Looking for critique of my booth shot

Hi All,  I have yet to qualify for a "real" art show - have only done arts and crafts type venues.  I just bought a tent last year, and now am trying to improve my booth shot.  I read all of Larry's…Continue

Does size matter? (with regard to artwork!!!)

I am a newer artist, just trying to get into some mid-level art shows this year.  I've been researching how to improve my booth shots by looking at other artists' examples, and one thing that struck…Continue

Opinion on framing and suggestions for supplier of inexpensive frames?

Started this discussion. Last reply by Chris Fedderson Feb 19. 7 Replies

I am rather new to showing, and have been framing my work in a variety of frames purchased from Michael's Craft stores, JoAnn's, Hobby Lobby, and what have you.  Buying each frame individually, and…Continue

"Sounds like a busy weekend for you, Cindy!  It's always tough when a great supplier suddenly leaves - never seems to be good alternatives to take their place.  I just finished up a watercolor for a show I'm doing Sunday.…"

"Hi Kristy,  I had to laugh reading your review - I am also new to this, and it sounded like almost everyone of the few shows I have done so far!  Lots of compliments, kids love my animal paintings, the weather is either too hot, too wet,…"

"Hi Judy!  While there really was no cool place, yes the larger tents definitely were better.  I was in the South tent, and somewhat near the entrance, which also helped.  Artists further back in the big tents did have it worse than…"

Boston Mills Artfest 2018 from a newbie perspective

While I was initially rejected from the Boston Mills show, I received a call off the waitlist the day of the show!  I wasn't really surprised by my initial rejection, as my booth shot for the application was ridiculously awful (see first attached photo for a laugh; second photo was my booth at the show).  But I was so excited to be invited even at the last minute, and jumped at the chance.  It helped that the venue was only a half hour's drive from my home, and luckily I had recently upgraded…See More

Sonja Jones replied to Larry Sohn's discussion Painters source and disdain
"I think maybe some of the disdain from using photos might be if you are using someone else's photo.  A photographer is an artist, who puts their creativity into composing their shot.  If you then create a painting from that shot…"

Teresa Porter replied to Sonja Jones's discussion Looking for critique of my booth shot

Sonja Jones replied to Sonja Jones's discussion Looking for critique of my booth shot
"Thank you, Fletch!  I like the table and print bin idea - I agree that my tent looks too empty.  I do sell matted and bagged prints, but didn't think to place them in the bin for the booth shot.  And yes, getting enough stock is…"

Larry Berman replied to Sonja Jones's discussion Looking for critique of my booth shot

Larry Sohn replied to Sonja Jones's discussion Looking for critique of my booth shot

What are the best things about art fairs
Validation of my artwork.
Best show ever and why
So far, the second time I did the Gingerbread House Art and Craft show. After a year of showing, I learned a bit about shows and marketing, and I had my highest sales to date.
Worst show ever and why
The Chagrin Falls Avant-garde show was my worst. The booth fee was high for me at the time, and I didn't sell a single item. Bad weather kept the crowd size down, but I don't know if I would've done better even so.

St. Louis Art Fair Mock Jury 2018

Posted on February 5, 2018 at 2:03pm 4 Comments

Hi All!

I recently participated in the St. Louis Mock Jury this past January.  Even though I was unable to attend in person, I participated through their webinar.  As a newbie, I found quite a few take-aways from this experience. Even though I didn't really have a booth shot to submit, the biggest tips for me were on my future booth shots.  Don't overcrowd your booth with too much artwork, make your displays look professional and inviting, don't have any signage or promotional banners…
