Sheila Evans replied to terry metz's discussion 'Participating Artists Jurying Shows.....'
I've been asked to be a juror for a show that I do regularly. I received an award last year and was already jury exempt. This show normally has one participating artist juror (for entry, not awards) per year.  I really don't see how I…

Sheila Evans replied to Robin Ragsdale's discussion 'Entrance fees?'
There was a high entrance fee as long as I did the show. I think it may have gone from $20 to $25 or something, but that didn't make much difference in numbers that I could see. I guess I never really thought of it as a family show, since there…

Sheila Evans replied to Robin Ragsdale's discussion 'Entrance fees?'
And the entrance fee certainly didn't help keep the booth fees down at Sausalito. Sheesh.

Sheila Evans replied to Marguerite Esrock's discussion 'Artist Awards- Are they important or just icing on the cake?'
It's nice to get a re-invite to a show and maybe a little cash. But when deciding whether to apple to a show, it doesn't even cross my mind to look at how they handle awards (unless they hand out so many that half the show is re-invited,…

Sheila Evans replied to Doug Hoppes's discussion 'Speckles on photos of oil paintings'
I get the best results photographing my oil paintings outside on cloudy days. I use a polarizing filter on my lens and place something white below the painting to reflect light up and even it out. I don't use an impasto technique, but it does…

Sheila Evans replied to Susan Hohman's discussion 'Is it taboo to photograph my small collage work in its mat or frame?'
Looking at Suzanne's image on my iPad, the texture and depth of the mat gave a very good sense of scale. But would those things show up less well in a projection situation because the mat is white?

Hello Sheila, I understand you've done the BAM show.  I'm vacillating between it and Spokane's MAC show.  What's your take on the Bellevue show(s)?  I'm not too keen on displaying in an underground parking…

Sheila Evans replied to Jennifer Donald's discussion 'What would you do - plagiarism'
Do you personally know one or both artists?  If I was friends with the offending artist (and I would be reconsidering that at this point) I might try to talk to them about it. It sounds like you must know this person, if you are sure they are…

Sheila Evans replied to Connie Mettler's discussion 'Where do you keep your cash & checks at the art fairs?'
I have a collection of little zippered purses on long straps, the kind you get at those fair-trade fairs. They are small enough to be unobtrusive and I have different colors to blend with my clothing. I wear one at all times, and if I have more than…

Sheila Evans replied to Linda and Jim Dalton's discussion 'What's the worst question you have been asked at an art fair?'
This weekend a visitor went through my entire booth rather quickly, scanning the display walls filled with my pastel paintings, then zeroed in on a knockdown shelving unit I use as a sort of desk. On the top shelf I had a group of small oil…

Sheila Evans replied to Geoff Coe's discussion 'Donating to Charity Auctions: Career-killer?'
I agree 100% with the article, and think it is totally relevant to this forum. I get hit up several times a year for charity auctions, by both art fairs and other venues. I finally stopped altogether when I realized that the only real effect was the…

Sheila Evans replied to Kathleen J. Clausen's discussion 'Shoplifters- - - - - On the Rise?'
In Bellevue, WA this year there was a string of thefts from artists, but not merchandise. The thieve(s) would wait until the artists were distracted then actually slip into their back storage areas, find the artist's purse (usually buried under…

Sheila Evans replied to Maija Baynes's discussion 'Annoying White bar'
That's what I said in my earlier post---it moves the bar rather than gets rid of it. But that lets you read the line that was covered. The you can turn the iPad around again.

Sheila Evans replied to Pat Sorbini's discussion 'selling unframed collage'
I do use the acid-free fome core as my backing board. I use the "art care" kind which is supposed to be thte most archival. I'm so glad the unframed pieces worked out for you!

Sheila Evans replied to MIchelle Monet's discussion 'How do you respond?'
Geri, you are right. I usually say "thank you" when leaving another artist's booth just like I would when leaving a shop where I didn't buy. It is a natural inclination to be polite and there is nothing wrong with that. Although…

Sheila Evans replied to Maija Baynes's discussion 'Annoying White bar'
With the iPad, at least you can turn the pad sideways, and the bar moves somewhere else so you can read the whole post.

What are the best things about art fairs
Travel, meeting customers, being outside, profit potential (in no particular order).
Best show ever and why
Bellevue, WA - profitability
Sausalito and Sun Valley - fun
Worst show ever and why
Art in the Park , Missoula MT - booth location on asphalt in 100+ degree weather. Customers went right past booths on the street to get to the cooler park area. Barely made booth fee and got tar from the asphalt all over everything.

Hello Sheila,

I understand you've done the BAM show.  I'm vacillating between it and Spokane's MAC show.  What's your take on the Bellevue show(s)?  I'm not too keen on displaying in an underground parking garage even if they provide electricity.

I checked out your website.  Love your leaves.  How did the Portland Pearl show go for you?  I received an invitation to apply for Pearl 2012.  Do you think the show's having difficulty finding artists?

I hope you can answer this question ASAP :-) ... Are you completely happy with Teamac? Be brutally honest about the positives and negative aspects you have experienced. Have they been consistent with their fees and charges? Have they surprised you at any point with undisclosed charges/fees?

Also, I called their 1-800 and regular number but no one seems to be there (standard voice mail). How do they handle customer suppoirt/ merchant issues, customer support? Are they 24/7/365? Customer support / technical support is an important issue for me as well.

Thank you
