We did the Tempe show and did very well.  I agree that there were a lot more lookers than buyers but I liked it because there were people from all over the country and Canada.  Most wanted their artwork shipped to them.  Tempe is a…

Just to add a few points if I may.  Amy is a stickler on rules, when you enter the show to unload do it before setting up.  Unload your vehicle and then remove it before setting up.  Her security is pretty good but I would never leave…

do you know the reason for the application extension for your art show on Zapp...curious , because I am always thinking for an extension the reason would only be lack of apps and with your great show that can not be the reason.....thanks

Jackie Russo commented on Michelle Sholund's blog post 'Arizona - Mixing Fairs and Galleries'
Hi Michelle, I sell at both galleries and shows.  My prices are the same at both, I would never undersell my galleries.  When I do a show I am assuming the role of a gallery, incurring the expenses of the show (retail space) and that of a…

I am only speaking for the St. James Court section of the show, but I invite back 55% of the show each year. I typically get about 45% returns do to retirement, sickness, family issues, out of the art show business, etc. The rest of the show is…

There are 2 shows that operate on 3rd St. The first is The South Third St. Show which is on Zapp. The second is 1300 Association which is not on Zapp but only takes paper applications. They each have their own coordinator.

Do not believe, ever, that there are thousands of applications for ANY show. I'm thinking never more than 1500 for even the very best show, with most shows not getting anywhere near 1000. Still, it is tricky to navigate, but not so impossible…

Hi Marguerite! It's great to have you here answering questions about St James. So I'm still deciding if I should apply, other artists talk about how impossible is to get to the show. That most of the artists are already chosen  and a…

I'm a bit confused about the third street shows.  We are in the Third Street Neighborhood Association show and I have to read carefully to make sure we're sending the checks to the right place.  Does the other third street show…

Hi Jennifer, I read your response about doing art fairs closer to home and saw that you are concentrating on corporate art.  I have been told over and over that my work should be in a corporate setting.  My question is how do you go about…

Discounts and taxes

Posted on July 29, 2010 at 1:27pm 17 Comments

I have been some what successful in the past telling customers that I don't discount my work and I do charge sales tax. Not to say that I haven't given any discounts (especially on older work) but I try not to use a discount to close the sale. Instead I try to sell the value of the art and artist, most times this works. I have been told by many customers that I am the "only" one charging tax, or not making "deals". For me making a deal is not a comfortable way of doing business and once you… Continue
