating: http://www.woostercollective.com/post/the-banksy-exhibition-we-wont...

and maybe you will also.

Interested in more about Art Miami? -- here is an excerpt from Tom Wolfe's new book Back to Blood in Vanity Fair, "The Running of the Billionaires." It is both very funny and horrifying.

Connie do you have Netflix?  You should watch Exit Through The Gift Shop.

Nope. We have all the premium channels (it seems) as my husband loved movies, but I'll be on the lookout for this. Sounds familiar.

It starts out as a documentary on Banksy but turns into one about Mr. Brainwash.

Sounds very interesting. Last year I saw a fabulously interesting graffiti show at the Los Angeles MOCA, just full of wonderful art including all the famous graffiti artists. This was so "not" Art Basel Miami.

Who is Mr. Brainwash? Is he the guy artists sell out to? ;)

Got to watch:)  But Gallery Girls did run his show at Basel last year.

I am never in town for Art Basel and I am starting to regret it.  As  more galleries open up in the art district, the shows become more accessible to other collectors and people in general than the main parts of Basel.

Geri, you need to attend and report back. This is an entirely new game from what we are doing.

Melanie, are you saying that Banksy was represented at Basel? Pieces off the streets?

And while we're feeling so superior because of the down to earth nature of our street art fairs I just came across another hilarious article in Slate about this Art Basel Miami: Why the Art World is so Loathsome "a vapid hell-hole of investment-crazed pretentiousness"

Love it! Me, feeling superior ...

No, Mr Brainwash did.  I would love to go to a Banksy "Secret" art show though.
