Opinion on framing and suggestions for supplier of inexpensive frames?

Started this discussion. Last reply by Chris Fedderson Feb 19. 7 Replies

I am rather new to showing, and have been framing my work in a variety of frames purchased from Michael's Craft stores, JoAnn's, Hobby Lobby, and what have you.  Buying each frame individually, and…Continue

Newer Artist Looking for Good Mid-level Show in Ohio

Hello All,  I'm relatively new to showing.  I've done fours shows, but all have been small, local art and craft type venues.  I'd like to tackle a more art dedicated show at a mid-level, but not sure…Continue

"I haven't had a problem with this using the Krylon UV spray, but I have experienced this with other brands. I think its because some of the other brands go on heavier."

Sonja Jones replied to Rick Wallace's discussion Finishing artwork?...
"I use Krylon UV Resistant Clear Acrylic spray coatings, Rick.  Comes in gloss or matte finish. I’ve tried some fancier sprays, but like this one best.  Some of the other sprays sit too wet on the paper, but this one dries quickly.…"

"I can't speak to finishing the oil paintings, as I don't use that medium.  However, for water-based mediums there are a great number of good products.  Krylon makes a non-yellowing clear coat acrylic spray in both a gloss and a…"

"I'm certainly not an expert on the show circuit, but my personal opinion would be that it depends on the artwork.  I also paint in watercolor, and there are some paintings which seem to benefit from a gloss varnish and others that…"

Sonja Jones replied to Sonja Jones's discussion Does size matter? (with regard to artwork!!!)
"Yes, Robbie, I think the mini paintings are very trendy now!  I find I like to create a lot of smaller pieces because people who like them can easily justify buying one!  The size allows them to find room to display it, and the prices are…"

"A) It's funny you had to clarify the "Size matters" remark :-) B) Less is more, at times. Having a cleaner look in the booth shot is better. The jury is only supposed to see what the general booth looks like. Not inspect what the…"

Does size matter? (with regard to artwork!!!)

I am a newer artist, just trying to get into some mid-level art shows this year.  I've been researching how to improve my booth shots by looking at other artists' examples, and one thing that struck me was how large many of their pieces were compared to mine.  I do mostly watercolors and some acrylic, but my largest pieces only measure about 16" x 20" framed, and I have a lot that are 11" x 14" framed or even smaller.  Most of my acrylic canvas work only measures 12" x 12" or smaller.  Does…See More

What are the best things about art fairs
Validation of my artwork.
Best show ever and why
So far, the second time I did the Gingerbread House Art and Craft show. After a year of showing, I learned a bit about shows and marketing, and I had my highest sales to date.
Worst show ever and why
The Chagrin Falls Avant-garde show was my worst. The booth fee was high for me at the time, and I didn't sell a single item. Bad weather kept the crowd size down, but I don't know if I would've done better even so.

St. Louis Art Fair Mock Jury 2018

Posted on February 5, 2018 at 2:03pm 4 Comments

Hi All!

I recently participated in the St. Louis Mock Jury this past January.  Even though I was unable to attend in person, I participated through their webinar.  As a newbie, I found quite a few take-aways from this experience. Even though I didn't really have a booth shot to submit, the biggest tips for me were on my future booth shots.  Don't overcrowd your booth with too much artwork, make your displays look professional and inviting, don't have any signage or promotional banners…
