Paying booth and jury fee with entry

How can fairs get away with this?  I've applied to 14 so far that just want the jury fee.  That's fair.  But the last 6 on my list all require both fees at the same time.  This just doesn't seem…Continue

Want to do a September indoor art fair. Spaces are 8'x8'. Need a hanging system for my framed prints. Searching rental companies in Grand Rapids without luck so far. Any suggestions?

Grand Haven, MI art fair 6/26-27

I've just heard the tents are to be back-to-back with absolutely no storage anywhere. I am in a panic. Has anyone done this fair down Washington Avenue? How does one work without space for the table,…Continue

Decling an Invitation to Show

As I can't find this topic, I'm starting it. As a first timer I assumed if I got into 1 or 2 fairs I'd be lucky.  Well, I've gotten into 6 and had to turn down 2.  The first because I'd applied to 2…Continue

Hi Elizabeth, I agree with Lori, the process should be understood by the patron, but if the discussion centers around it, and if the block is produced as a visual aid, the attention then becomes focused on the block, since that's the thing you…

I think that you are right about the process being a bit of a distraction. Once I briefly explain the process I'm usually asked "how long does it take to carve this"? I hate that question because it brings the conversation to the…

A question for printmakers: "What is this?" People often ask this when they encounter my display.  I love talking about printmaking and enjoy discussing my process.  But I am concerned that when the discussion turns to the…

Not exactly what you wanted to hear, but -- I may be trying to figure out how to sell my tent this weekend.  Yup, the lovely one I bought brand new from Flourish in early 2010 and used for 2 summers - less than 15 fairs all told.  I sit…

Has any of the printmakers here participated in the Omaha Art Festival recently? This looks like a nice show, but looks can be deceiving.

Hi Lori, Glad to hear from another printmaker from the midwest!   My toughest conversation is with people who walk in and as "What was the original medium?"  Even with a block in hand, I sometimes can't convince them that I…

Yes your right. Our odds as printmakers to get invited to a show are much better!

Hi Lori! I've learned to bring one of my lino blocks along to the art fairs so I can show people exactly what they are and how they are made. People are impressed when they realize how much work goes into printmaking, and are more likely to…

Nice to see there's a few other printmakers out there. I work with linocut most of the time, but am experimenting with some collage and collograph incorporated into it. I'm from Northern Iowa. I meet very few fellow printmakers. Usually…

Boy, these responses get all jumbled up time-wise trying to keep the stream together, sorry.  I neglected to mention that at the Outsider fair I met some of the greatest people/artists I've ever had the pleasure to meet and who I hope to…

Sure sounds like the same semi-illiterate person.  Changing countries now.  Beware of the "urgent reply" bit too I guess.

So nice meeting you today Joan, sometimes I think the people I 'talk' to here don't really exist - you proved me wrong.  It was an odd fair, wasn't it.  My work stood out as fine art, although fitting the definition of…

Interesting, thanks.  When I got the email asking if I was still interested as they had a spot for me I did ask if they were sure my work would fit in and gave them my website address again to look at.  I'm definitely not a savant,…

Online Scam

Posted on July 2, 2011 at 9:21pm 9 Comments

Don't know how many people have websites, but I was just approached by a woman who apparently is running a scam.  Luckily I smelled something fishy, googled her, and didn't let it go any further.

Short version - June email from Helen Woermann (HWoermannstore@gmail.com) but it was sent via my website, asking if 3 specific prints were available and could I send them out immediately to New Zealand.  Responded that there'd be a hefty…

Are there any printmakers out there making money?

Posted on June 4, 2011 at 7:59pm 10 Comments

The few other printmakers I have been running into shows aren't doing much better than I am.  Are there printmakers making money these days - and if so, where?  Not in Michigan.  Sold one print at this weekend's 2-day Kalamazoo fair.  Lovely fair, my favorite as a fair goer - been going since the 1960s.  High quality, lovely setting, artist amenities, nice crowd, couldn't have asked for more interest in my prints and process, but all I did was educate people, they 'loved' my work and my…

Velcro for tent sign

Posted on April 25, 2011 at 8:42pm 4 Comments

Have a trimline with barrel roof.  Had 2 vinyl signs made - one with logo, one with my name - to go on either side of the front 'window'.  Shopping for industrial strength velcro and it says don't use with foldable vinyl.  Anyone have suggestions on what kind of velcro/fasteners to use?  I'll take the signs off for packing the tent.

Declining a Fair

Posted on April 25, 2011 at 6:40pm 12 Comments

Was waitlisted into Chicago's Gold Coast fair in July.  Thrilled of course, booked a hotel, parking, paid booth fee.  Realized that this was going to be an incredibly expensive fair. Today the final rules/regs arrived and I realized it would be next to impossible for me to do it alone and given how dismal my sales were last year (my first) no way I'd come out of it ahead.  I just declined.  Hurts.  Really want to do a Chicago fair, but guess I need to research better on which one would be more… Continue

Thanks Bill. I really feel that it wasn't a wasted weekend by any means. Just getting to be a part of that community was amazing - something I had to experience to believe. And learning how to smile and chat a bit with strangers will be an ongoing learning experience. Always nice hearing someone praise my work... just need to have them buy it now!

I just read your entry about your first show......Don't give up as it takes a little time to figure out a few things. If people are making comments about your work then its only a matter of time until you get the person that has the disposible income that likes your work and is willing to part with the money. You will get many people making comments (probably 100 to 1) for each sale. I have found that 99% of the artist will be friendly and helpful, whcih is a valuble resource to tap, so ask questions an glean what works for you and your art. I have been doing shows for a few years now and I am still refineing my setup. There is lots of good information on this site about the business of selling art so just hang in there and good times will come.
