"Thanks, Colin.  I might take you up on the Waukesha one.  My best shows last summer were the smaller ones.  That's not to say that all small ones are great, but it seems my odds are better.  I did well at a nice little…"

"Welcome, new people!  I'm so jealous that you all have shows scheduled. Here it is, April, and I have but 1 show lined up.  I'm wait-listed for a bunch, but most I applied to declined.  It's getting really depressing!…"

"I have my track lights duct taped along the front top pipe. Then I bring the cord down a corner. It works well. You can see my indoor set up, though the lights are cropped out, at the bottom of this page:…"

"Just as a follow up, Larry's conduit suggestion worked beautifully.  Trying to explain it to the guy at Home Depot was pretty funny but we got it figured out, and I had a light system that was sort of portable."

"Hi Diane,  I, too, and perpetually in search of the perfect online solution.  I made my current website on iWeb-it's a drop and drag type setup, and the website looks fine.  The problem is, Apple is discontinuing support of iWeb,…"

"I didn't know the term until recently, so no worries :) They are horizontal bars that are adjustable in length and have hooks on the ends that can be inserted into upright/vertical pipes. The slider going across the top front of the booth would…"

"I didn't know that extras might be available.  What are sliders (color me ignorant)? I wonder if I make a support system (from wood and conduit) like Larry suggested, if it would if it would fit into said sliders."

"I think you need something to support the track lights. I've screwed two four foot sections of track light to a 1x2 and strung it across my booth diagonally clamped to 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch electric conduit that fit inside each other. That way…"

"Assuming you are renting the pipe and drape from the show producer, I would recommend getting in touch with them and asking to provide you with two extra "sliders" - one for the front of the booth, and one for the center (if it's a…"

How to use track lighting with pipe and drape?

I need help with lighting for an indoor show this weekend. We just do a handful of shows per year, so I don't want a huge investment. I already purchased a track light set, but I don't know how to support it - in this case to a pipe and drape booth set up. Could I zip tie it right to the upper pipe? Or should it go across? Or do I just abandon the track lights and buy clamp lights? Yikes.

"I concur with Michelle. I bucked up and bought a Hollywood chair with all the attachments. I LOVE it. It has a fold up footrest, a swivel table thingee, a cup holder, a bag under the seat in which I hide my money and snacks...it's the bomb.…"

What are the best things about art fairs
Feedback and reinforcement from real live people. Without that, the work can get stale. I also love chatting with other artists and getting tips and hearing their stories. And of coursr there's the shopping!
Best show ever and why
There are a lot of factors that go into what makes a show "best" - it's not just the money! I really enjoyed the Long Grove Arts Fest. I was busy, which is nice, and customers were digging what I was selling. The show is close to home, they provide helpers and parking. Set up was simple...what more could you ask for?
Worst show ever and why
Autumn Arts and Crafts show at the Odeum in Villa Park, IL. It was awful! I did not do my homework and visit the show before applying. My work did not fit with the vibe of the show at all. Customers were looking for crafty bargains, not what I was selling. Four days of disinterest is a blow to the ego and a waste of time.

I thought I would share our experience, in case anyone is considering making the investment to participate in this show. And yes, it is an investment. A $2000 investment! With that in mind, my business partner and I tried to go there with a full load (we make recycled wool accessories, primarily in the $50-$90 range). This is our second year, so we had some expectations and goals. We had what I would consider to be a good show, and if we had brought more $10-$30 items we would have made another… Continue
