My wive and I are vending at an outdoor event that has 12'x12' provided tents, so our standard 10 x 10 is getting modified.  We've never had a need for one, but could use some suggestions for a…Continue

Google Alerts is great.  It keeps you from having to do all the looking.  You put in what you want to keep track of and they will send any info on to you.  Try it. Jacki B

Sign up for Google Alerts ( www.google.com/alerts ).  This is an easy way to keep track of what is being said about you and your company on the internet.  This is also a great way to see what is being said by reviewers.  There…

We're registered which works just as well to prove date of creation.  It also doesn't help overseas.

Have you trademarked your name? You can do it yourself with out an attorney. It took me 1 1/2 years for this to go through, but I finally got it. This only protects me in the US. From what I understand, I will need to pay a lot more to protect it in…

Very sound advise! I searched before I started using the name, and about once annually since, just to check on things.  Will continue, as I don't want any legal issues happening.

Keeping your company name and reputation in a globalized economy . . .

I haven't put anything up for a while, but this morning's events got me going.  It started with an email from a lady in the UK wanting to know where her Amazon order for two bowler hats was.  At first I thought it was a phishing attempt, but I decided to reply stating that we'd never sold on Amazon, only through our own website and that my wife doesn't make men's hats.  She replied that 'there must be more than one AB Hats' and thanked me for the note. That got my interest - when I Googled "ab…See More

I have been using the square since January & LOVE it.  SQUARE has huge integrity.  In the beginning I flubbed a customer's email so they did not receive an electronic receipt.  I contacted Square customer service  &…

Since Square doesn't include the account number in the text message, how is this an issue for us?

Couple of comments and then I'm dropping it all.  First, what they're doing is sending some amount of undisclosed information TO YOUR CARRIER each time you use a smart phone (iPhones included).  This means Square may (or may not)…

I totally agree with Gary.  I was sick and tired of having to take the PCI compliance tests or pay a whopping fee for not doing so with my previous merchant account.  Square is much safer, there are no paper receipts to store, destroy or…

if it gets too much like "1984", I'll be going back to an unsmart phone and using cash only.  Maybe barter. :-)

Walt consider the source.  PCI compliance is the rule of the industry.  Any device that 'stores' customer data needs to be compliant.  Square stores nothing on the phone at anytime.  Once it is transmitted there…

Actually, the question would be: Do you trust the network that the data is being transmitted through?  The mechanism for swiping CC's is the same whether it's "The Square" or any of the wireless CC machines that people use…

Alison Thomas commented on Walt Bennett's blog post 'Don't know for certain, but this could affect Square!'
The only information I was able to find was that the Square translates the cc information into sound in order for the phone to accept it and transmit it and someone could write an application on their own phone to translate that sound back into the…

Walt - why don't you keep your eye on this and report back when you have some concrete information that says that credit card data is being compromised by using the Square.  Until then......

First show ever
I'd rather not remember - it was that much of a disaster!
What is your website?
http://www.abhats.com
What are the best things about art fairs
The ones that are well managed, well laid out, and helpful for first-time vendors.
Best show ever and why
The first Richmond National Folk Festival - weather was bad one day, set-up and take down were not easy, but sales were stupendous.
Worst show ever and why
2006 Celebrate Fairfax, Fairfax, VA. Terrible layout for artisans/crafters resulted in next to no traffic for any of us (everyone went to the rides, music and commercial vendors), poor judging, over 12 hour days (3 1/2 days long), and county police insisting ALL attendees be out before we could bring in vehicles. Only positive aspect was the county employee volunteers who were friendly and helpful, but couldn't do much else.
Who referred you to ArtFairInsiders.com? Please be specific.
Have never left one once setting up.

Don't know for certain, but this could affect Square!

This has been out for a few days, but I just found some of the details.  Reason I'm posting this is that we've been using a 'dial-pay' merchant account for years, but NOT on a smart phone.  We've been planning on getting one and moving to Square - which is certainly more cost effective save for the data charges.  Best I can figure we'll save a bit, but it'll be much more convenient.

My bio includes over fifty years in IT and data communications, so this article kind of waves a red…

Looks like this season could be a 'lost' one!

Sometimes things just happen and your left with no way to commit to shows when they want money six months out.  My wife and I have two different mediums and both of us have a reasonable amount of inventory - not great, but workable.  Day after Christmas, we found water leaking through the ceiling in our kitchen pantry.  This became a completely unbudgeted total bathroom renovation (that means I'm doing most of it!).  Just before Christmas, my wife began experiencing hip pains that have become… Continue

One of the two wood turning clubs I belong to likes to have booths at local events to promote the club. This was their second time at this two day one nearby that was held near a somewhat rural town about ten miles from the club's 'home', a moderate sized city in the Mid-Atlantic area. (I really don't want to be more specific than this.)

This 'craft' event had about sixty five 'vendors'. At least five or six were commercial or political. Another ten were obvious buy/sell, with another… Continue

Welcome, Walt! Such a pleasure to find all of you folks from Virginia joining us.

I'll have to tell you I was plenty confused when I started approving the photos -- hats, okay, then suddenly wood turnings! Does this person have multiple personalities? Then I came to your page here and I'm a little mollified :)
