Proper Show Promotion

Have seen mentions in several threads about "proper promotion", but none of them actually talk about what that is, so... Please mention some of the things (or all of them) that promoters should/must…Continue

Hugo Cruz replied to David Kachel's discussion How do I NOT sell without a matte?
"There are reasons why they ask you for just the print: Perhaps they are woefully familiar with the ridiculously inflated prices of framing services. They don't like the color or size of mat you offer (ie, white) and figure you could keep it…"

"No imagination... I took all these 'pitchers' with an old Kodak Brownie. I have them printed at Walmart. These are all frames from the dollar store. It'll make 'em crazy!!"

"The best answer for "will you take less" is: I never discount my work. That way you can be sure you will never find it anywhere cheaper than what you paid for it. I am going to raise my prices next month though."

Frames & Print Size and Display Lights... and Spinach

Some of you may recall I have never sold at an art fair, simply plan to, but DO have a gallery here in the deep wilds of West Texas.I have discovered that a lot of what you folks do has considerable bearing on what I do, so...On the subject of framing; I have a stock of dirt cheap, trashy black aluminum frames that I use strictly for exhibition. I refuse to sell them because they are such junk. I only use them for shows. Their only redeeming quality is that they are convenient.I have also been…See More

How do I NOT sell without a matte?

This is probably the perfect group of people to get an answer to this minor dilemma.I am perfectly willing to sell customers just a print (I'm a photographer), but I strongly prefer to sell it matted. The reason is that I know most framers are terrible hacks and will not use quality materials. I go to a lot of trouble and expense to make sure my buyers have archival quality prints and the only way to make sure they get matting of the same quality is if I provide it.I tell customers this, but…See More

West Texas Anybody?

Posted on October 27, 2011 at 7:53pm 6 Comments

I'm in Alpine.

Would love to know what goings on are going on in West Texas.

Statistics??

Posted on October 26, 2011 at 3:00pm 33 Comments

I'm curious about the availability of some statistics re art show results for the arstist:

In particular, what percentage of artists, on average, lose money, break even and make money at art fairs?

Generalizations gratefully accepted as I realize it is doubtful real stats are available.

Also, what about attrition? What percentage of new participants are gone in a year, two years, etc. Again, I imagine only generalizations will be available.
