"I built and sold my first full flower carved saddle in 1962 for $325, top price at the time. I was 18 and three years into my apprenticeship. That same saddle today would sell for over $6,000. If something wasn't selling, rather than lower the…"

Is your pricing keepin up with inflation?

In the midst of all of these “for sale” blog postings, I thought I should get a discussion going on a topic of interest to us all.  So here goes:Despite historically low inflation, the Consumer Price Index (CPI-U) has increased by 18% in the last ten years (from 207.3 to 244.3).  Have you increased your prices by 18% as well?  If not, why not?See More

"You’re right: art shows are definitely dying.  Money laundering and campaign finance are now demonstrably more lucrative.  You should change careers now.  By the way, what booth slots at what shows will you be freeing up?"

Is your pricing keepin up with inflation?

In the midst of all of these “for sale” blog postings, I thought I should get a discussion going on a topic of interest to us all.  So here goes:

I recently did a deep dive into vehicle loading, and discovered that it is much easier to overload a vehicle than one would think.  It seems like a simple calculation: get a vehicle and/or trailer large enough to accommodate everything you need for a show, then make sure that the tow vehicle and hitch are rated to tow the weight of your trailer plus a guestimate of the weight of your gear, and you’re done.  My tow vehicle is rated…

Charlotte riots and the "Festival in the Park"

Posted on September 23, 2016 at 2:14pm 6 Comments

I noticed on http://festivalinthepark.org/ that Charlotte’s “Festival In the Park” this weekend is still going ahead as scheduled, despite the Charlotte riots and curfews.  I was wondering how that is working out.  Are the artists and crafters actually setting up?  What were they told by the promoter?  Will anyone show up tomorrow and Sunday?  Are the police actually able to provide credible security?
