"Thanks, Jim. I'm about to go up and apply all suggestions :) I'm glad to be using the right blades for both, I was concerned about that."

Jim Parker replied to Pat Sorbini's discussion mat cutter problem
"Sounds like it's dragging on the bottom of the channel. Remove the blade and check the adjustment screw for the depth of the straight blade to make sure it's all the way in. For 3X board the bottom screw should be all the way in…"

Jacqueline Webster replied to Pat Sorbini's discussion mat cutter problem
"I know this is possibly a dumb question to ask, but could you somehow have 2 blades in the cutter?  This will do exactly as you describe.  Sometimes the blades will stick together badly out of the package."

"Thanks, Larry. I like the idea of cutting over another board. It is a new box of blades. Can a whole box be defective? Most likely it's out a hair too far. I always struggle with that.  OK, I'm going up there! wish me luck and thanks…"

Larry Berman replied to Pat Sorbini's discussion mat cutter problem
"Different blades for straight and bevel cuts.Try using a second piece of mat board underneath. The blade should go part way through the under mat. That enables the blades to last longer.A second thought is that if you have a new batch of blades,…"

mat cutter problem

Approaching wit's end here. I've been using a logan 650 for years. I use the "straight" side mostly for cutting my book covers (3X utility board) and scoring fome core. The mat cutting side works fine, but the straight side is chewing up the point of the blades. After one cut. I have cleaned out the channel that the blade runs through. I've adjusted the blade every way I can. I don't know why it is doing this. Does it need to be adjusted? Is that possible? Any ideas?See More

Pat Sorbini commented on Michelle Wermuth's blog post Does this offend you?
"I think it is amusing. Professional artists don't "art" all day. The promotion and clients parts is true of any business in one permutation or another. The rest is what everyone else on this planet pretty much deals with, It is the…"

Chautauqua Crafts Alliance

This is one of the good ones. I wrote about it once before, amazed that in the midst of  tremendous, frightening thunderstorm, a volunteer unzipped a bit of our canopy to look in and ask if we were OK. That speaks volumes about respect in my book.

Anyway..the show is held on the grounds of the Chautauqua Institution in Mayville, NY about an hour south of Buffalo.  There are 2 shows, July and August. You can apply for one or both and I was fortunate enough to get both this…

I call it "Nightmare on Montgomery Street"

This is billed as an art and fine craft show, boasts a tough jury, apps are through Zapp, cost is 260 for 3 days. There are money awards in categories and one "Award of Distinction" The show is set up around Columbus circle and the streets that come off it like spokes on a wheel. One of the streets, Montgomery, has had its own show for years... a "gypsy" show that has lots of good work but also some bad stuff and some B/S and some groups…

Showdown at Allentown

Allentown Art Festival, Buffalo, NY  June 11 & 12. 450 exhibitors on downtown streets, 54th year.

We set up for the weekend on Friday night. Just the canopy and shelves because we knew we'd be there at 6am Saturday to grab one of the parking spots right behind our booth. It was our first outdoor show of the season and even though we were sure we had everything, we were missing the tie downs for the weights we attach to each leg of the rig. Since we live just blocks away,…

Christkindle Market, Canandaigua, NY

Posted on November 20, 2010 at 8:29pm 1 Comment

Canandaigua is in the Finger Lakes/Wine Country of central NY. Many art/craft shows have been floated in this area to varying degrees of success. It is a charming town with a lot of cottagers in the Summer. We did a show there in August at Sonnenberg Gardens, site of a renovated mansion, and did well. This show was at yet another renovated mansion and I had heard from many art carnie friends that the organization was stellar and this was a new show to watch. So I went for… Continue

Elmwood Avenue Festival of the Arts-Buffalo, NY

Posted on September 1, 2010 at 6:49pm 5 Comments

Another decent show for us. Must be something in the Lake Erie water.

This show is 11 years old. It was started by art show artists who were ticked off at being juried out of Allentown in favor of "foreigners". They wanted this show to be the anti-Allentown alternative.

Western NYers get an extra jury point to tilt the show in their favor. There are 180 booths now, started at 80 and I hope they stop here. There are components to this show that…
