"It sounds like you are interested in a 'destination' store? With this type of storefront, customers will be coming just to see you and not just casually stopping by to browse...i.e. foot traffic as described by Jim and Wendy. So having…"

Jim Parker replied to Carol Knox's discussion Drive-By Versus Walk-By for Success of a Gallery
"Opening a gallery isn't quite like being in an art show. Art shows rely mainly on passing traffic: people who chose the show as a destination, people who happen by, people who are out for entertainment. A gallery is a retail destination, so…"

"Once you establish yourself, I don't think it will matter but if it's on a busy street there should be plenty of cars driving by that would take note and make a return visit, don't you think?  Traffic is traffic, either way and…"

Judy Christian replied to Carol Knox's discussion Drive-By Versus Walk-By for Success of a Gallery
"What type of work do you plan to sell? If it is impulsive then walk by would be helpful. But if you are selling larger more expensive, then I think it would be more like a furniture store clientele, as in serious purchase, in that driving would not…"

Drive-By Versus Walk-By for Success of a Gallery

I am seriously considering opening a gallery. Okay, I've actually decided to but the question of location is still a big one. I have fallen in love with a charming spot that is just the right size and layout. The problem is there would be no walk-by traffic. It is on a busy road and there is already a large sign in front that should be quite visible to the cars driving by.The galleries I have participated in do not seem to depend on walk-by traffic but the question is really bugging my husband…See More

"Thank you to my Secret Santa (Magggie) for this beautiful necklace.  It is a polished stone (agate, I think) wrapped in silver on a silver chain. I will wear it with pride.   Thank you, too, to Connie for organizing this fun event.…"

Has anyone done this show?  It was recommended (strongly) to me by another artist who also owns a gallery.  I was accepted just 48 hours after mailing in my application which made me a little nervous - especially since it is the same week-end as a show that I trust but for which the jury has not yet met.

Mock Jury - St. Louis 2014

Saturday I attended the Mock Jury held by the St. Louis Art Fair organization.  Two things I have to say up front:  (1) I’m not a beginner and; (2) I’m blown away by the effort expended by this organization solely for the benefit of the local artists.  Many thanks to Cultural Festivals!

So, if I’m not new to the artist community, why did I go?  Because I sell well at the shows I make it in to, but can’t seem to get into the ones I want.

Some good friends of mine have told me this show has huge crowds but they are not artists so their perspective may be different than mine.  I'd love to know if anyone has done this show and if it lives up to it's promos.
