"Illustration to my post a minute ago: Right here in my town there was this guy, "Joe Artist", about ten years ago. He didn't have a license, a permit, he was not part of an organized, licensed, permitted show. Just him and his tent,…"

Rick Woods commented on Connie Mettler's blog post Moderation and Censorship
"Jacqueline, Big gray area there, but....your question is related to First Amendment issues. I think you could say that crafts have a sense of utility to them. They are made to fit a purpose beyond just sitting there looking interesting, or pretty,…"

Rick Woods commented on Connie Mettler's blog post Moderation and Censorship
"Haven't commented in a while, got a few minutes to spare until the next project needs to start. Ditto the requirement for a thick skin. On the other hand, profanity, and lizard brain knee jerk flame wars aren't too inspiring for the rest…"

Rick Woods replied to Steve Vaughn's discussion best-of-show?
"I couldn't resist jumping into this discussion because of the way the lead was written. I was just clowning around, but I admit that there is a very serious side to the issue. Photography can be extremely complex, extremely technical, be it…"

Rick Woods commented on Paul Zerjay's blog post Why is it?
"Inexperience most likely, with dealing with the weather. If you've ever camped in a tent in less than perfect summer weather, you likely already have a basic skill set to deal with keeping an EZ up from going airborne.  Warren, those folks…"

Rick Woods commented on Paul Zerjay's blog post Why is it?
"Phil, this is my second year, my last show of the season last year turned into an EZ up train wreck too. But not mine. I was staked, weighted, lashed and braced three ways from Sunday. We get these little meteorological practical jokes around here…"

Rick Woods commented on Paul Zerjay's blog post Why is it?
"Thanks Leslie, I'm lined up for a Reno Artown show in July, and five days of Hot August Nights, Reno's biggest single event of the season: 300,000 classic car buffs, 3,000 examples cruising, showing and shining, and me in the middle of it…"

Rick Woods commented on Paul Zerjay's blog post Why is it?
"Ok, ok I'm a newbie, but not a moron. I bought an EZ up knockoff because it was CHEAP, not because it was bullet-proof. I cast corner weights in plastic buckets, with pegs to attach utility handles. I use four ratchet tiedowns to attach said…"

What are the best things about art fairs
So far? Lots of people cruising through, making comments, asking questions. Only one buyer tho....
Best show ever and why
Connections yArt sale, Reno, Jule, 2010
Lots of artists I knew, patrons present, crowd was a repeat. Even picked up a commission on this one.
Worst show ever and why
City of Sparks Arts In Bloom Festival, Mothers Day, 2010.
Access was terrible coming and going.
Demographics were all wrong, dog walkers, runners and picnickers primarily, not buyers
Weather: location was a peninsula in a lake, very exposed, winds and rain shut us all down 3 1/2 hours early.
Terrible promotion, and conflict with another event that was much better from a visitor's perspective.
Zero sales, for a high fee for a one-day sale.
Close second:
Reno Aces Art and Craft fair.
Not juried, so lots of buy/sell vendors sucking up casual impulse buyers with cheap toys and bangles. No promotion that you would notice.

West Coast Recommendations?

Posted on August 26, 2010 at 11:00pm 2 Comments

Looking for feedback for best west coast venues for fine artists? I'm looking hard at the Boulder City Art in the Park fair coming up Oct. 2,3. Any sales forecasts? Opinions on quality of presentation for the price? (Over 500 samoleans at this late date) Also: Indian Wells Fine Art and Fine Craft Fair, Palm Springs, and Boulder City Fine Art Fine Craft Fair, both in April.
