I hear you. Same experiences here. This year has convinced me to totally revamp my business model. Art fairs are going to be a much smaller part of it.

You know, i think they make small battery operated motion alarms you can put inside your canopy at night. They have a loud alarm and go off when they detect any motion in your booth.(which there should be none after hours. Not too expensive or…

Hi Trilby... I'm just curious where you found those stats you mentioned. I'm not disputing them, i would just like to read more from any study that has been done. From talking to many artists at the shows I do most are doing better than…

I received an email from the NMC show with a "post-show survey" attached.  I'm sure all the participating artists received it.  I hope everyone completes it and sends it in because it will help them to make the proper…

I knew some artists had problems with people taking photos of their work, but I didn't think that those people were actually serious about printing them out for use! I don't think people understand that they are hurting anyone by…

Please don't take my earlier criticisms personally. For me this is all a business analysis. My entire annual income comes from selling my artwork. I can't afford to make too many miscalculations. And I'm sure that most other artists…

I was directly across from Charles and it was a very poor day for me. I had an aunt from Italy in town and she (and other family members) made enough purchases for me to make my booth rent but not near what I needed to cover travel expenses. If it…

The photo says it all - a lovely little show with no people.   What a pity.  Signage and advertising is so important yet it seems to be a stumbling block for so many shows.

Quick review of Traverse City Art Fair (Michigan)

Posted on August 1, 2011 at 9:57pm 12 Comments

Quick review of the Traverse City, MI art fair on July 30, 2011.

Hot.

Low Traffic.

Broke even.

Want more details?

OK.

This show is held on a small college campus in Traverse City. (Northwestern Michigan College)

It can be a long dolly to bring in your stuff. (It was for me)

The location where the show is held is tucked away in a wooded area that is not visible from any normal tourist traffic. I had a difficult time finding the…

Short video of the most exciting moment in marquetry (wood inlay) art...

Posted on July 18, 2011 at 5:04pm 7 Comments

I thought I'd share with everyone something that nobody but the artist gets to see when creating marquetry (wood inlay) artwork... the way the picture magically changes when you apply the first coat of finish.

The video is included below...

Background info: My work is made of hand cut pieces of different exotic woods from around the world fit together to form a picture. There is no stain or dye used... I use only the natural wood colors and grain patterns. The true art of…

Elk Rapids, Michigan.... and a TIP JAR !

Posted on June 27, 2011 at 8:25am 10 Comments

Just did ART RAPIDS!  show in Elk Rapids, Michigan. This show is a roll of the dice. This is a small town show, but the people who attend have disposible income to spend on art. It's just that some years they will spend it, and others they don't.

Load in and out is a breeze... they even have volunteer teenagers with golf carts to lift and transport your heavy equipment to your site and back to your trailer at the end of the show. The people directing traffic know what they are doing.…

Chicago Tribune Magnificent Mile Art Fair 2009...

Posted on July 12, 2009 at 11:28pm 6 Comments

The setting is downtown Chicago, amongst all the skyscrapers - a couple of blocks from navy pier. The show is set up on a granite paved park-like area in front of the Chicago Tribune Tower. Most booths had a small amount of space behind to store stock, a few were cramped. I was very lucky for a first time exhibitor with Howard Alan... I had 4 ft behind my booth, and my space was right at an intersection between two main traffic flows. I got a lot of attention.

The weather was… Continue

Elk Rapids, Mi show review... June 27 09

Posted on June 28, 2009 at 9:22pm 3 Comments

I participated in the Art Rapids Art Fair in Elk Rapids, Michigan on June 27th 2009. It is a one day event an is relatively small with 70 artists.

It is held in a beautiful part on the Lake Michigan shoreline just a stones throw from Traverse City. The area is quite affluent and the people are very friendly. It is a very small scenic town that has a very laid back and relaxed atmosphere.

The people running the show were very organized and helpful. They even had helpers that would… Continue

I forgot to mention yesterday about the phones. Everybody has their preferences, I like the I Phone because of the large tabs and numbers. I just can't deal with those tiny letters and numbers on some o the other phones. I'm a big enough clutz as it is! Dann

Thanks for the info on pci fees. That really wouldn't be an issue anyway because the beauty of this device is that it will detect an invalid card immediately and will not complete the transaction. So you're not running the risk of accepting a bad card.Dann

Hi Charles, I have to plead ignorance with your question. I've never heard of a pci fee. What exactly is it.? But, I can tell you this, with GoPayment you don't have to worry about any hidden fees whatsoever. Starting this month, you can choose between the no monthly fee plan with a 1% higher rate or the $12.95 a month plan with the 1.7-3.7% rate. And that's it! No set up fee, no cancellation fee AND no contract. Tell me what type of smart phone you have and I will send you one of the new free card readers. If you go with the $12.95 a month plan you get 2 months free anyway. So you can 'test drive' it and not have any money invested except for the % rate and .30 transaction fee .I recommend the 12.95 plan if your avg. credit sales are over $1500.00 a month. You'll save money that way.

I remember us talking about the Traverse City Michigan Schooner Fest the weekend of 9/11, but can't remember if you had something going on. Promotor's name is Allison Beers - email is allison@eventsnorth.com
If interested, mention that I thought your work would be an asset there.
I'm staying at the campgrounds there - they may still have some openings.
Have a terrific summer!
