BENISH MININBERG, PAINTER

Benish was born in Jaffa, Israel in 1902 to Judah and Leiba Mininberg, who made ALIAH in 1900 from KREMNCHOG, Ukraine. The couple gave birth to 7 children. Benish was second son. The meaning of BENISH is BEN NESS.
Benish grew up in Neve Shalom, Tel Aviv. His father painted houses and decorated walls in the new neighborhoods of Tel Aviv. Benish went to ALLIANCE School in NEVE TZEDEK but had to stop studying after 4th grade in order to help him at work.
In Soskin’s famous photograph, 1908, (the gathering of the land owners of TEL AVIV sands) you can see the boy Benish standing on a hill with other children.
At the end of WWI and the arrival of the British forces in Israel, Benish was sent to study at BEZALEL, the famous art academy in Jerusalem.
At the beginning of the 20’s Benish stated making wall paintings in resident houses in Tel Aviv. You can find an advertisement for his work in the journal ‘HAMELACHA’ (‘The Work’) which was published during the years 1922 and 1923, under the headline ‘Painting rooms in the latest European fashion’.
A few documents that were left as part of Benish's inheritance, give evidence to paintings which were done in 1925 for the British governance in HEBRON.
In 1929 the Mininberg family took part in the well-known fair ‘YARID HA MIZRACH’ where it exhibited its products and won the second prize, a silver medal. ‘The Institute for Israeli Art by Mininberg & Sons’ was located in the family residence area, on 22nd SHEINKIN St., Tel Aviv, in a separate hut. The family owned another store on NACHALAT BENJAMIN St.
In 1931 Benish married ROZY SPINGLER. Two sons were born, Abraham and Uri. At that time the family lived on SHEINKIN St. and latter moved to 21 JOCHANAN HA SANDLAR St.
In 1934 there was no more clientele for the family business so Benish had to change occupation and start coloring furniture, mainly stylish metal furniture, for the company ‘Schlechter & Friedman’.
In 1938 Benish moved to Beirut with his family. He worked for a metal furniture company owned by Israel Hananyah. The company had many branches in the Middle East. He was assigned to be the company foreman and the head of the decorative coloring for that company.
Benish was also sent to Damascus and Turkey for the same work – he was occupied there for short periods of time. According to his grandson, there is evidence that Benish did work at the Ata Turk Palace in Ankara.
In 1939 Benish returned to Israel with his family. He was then sent to Egypt as the professional representative of the company ‘TZEVA’, known today as TAMBUR PAINTS Company.
After the establishment of the State of Israel, Benish became a full-time painter and sold his works. His eldest son, Abraham joined him. Together they moved to RAMAT-GAN where they opened a picture framing store and an art atelier, which were located in different places.
In 1948, Benish designed an ideograph for the Israeli Air Force as part of a contest. His design won the first prize and became the first badge worn on the soldier’s beret. The badge was later replaced with the one used till current days.
In 1958, Benish went to the US where he exhibited his paintings at ‘The NY Graphical Institute’.
Benish died in 1996, at the age of 94. His inheritance consists of hundreds of oil paintings which are owned now by his family. Some works are at the hands of collectors.
Benish was not a well known artist in Israel. Maybe because he was not part of any painter's society group and never made the effort to publish himself. However his work is worth looking into at further depth.
