"Definitively not an art festival but they don't try to sell it that way either. I did one of their NJ shows and I met many there that I've met with other organizers. The show I did had some negatives like selection of the day (it was a…"

How to charge

Hi All,I'm a crocheter and I have recently taken on some commissions so I have to figure out how to charge the clients. For the pieces I make myself (yarn from stash and known pattern) I have my own formula to price the items but for these clients I'm not sure how to do it. One of the clients chose one of the pieces I already have but she wants a different yarn and she requested me to accompany her in order to choose the right yarn for the work. The other client gave me the yarn and wants me to…See More

Mall Craft Shows

Looking for shows to apply for 2012, I've seen there are Craft Shows taking place in different Malls year round and I would like to read about other people's experiences in Mall Craft Fairs. I've seen some of them can be 5-6 days and open long hours which could be a problem for me since I do the shows by myself. I make crochet with wire jewelry and crocheted garments and I'm not sure if this would be something worth trying. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks!See More

Lois Songer replied to Maria Naranjo's discussion Does overbooking happen in the shows?
"To be clear about our Art Show, the numbers that I "overbooked" I can actually accommodate.  But I like to keep the number smaller so I don't have to use the "not perfect" spaces or squeeze people too close!  "

Larry Berman replied to Maria Naranjo's discussion Does overbooking happen in the shows?
"Artists overbook to make sure they can earn a living, but the better shows know in advance how many spaces they have and work to have a balanced show within that parameter. They do maintain a wait list that they go to if there are cancellations or…"

Linnea Lahlum replied to Maria Naranjo's discussion Does overbooking happen in the shows?
"Some of the for-profit promoters operate that way. It is pretty much “deadline until full.” It doesn’t mean they reject people before the category is full, but the jurying is done in batches or as they come in. There are a couple…"

Best show ever and why
I'm a newbie in this area so I have little to refer to.
So far I had only sold things to family and friends and in my first show it was incredible that people that didn't know me would come and buy my jewelry!
The rest of the crafters in the show also went around buying things from the others, there was a really good vibe there.
Worst show ever and why
Street Fair in Cranford, NJ. The organizer announced this show as a very affluent area really good for crafters but the crowd didn't respond at all. People just walked around as they were taking a walk in the park, they only bought lemonade and plastic clackers imported from China for the kids. The clackers' guy was the only one doing business that day. On top of that my neighbors were a window's installing company and a lady that sold stuff to decorate you garden. I talked to other crafters all around and some were infuriated with their commercial firms neighbors. I sold 1 necklace during the whole day to the Mom of another artist.

Hi Maria!
Glad you found us!! We both belong to Jewelry Genies! I have tried crocheting- both fiber and wire, and will probably try with wire again, as I love working with wire, beads, pearls and crystals. I am located in Maine, and mostly do the craft shows here and in New Hampshire. Visit the forums, a lot of your questions may be answered by reading past posts!! Any of our vets here are of the helpful variety....we are a sharing group!! Hope to see you posting here often!! Glad your first show was a positive experience!!
