"Good luck with the show. I hope it is successful for you and your dad. If I'm back from the UP in time, I will definitely make an attempt to get to Chesaning for the show. Would love to meet someone from AFI."

Terri Drake commented on Nels Johnson's blog post HOW TO WRITE AN INTERESTING BLOG--and not necessarily be witty about it
"Nels, thanks for the giggles and grins with your post on HOW to blog/post. LOL. I thoroughly enjoyed reading each and every response. I never know exactly what I'm going to write until my fingers start moving. In my case, having the fingers…"

Ruth Finkenbiner commented on Terri Drake's blog post Why aren't I selling?
"Just my .02 cents here, no one on vacation wants to deal with a disgruntled artists. So, make sure even if you're doing 3, 5, or 7 shows in a row that you have a little down time, even when there's s afull time job or lots of restocking to…"

Colette A. Zilka commented on Terri Drake's blog post Why aren't I selling?
"I comepletly agree that you will sell your stuff better if you project a happy positive image and engage the public as it walks by.   This summer, I did 5 shows in a row while working during the week.  I do not reccomend that!  As the…"

Terri Drake commented on Nels Johnson's blog post GREAT GULF COAST ART FESTIVAL--PENSACOLA,FL--not quite as good as last year, but it was still a money-maker
"Nels, I had to tell you how much I thoroughly enjoyed reading your post. The wit and humor while providing an interesting review made for a very enjoyable down to earth read. Kudos to you! Gee, I never even noticed that y'all misspelled…"

Robin Aronson commented on Terri Drake's blog post Why aren't I selling?
"I agree with Debra.  My best many-times-repeat customer did not buy anything from me the first year she came to my booth, but we had a nice conversation, and my work apparently made enough of an impression on her that she thought about it…"

Terri Drake commented on steve appel's blog post need an opinion

Terri Drake commented on Terri Drake's blog post WOW, thanks for the feedback!
"Warren, if I had something to sell with a $2000 price tag and someone came with cash, or credit card, in hand to purchase it, I would be in such a state of euphoria that I probably wouldn't remember them being in my booth either! LOL. The…"

Warren Townsend commented on Terri Drake's blog post WOW, thanks for the feedback!
"Terri I am very proud of you for having such a good show.  Seems like you have the knack, kudos to you.  But reading through out your post you keep referring to the other "vendors".  I am a metal artist and I go to art…"

Michael Reimer commented on Terri Drake's blog post WOW, thanks for the feedback!
"Terri - no worries, I didn't think you were picking on me.  My comment was based on my apparent misinterpretation of 'came by' - I assumed you meant 'walked by' (which is why I was curious of attendance) and I think you…"

WOW, thanks for the feedback!

When I posted my blog piece "Why aren't I selling?" I did not expect the response that I received. All I can say is WOW! I just finished reading each and everyone of them and appreciate the various comments, opinions and thoughtful insights that others have on the subject.Michael R. made the remark "... sold to 4 out of every 10 that stopped by? Really?" To that I have to respond, "Yes, really," however, when I gave that figure, I did not say whether or not the individual had gone by my booth…See More

Connie Mettler commented on Terri Drake's blog post Why aren't I selling?
"The thing is, you've spent a lot of money getting to be in that show, besides the booth fee there is all your equipment, motel, food, time, materials, etc. How many times a year will you get a chance to make a return on it? Did you spend all…"

Debra Parker Romero commented on Terri Drake's blog post Why aren't I selling?
"Even if the customer dosen't buy from you this year. He or she will leave with a positive feeling about your work and possibly come back to buy. It never hurts to have a good attitude and enjoy yourself while you are there. If they are not…"

Deb Kik commented on Terri Drake's blog post Why aren't I selling?

Annette Piper commented on Terri Drake's blog post Why aren't I selling?

Years in the Art Fair Business
Just starting out - am a new business in the arts
First show ever
Great Lakes Lighthouse Festival - did photos of participants for donations to Lighthouse Museum
What are the best things about art fairs
Chance to network, meet new people and see what seems to sell and what doesn't and why.
Best show ever and why
Great Lakes Lighthouse Festival - all kinds of artisans attended, most geared to nautical or lighthouses but lots had wide variety to offer. Great people/community pulling together and it was in its 15th year.
Worst show ever and why
Quilt/Fiber show in Phoenix, AZ - not a lot of quilts or artisans, mostly trade people pushing people to buy and majority not geared to quilters or fiber artist, i.e., selling vacuum cleaners, rugs, etc. and had tiny area geared to selling of fiber artist materials, fabric and/or quilts and patterns.
Who referred you to ArtFairInsiders.com? Please be specific.
Over crowding. Was a quilt/craft show held in a tiny church and only 6-8 people could be in the room at any given time. Room had no circulation so became unbearably hot to point where I almost passed out.

Why aren't I selling?

Posted on October 28, 2011 at 12:13pm 16 Comments

Although I don't have a lot of vending/exhibiting experience under my belt, I was amazed when a "seasoned" exhibitor stopped at my booth at the recent Great Lakes Lighthouse Festival and lamated that he wasn't selling anything and people just seemed to pass by his booth. He couldn't figure out what was wrong. I told him I would have to get back to him on that one as I needed some time to gather my thoughts. Actually, I didn't want to hurt his feelings or make him angry with my response so I…

Great Lakes Lighthouse Festival - A good Time Had by All!

Posted on October 9, 2011 at 4:53pm 6 Comments

The 16th Annual Great Lakes Lighthouse Festival is now a sweet, and tiring, memory. It was held in Alpena, Michigan from October 6-9. The main event was held at the APlex in Alpena and there were artistisans, authors, a homemade sausage vendor, entertainers such as Carl Bearinger who sang about the Great Lakes and the wonderful lighthouses, there were satellite events at all the Lighthouses found in Northern Michigan from Mackinac to Tawas to Presque Isle. The weather was absolutely…

Quick Howdy

Posted on July 8, 2011 at 8:56pm 0 Comments

It's been a while since I've posted anything and that is due to be extremely busy. Have participated in a few retreats with a basket guild, doing photography ops and working on some fiber art. A lot of my time was taken up with proofing and approving a book that I have written. It has been released and I guess I'll be busy with the promotion of it. It's nothing earth shattering, but does get my foot in the door in the world of writers and it has been an interesting journey.

Just a…

That would be wonderful. Tell me what I need to have to get started. Perhaps when the weather lightens up a bit, we could get together. Would love to meet you face to face, as well as figure out where I know you from . I'm not in Ossineke proper, but between there and Alpena - I'm approx. 8-10 miles south of Alpena and about 2-3 miles North of Ossineke proper. Send me a private email to oneshawman@aol.com and I'll email you my phone number, would love to chat with you. Thanks and looking forward to meeting you sometime.
