"That is an excellent idea, Robert! I know a lot of fellow artists and craftspeople that feel as I do. The problem seems to be twofold: the persons running the show don't want to be burdened with jurying and "sorting the wheat from the…"

Art markets, artists, and buy/sell vendors

Hi there, I've been following AFI for awhile and really appreciate the wealth of knowledge, information, and the imagination shared on this website. If you have any thoughts on this subject, I'd like to hear from you.I'm a painter living in the New Orleans area, and pretty much make a living local shows and doing commissions for clients. I started freelancing as an illustrator/graphic designer in the late 80's, but it was almost 10 years ago that I started making a living full time as an…See More

"Make sure the outside diameters are the same, and keep in mind the PVC pipe is much more flexible. I would be concerned that a wind gust might break the PVC pipe. The metal pipe is strong enough that tents are made from it."

What are the best things about art fairs
Opportunity to meet people and sell my artwork. Making friends, business connections, and attracting commissions.
Best show ever and why
Celebration in the Oaks at City Park, New Orleans, December 2005. Locals were coming home after the levee failure during hurricane Katrina had flooded the city. They were starting to rebuild and decorate their homes, and had lots of insurance money to spend. The artists/craftspeople who were there still remember this "golden season" fondly.
Worst show ever and why
Various shows, terrible sales due to one or all of these factors:
A. Lack of advertising, or forgot to mention the Artists Village at the festival.
B. Event was saturated with flea market/buy sell vendors, which cheapened the quality of the market and the shoppers' attitude.
C. Weather --- monsoon-like conditions wiped us out, destroyed tents, and I almost lost my entire body of work.
