"Jeff…… Are art shows dying?  No, but making money at them may be.   I have been doing outdoor since 1985 and have kept good sales records. I sell original acrylic paintings from $30 to $300.  The old rule when I…"

Tell me the truth. Are Art Shows dying or not?

Like some other old timers, I've  been doing shows for 30 years and after some breaking in, sales during the 90s and early 2000s were great!!! Sausalito, Ft. Worth, Sun Valley, about 17 per year and sales were booming. Then 9/11 and later the recession of 2008 I noticed my sales were HALF of the usual. I also noted that the booth fees did not dip, nor the hotels, or gas or food. So each show was a gamble after that time. Dave Piper may have had it right- Bayou City may be dead in a few years.…See More

"The art shows, as with all of Main Street USA, is rotting from roots on up, while Wall Street booms. Same thing happened in the 1920s and I hope we all know how that turned out.  We are at the end of a huge cycle, a "blow off top" of…"

"Ha,ha...great observations. I just moved in to a brick and mortar artist market, curious to see how I'll do. Also have stuff in a Holiday Market until the end of December...maybe that's a viable option, will let you know how it goes."

What are the best things about art fairs
Having huge sales of my art.
Best show ever and why
Sausalito Art Festival- made my top sales ever and won best in drawing.
Worst show ever and why
St. George Utah. Seniors mostly. Made expenses. Most artists around me did the show as a favor for the new promoter- incredible number of artists did "zero". I was stunned.

Do double booths Pay off?

Posted on April 13, 2016 at 1:51pm 1 Comment

It's a great question. And over the years I have always opted for a double booth for my own reasons.

It looks much more substantial which customers can assume , "Oh this is more impressive, this artist is more successful  THEREFORE I'd better check it out."

I specialize in humor which at first blush always suffers from the Rodney Dangefield effect- "Don't get no respect". But once people catch on to what I have (sometimes it's the color that draws them in- sometimes it's my…

Fairhope and alternate show

Posted on November 18, 2015 at 11:34am 7 Comments

Fairhope used to be a very decent show but has slipped in last 5 years. They do get 150,000-200,000 or so attendees but many are also going to the Art Center show down the way. That show always struck me as the "sad sister" to the Chamber show. It's not a high end show for sure. And the sad kicker is that several shops and outsiders set up "also booths" to capture sales although they are not in either show. The public does not know this and probably does not care. And the Chamber & City…

I understand your concern, Jeff. It surely make sense. The person who posted the original request is someone I know. I do not know her friend. Sandi regularly posts on AFI and I have met her at shows. Please look at her website, http://www.schimmelart.com. AND I thank you for making me more aware of the possibility of a scam.
